Over the years, and specifically since the enactment of land ceiling laws in a number of States in the country in the 1950s, agricultural land has changed hands in a manner that needs a searching enquiry not only for academic purpose but the planners and rural development agencies as well. Land transfer is of utmost significance as it offers vital clues to the emerging agrarian structure. Land alienation is nor only uprooting hundreds of thousands of small farmers but also adding to the population explosion in the urban areas which are already tottering under the weight of too much population. What are the factors behind land alienation? Which classes are losing land and which classes are gaining it? Why is landlessness on the increase? Is it due to immiserisation or has the diversification of the economic abetted the process. All these and other questions have been analysed in this empiricial study in the context of dynamics of new agricultural technology in a backward state like U.P. with its marked regional diversities. About The Author:- Dr. Kripa Shankar, obtained his D.Phil, degree from University of Allahabad and has been an activist in the Kisan movement. He continued with his academic pursuits, doing empirical studies on rural poverty, development and growth process. He has been contributing articles to various journals and presenting papers to seminars and conferences. Currently he is in the faculty of Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute, Allahabad. ABOUT THE BOOK:- The book–'Historical Development of Agriculture and Food in Bengal' is first attempt of its kind in India. Despite the time and again change of geographical area Bengal remained united in its diversity and rich with its mixed people and culture. As a result this fertile land was strong to overcome the disastrous events. With a large population it continued to be food-deficit even in eighties of last century when also farming was 'bargdars' (share-croppers) receiving right to 'barga-land' farming in Bengal became 'small' and 'marginal' farming. Applying their experience, skill and innovativeness they increased food production and the state achieved self-sufficiency in food by nineties of last century. Subsequently, farmers started switching over slowly to shor t -dur a t ion c a sh- c rops l ike vegetables, flowers etc. to enhance income. The book presents twelve periods of time from 'early weapon-making and ' searching natural foods' passed through nine other historical periods to reach 'modern agriculture' and 'ready-to-eat food' era of this century. The dramatic course of events traced in this land although different could show there the path to trace their course of events. All together would form the valuable 'roots' of anchorage for the country to progress and develop. Hence this book, it is hoped, would be useful for people interested in understanding course of events for progress of food and agriculture in their state as also the country with passing of time. In spite of all the efforts, the population of India is increasing day by day. Many of the cultivable lands have been turned in erecting buildings, highways. This resulted in shortage of food grains against increasing number of consumers, the area of lands being the same, rather lesser that before. Also there is a limit of increasing production and productivity of food material by using manures and fertilizers. If we take up this problem by supplementing or supplanting with fruits and vegetables, there is no reason why one must feel hungry. Further we are passing our days in the era of environmental pollution even in Delhi, Allahabad, Maharashtra and other states. Use of polythene, throwing garbage here and there, burning thse along road sides, smoking, drinking, chewing tobacco, gutka, dusty roads and foot paths, smoke and poisonous gases emitted by factories, tempos and buses make the environment polluted. Water pollution, Noise pollution, ripening of fruits by use of calcium carbide-all these are health hazards. Efforts have been made to deal all these in the book “Horticulture and Environment”.
