TYPED POSTCARD SIGNED by the American Science Fiction and Fantasy author EMIL PETAJA to his friend and colleague REGINALD BRETNOR.

1966100730San Francisco California February 5 1966. 1966. Very good. - Over 90 words typed on a 3-1/4 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide postcard. Emil Pataja thanks Reginald Bretnor "for 'through t and s with FF'. It's a ball and isn't there some way of twisting GB's wrist and getting more more more FASF just isn't the same without him." He goes on to mention having to bodily boot out an "old alcoholic-type friend from L.A." who was crashing in his "practically one room" home. He goes on to say that "I'm getting some work done. Hoping for nice things from my next paperback with is mostly fantasy." Signed "Emil" with a couple of corrections penned in his hand. Addressed and postmarked on the verso. There are lines apparently from the postmark stamped at the top across some of the text of the first paragraph though all of the words are legible. Very good.The American science fiction and fantasy author Emil Theodore Petaja 1915-2000 had a career which spanned seven decades. Petaja published 13 novels nearly 150 short stories as well as poems and books and articles on other subjects. An author of science fiction fantasy horror stories detective fiction and poetry he considered his work as part of the older tradition of "weird fiction". The Science Fiction Writers of America named him the first ever Author Emeritus in 1995.Born Alfred Reginald Kahn the Russian-American science fiction writer Reginald Bretnor 1911-1992 wrote numerous short stories many of which featured a whimsical story line or ironic plot twist as well as volumes on military theory and public affairs. His collection of short stories titled "Through Time and Space with Ferdinand Feghoot" published under the pseudonym of Grendel Briarton gave birth to the humorous story pun which came to be called a "Feghoot". The stories were originally published in Fantasy and Science Fiction for 1956 through 1973 and in 1973 the magazine ran a contest soliciting "Feghoots" from its readers and writers. TYPED LETTER SIGNED by the American stage and screen actor FRITZ LEIBER to the American impressario and lecture manager James B. Pond regarding performances of Shakespeare plays.

Very good. - Over 250 words typed on 10-7/8 inch high by 8-3/8 inch wide "The Washington" hotel stationery with the hotel's crest at top right and a woodcut vignette at top left. The Shakespearean actor writes to James B. Pond "Bim" mentioning that he's heard from Raphael that Pond "had had letters from Ankermiller relative to a proposition about me". Leiber had refrained from getting in touch following the Maeterlinck lecture fiasco as he didn't know if Pond was yet able to give it his "consideration". He goes on to list the success that his recent performances of Shakespeare plays have had quoting figures and goes on to make suggestions regarding a possible tour. "We could use the modified curtain arrangement affected by Southern and Marlowe." and suggests that they would need a minimum of costume and scenery for 4 plays "say Hamlet-Othello which WE have not done lately at all Merchant and Caesar." Signed in full "Fritz Leiber". Folded for mailing with tiny chips to the top & bottom right corners. Very good.The American stage & film actor Fritz Leiber 1882-1949 was the father of the science fiction and fantasy author Fritz Leiber Jr. Leiber had a successful career as a Shakespearean actor on stage and on film. He and his wife toured in a Shakespearean acting company which by the 1930's was known as "Fritz Leiber & Co." He made his film debut as Mercutio in "Romeo and Juliet" in 1916 and went on to perform in major roles in the silent era and played character actors in subsequent sound films. Leiber had a peculiar hobby. Each time he performed a new role he had his portrait painted in costume. Of course his son Fritz Leiber Jr. inherited these hundreds of portraits sharing his cramped quarters with likenesses of his father's face. Making the best of it Leiber Jr. later used this as inspiration for his story "237 Talking Statues."James B. Pond the American impresario and lecture agent who headed the J.B. Pond Lyceum Bureau brought the great Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck to America for a series of lectures. The first lecture took place at Carnegie hall on January 2nd 1920. Unfortunately Maeterlinck failed to carry out his intention to lecture in English because of his labored "phonetic" English. He declared his intention to continue his lectures in French and have the translation read by another person. As a result the lecture tour was a failure and lawsuits ensued on both sides.
