Castes in India: Their Mechanism, Genesis and Development was a paper read by B. R. Ambedkar at an anthropological seminar of Alexander Goldenweiser in New York on 9 May 1916. It was later published in volume XLI of Indian Antiquary in May 1917. In 1979, the Education Department of the Government of Maharashtra (Bombay) published this article in the collection of Ambedkar's writings and speeches Volume 1; later, it was translated into many languages. In the paper, Ambedkar made a presentation on a social phenomenon that emerged from the strategy of the Brahmins who adopted a strictly endogamous matrimonial regime, leading the other groups to do the same in order to emulate this self-proclaimed elite. He said that "the superposition of endogamy on exogamy means the creation of caste". Ambedkar has evaluated that the endogamy (absence of intermarriage) is the only one that can be called the essence of caste and only characteristic that is peculiar to caste. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits), while also supporting the rights of women and labour. He was independent India's first law and justice minister, the principal architect of the Constitution of India, and a founding father of the Republic of India. Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in the town and military cantonment of Mhow (now Dr. Ambedkar Nagar) in the Central Provinces (now in Madhya Pradesh). Ambedkar was a prolific student earning doctorates in economics from both Columbia University and the London School of Economics and gained a reputation as a scholar for his research in law, economics, and political science. In 1990, the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, was posthumously conferred upon Ambedkar. Ambedkar's legacy includes numerous memorials and depictions in popular culture. How We Think is a book written by the American educational philosopher John Dewey, published in 1910. In this book, Dewey shares his views on the educator’s role in training students to think well. Basing his assertions on the belief that knowledge is strictly relative to human interaction with the world, he considers the need for thought training. Dewey argues that thinking is a natural automated act, just like breathing and heartbeat are, and therefore it is impossible to teach someone to think. However, it is possible to help develop someone’s thinking, by helping develop a creative, curious and questioning mind. To do so, we can create encouraging environment, within which the already-creative-mind will be stimulated into further creative thinking. This volume, as fresh and inspirational today as it was upon its initial publication a century ago, is essential for anyone active in the field of teaching or about to embark on a career in education. John Dewey was born on October 20, 1859, in Burlington, Vermont. He was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer whose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. He is one of the primary figures associated with the philosophy of pragmatism and is considered one of the fathers of functional psychology. A well-known public intellectual, Dewey was also a major voice of progressive education and liberalism. He believed that education should be based on the principle of learning through doing. He published over 1,000 pieces of writings during his lifetime.Although, Dewey is known best for his publications about education, he also wrote about many other topics, including epistemology, metaphysics, aesthetics, art, logic, social theory, and ethics. One of America’s foremost philosophers, John Dewey fought for civil and academic freedom, founded the Progressive School movement, and steadfastly promoted a scientific approach to intellectual development. His influence on American education and philosophy is incalculable. ABOUT THE BOOK The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. Although The Prince was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative. Its salient features are: • It is notable for being in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time, particularly those concerning politics and ethics. • Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. • It contains a list of principles used to acquire and maintain political power. Machiavelli has created a ruthless guide on how to rule the country in this volume. The book is dedicated to Lorenzo De Medici, the ruler of Florence. The author explains in simple language about the nature of great men and the characters of the government. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Italian diplomat Niccolò Machiavelli is best known for writing The Prince, a handbook for unscrupulous politicians that established its author as the "father of modern political theory." He was born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy. The young Niccolò Machiavelli became a diplomat after the temporary fall of Florence's ruling Medici family in 1494. He served in that position for 14 years in Italy's Florentine Republic during the Medici family's exile, during which time he earned a reputation for deviousness. From the 13th century onward, Machiavelli’s family was wealthy and prominent, holding on occasion Florence’s most important offices. His father, Bernardo, a doctor of laws, was nevertheless among the family’s poorest members. After his involvement in an unsuccessful attempt to organize a Florentine militia against the return of the Medici family to power in 1512 became known, Machiavelli was tortured, jailed and banished from an active role in political life. The recent advances in the field of biotechnology have brought into focus several ethical and safety issues. The inventions in the field of genetic engineering and related fields of molecular biology will affect not only ourselves but the plants, microorganisms, animals and the entire environment and the way we practice agriculture, medicine and food processing. An increase in our ability to change life forms in recent years has given rise to the new science of ‘bioethics’. While anti-biotechnology activists are over rating the risks of biotechnology, it is time for the scientists to make a scientific and objective analysis of the social issues involved, and make it known to the public who will, otherwise, be carried away by the emotional rhetoric by the less informed but highly vocal section of the society. The present book discusses the biosafety and bioethical issues the modern society confronts. Topics such as biotech development, impact of biotechnology on biosafety, biotech products and ethical issues, governance of biosafety, environmentally responsible use of biotechnology, etc., are describe in detail. This book is destined to become an essential reading for students, teachers and professionals in all fields of life sciences. A microbe or microorganism is an organism that is microscopic. Microbes are often illustrated using single-celled, or unicellular organisms; however some unicellular protists are visible to the naked eye, and some multicellular species are microscopic. The study of microbes is called microbiology. Microbes have an important place in all ecosystems and in most higher-order multicellular organisms. For mankind they are important because they participated in the earth’s element cycles, and because of their use in the creation of certain types of food, medicines and biological weapons. An in-depth understanding about the structure, functions and applications these tiny organisms is essentials for all who related to modern life sciences. The present book provides overall information about microbes in a simple style. Besides students and teachers of life sciences, microbiologists, researchers and budding scientists will also find this book of utmost use.
