Già da anni i biologi molecolari stanno indagando i segreti dell'informazione genetica, contenuta nella parte più riposta della cellula, il nucleo. I meccanismi della trasmissione ereditaria hanno ricevuto via via maggior luce, e gli scienziati sono riusciti, lavorando su batteri e su virus, a modificare le informazioni contenute nel modello cromosomico e a determinare, per cosi dire, mutazioni artificiali. L'uomo è stato addirittura in grado di smontare organismi semplici e di rimontarne altri, formati da parti di diversi individui e ciò nonostante viventi (si sarebbe tentati di dire funzionanti). Si è scoperto che anche le cellule somatiche, pur essendosi specializzate nello svolgimento di determinati compiti, contengono l'informazione genetica sufficiente a costruire un individuo tutto intero. C'è chi è stato capace di fecondare un uovo di rana con una cellula somatica, ottenendo una rana perfetta. Ma la ricerca è andata ancora oltre: si è riusciti a togliere a un ovulo il suo nucleo e a introdurvi quello di una cellula somatica in fase di avanzata divisione, impiantando poi l'embrione in un utero. Questa operazione è stata eseguita sull'uomo? E ciò che afferma David Rorvik in questo volume, con l'abilità consumata del reporter. Nel laboratorio del dottor Darwin è nato il clone, l'uomo nuovo creato, per così dire, per riproduzione asessuata, l'uomo che non è figlio più che fratello gemello (identico, salva la differenza di età) di suo padre e che non ha alcun rapporto di affinità con la madre, la quale è stata per lui solo un ambiente e un mezzo di coltura. Nota dell'editore americano Nel 1977 David Rorvik venne negli uffici della divisione commerciale della J.B. Lippincott a New York e ci parlò dei fatti straordinari che sono raccontati in questo libro. Spiegò però che si era impegnato a non rivelare a nessuno l'identità delle altre persone che avevano avuto parte nella vicenda. Questa circostanza ci toglieva la possibilità di una verifica e ci impediva quindi di avallare il suo racconto dinanzi al pubblico. Discutemmo allora se accettare o no il libro di cui ci offriva il progetto a queste condizioni. Rorvik è un autore esperto nel campo della biologia umana e ha ricevuto premi e riconoscimenti per i suoi scritti nel campo dell'informazione scientifica. Il libro che ci proponeva di fare avrebbe suscitato inevitabilmente grandi controversie, ma avrebbe affrontato problemi scientifici, sociali, morali e religiosi di grande portata. questi problemi in un modo rivelatore e responsabile, e decidemmo di accettare la sua proposta. Eravamo convinti che Rorvik avrebbe trattato Il racconto che segue è sorprendente. L'autore ci assicura che è vero. Noi non sappiamo se sia cosi. Siamo però pienamente convinti che il libro da lui scritto stimolerà l'interesse e la discussione su problemi che hanno un'importanza estrema per il nostro immediato futuro.
