1969biblio116<p>This is a near fine copy with only a bookplate inside the front cover and very light soil and wear to the exterior or iinterior. The Soviet Cultural Ministry back in 1939 apparently decided to produce their own Wizard Of Oz and designated "Volkov" to devise it. Binding and hinges are solid and the text is clean and unmarked. It appears to be an early reprint as Harcourt has used a C.3.67 on the copyright page. Price clipped jacket has seen more wear than the book with short tears at the spine ends and folds and scuffing at the spine panel that obscures most of the author's name. 256 pp. black and white illustrations by Gobbato. Lindsay created some of the most original and memorable science fiction and fantasy of the early 20th Century - famously A Voyage to Arcturus but also The Haunted Woman and several others C.S. Lewis notably an enthusiast of the mythopoeic creation of the former. And finally long after he died these two stories saw publication. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. Paul Leyssac was a well-known stage actor who appeared opposite Ethel Barrymore and Marie Tempest and whose recitals of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf were widely popular. Danish-born and French-accented he was also an accomplished translator of Danish fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen. He also appeared in 7 films of the late 1930's and early 40's.
