ABOUT THE BOOK:- The book discusses the utility of urban agriculture (UA) to solve various urban problems in India. Good practice urban agriculture is growing vegetables, fruits, fish and livestock in a regulated manner on any available urban land. In India shortages of per capita land availability and fresh water supply are realities. In urban agriculture, both sewage water and organic waste can be gainfully utilized in producing fish and vegetable, thus transforming urban waste into resource. UA can reduce urban hunger, pollution and food price. Well planned, UA can help in reducing food mile (distance from farm to plate) and carbon foot print thus saving fuel. Population growth and rapid urbanization are encroaching on agricultural land resulting in displaced agricultural labourers migrating to cities and settling in urban sprawls devoid of water, sanitation and basic amenities. This creates stress on city infrastructure and adversely impacts health, hygiene and urban food availability. The migrants, skilled in the indigenous techniques of farming can be gainfully utilized in regulated UA, which not only compensate for the urban food shortage and benefit the migrants with a livelihood but also provide the congested city with lungs. The book, highlights experiences from India and the world. About the book:- The sugar industry is the second largest industry and next to textile industry. It plays an important role in the India economic life of India. It is such an industry which makes an impact on agriculture directly. The sugar industry has great significatory value which cannot be devalued in its relationship with agricultural and industrial economy of the rural region of India. The Indian sugar industry is a key factor of rural development, supporting over about 55 million sugarcane farmers and their dependents and a large mass of agricultural labourers involved in sugarcane cultivation, harvesting, machine manufacturing etc. Further, the Uttar Pradesh is the foremost state in production of sugar and sugarcane in the country. It contributes almost fifty per cent of the total production of the country. But now-adays, Indian sugar industry is suffering from some basic problems i.e., archaic plant and machinery, poor physical condition and sickness etc. Hence, the term Quality of Work Life (QWL) has been increasingly used to describe certain environmental and humanistic values neglected by the industrial societies in favour of technological advancement, industrial productivity and economic growth. Therefore, this book is an attempt to highlight the dimensions and status of QWL in Uttar Pradesh Sugar Industry. It is widely covers the four important aspects of QWL i.e., working environment aspect, relational aspect, job aspect and financial aspect. In this context, this book will certainly prove to be useful to policy- makers, mill owners, employees, practitioners of human resource and students for understanding the conceptual knowledge of quality of work life and further research scope in this area.
