1976126331New York: Random House 1976. First edition of this classic novel. Octavo original cloth. Association copy inscribed by the author on the "Valerie love Gore." The recipient Valerie Gore was the author’s sister. Vidal’s father remarried in 1939 and had two children with his second wife; Valerie was born in 1946. The two remained close throughout the years. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Gore Vidal's Narratives of Empire series spans the history of the United States from the Revolution to the post-World War II years. With their broad canvas and large cast of fictional and historical characters the novels in this series present a panorama of the American political and imperial experience as interpreted by one of its most worldly knowing and ironic observers. The centennial of the United States was celebrated with great fanfare--fireworks exhibitions pious calls to patriotism and perhaps the most underhanded political machination in the country's history: the theft of the presidency from Samuel Tilden in favor of Rutherford B. Hayes. This was the Gilded Age when robber barons held the purse strings of the nation and the party in power was determined to stay in power. Gore Vidal's 1876 gives us the news of the day through the eyes of Charlie Schuyler who has returned from exile to regain a lost fortune and arrange a marriage into New York society for his widowed daughter. And although Tammany Hall has faltered and Boss Tweed has fled the effects of corruption reach deep even into Schuyler's own family. "Vidal writes so well that you find yourself holding your breath over something that is a foregone conclusion. . . . Vidal's talent makes the bloated characters of Washington live in a way history books don't" The Boston Globe. Random House hardcover

19492222322244925The First UK printing published by John Lehmann London in 1949. The BOOK is in Very Good condition with some ghosting to the spine. The gilt decoration and titling to the spine has dulled slightly more-so the publisher's logo at the foot of the spine. Some toning to the text-block and outer page edges due to the quality of paper stock used. Free from inscriptions. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition with some fading of colouring to the lower spine portion. Mild edge-wear with a little loss at the upper spine and a few nicks. Mild rubbing and creasing in places to the edges. The B.Biro wrapper artwork looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed without dedication by the author to the title page. A very scarce early title from the acclaimed author. 'In 1948 Mr. Vidal published 'The City and the Pillar' which was dedicated to J. T. Jimmie Trimble. It is what would now be called a coming-out story about a handsome athletic young Virginia man who gradually discovers that he is homosexual. By today s standards it is tame and discreet but at the time it caused a scandal and was denounced as corrupt and pornographic. Mr. Vidal later claimed that the literary and critical establishment The New York Times especially had blacklisted him because of the book and he may have been right. He had such trouble getting subsequent novels reviewed that he turned to writing mysteries under the pseudonym Edgar Box and then for a time gave up novel-writing altogether. To make a living he concentrated on writing for television then for the stage and the movies NY Times August 12th 2012. Collectible. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. 1981WALTER-FILM004146<i>Vintage original second revision script by Gore Vidal adapted from the novel by Lucian Truscott USA. Los Angeles: Richard Roth Productions 6 March 1981. 11261 quarto brad bound in production wrappers. Paper filing label across spine NEAR FINE.</i><br /><br />Second revision draft script of this early form of an adaptation by Gore Vidal to television of Lucian Truscott's novel. In its present state the script would translate into a two-hour television film.<br /><br />Truscott's novel set at West Point at the time of the Vietnam War reportedly based it on fact. The completed film when screened on television dealt with homophobia both external and internalized and it was very strong stuff in the mid-1980s at the height of the Reagan era. The film was clearly troubling to some contemporary critics but it nonetheless was nominated for three Emmy Awards.<br /><br />A very interesting example of Vidal's work as a screenwriter especially because of the film's LGBTQ subject matter.
