Reliure de l'époque demi-maroquin vert sombre à grain long, petits coins de maroquin, plats de papier décoré à l'imitation du cuir de Russie, filets dorés au dos et en encadrement des plats, tranches citron (reliure caractéristique de la bibliothèque du Prince Dietrichstein). Exemplaire à l'état proche du neuf, rares marques. Intérieur très frais. Rousseurs acceptables aux premiers et derniers feuillets, à quelques autres feuillets. Chaque volume porte au verso de la garde la signature autographe du Prince Dietrichstein. Édition originale. Ouvrage classique basé sur les documents officiels. De la propriété territoriale aux produits de l'agriculture, à l’accroissement des produits de l'agriculture, comparé à l'accroissement de la population. La dernière partie est consacrée à l'agriculture en Europe. Les remarques de Maurice Rubichon (1766-1849) qui terminent chaque chapitre sont très pertinentes et du plus grand intérêt. Provenance : Signature ex libris du Prince Dietrichstein. L'exemplaire provient de la belle bibliothèque (aujourd'hui démantelée) du Prince Moritz von Dietrichstein (19 février 1775 Vienne - Décès 27 août 1864 (à 89 ans), bibliothécaire et militaire. Fils du prince Karl Johann von Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie (1728-1808) et de Maria Christina Gräfin von Thun und Hohenstein (1738–1788), il est le frère de Franz Joseph von Dietrichstein. Il rejoint en 1791 l'armée autrichien, devient aide de camp du général Mack en 1798 à Naples, où il se heurta la capture de son chef par les Français, partagea sa captivité à Paris et l'accompagna dans sa fuite. Il reprit les mêmes fonctions au près du même général à Ulm en 1805. En 1815, il est nommé gouverneur et précepteur du duc de Reichstadt, petit-fils de l'empereur François Ier d'Autriche, fonction qu'il conserva jusqu'à la décès du prince en 1831. Il prit par la suite la direction des théâtres et de la musique de la Cour impériale autrichienne et fut nommé préfet de la Bibliothèque impériale. En 1838, il a acquis pour la Bibliothèque la partition du Requiem de Mozart. En tant que directeur du Cabinet des médailles et antiquités de 1833 à 1848, il a acquis un grand mérite. En 1834, il a été nommé membre honoraire de l'Académie bavaroise des sciences. En 1836, il est fait chevalier de l'ordre de la Toison d'or par l'empereur Ferdinand Ier d'Autriche. Il est nommé chambellan en 1845. Comme son frère, le prince Franz Joseph, il était opposé au système Metternich. (notice Wikipédia). Très bel exemplaire.

Translated and edited by John Mills. <br/> Contemporary sprinkled calf raised bands rebacked with brown morocco original tan morocco title label restorations to corners. With a folding diagram for barley planting and six copper engravings of farm equipment ploughs seed drills etc. four of them folding. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Sir George Shuckburgh Bart. and ex-libris of Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt. Fussell II 48-49; Hunt 564 this copy. ◆Extremities a bit rubbed corners bumped but A FINE COPY INTERNALLY quite clean fresh and wide margined in a solid serviceable binding.<br/> <br/> This is the Hunt copy of an influential work by the French polymath whom Raphael calls "one of the outstanding botanists of the 18th century" in the fields of plant physiology and agriculture. A physician naval engineer and botanist Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau 1700-82 gave up on formal university training to take lodgings near the Botanical Gardens where he pursued his own plan of learning from the director and from other distinguished persons who gathered there. After inheriting his father's estate he set up a model farm on the property to test various theories and methods of agriculture. According to Fussell Duhamel was a proponent of Jethro Tull's "drill husbandry" method of cultivating seeds planted in rows by machine the technique that formed the basis of modern agricultural practice. "He carried out extensive and probably costly experiments and demonstrated the financial advantages and increased physical volume of yield the system provided. This book no doubt played a large part in stimulating interest in the drill husbandry." Hunt notes that the present work was "apparently collected from several publications by Duhamel . . . with the addition of observations and experiments by other French and English writers" by translator and editor John Mills ca. 1717 - ca. 1794. The present item was once owned by one of the greatest botanical book collectors of modern times Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt 1882-1963. According to the Hunt Institute website "at the age of 15 Rachel received her first rare book Leonard Meager's 'The English Gardener' 1670 from a family member. Given her interest in plants gardens books and history this book planted the seed! for a lifelong appreciation of reading and collecting books about botany gardens and other plant-related topics." In addition to assembling an outstanding book collection Hunt was a respected bookbinder who studied with Cobden-Sanderson's pupil Euphemia Bakewell and operated the Lehcar Rachel spelled backwards Bindery out of her family home. She was a founding member of the Hroswitha Club for women bibliophiles which has since merged with the formerly all-male Grolier Club. Another previous owner Sir George Shuckburgh sixth baronet 1751-1804 was a prominent mathematician who was awarded the Royal Society's Copley Medal for his work to establish the standard length of a yard. Colony farm. A remarkable souvenir photo album depicting the Progressive Era movement towards treating mental health patients through occupational therapy working the large newly opened Colony Farm on 1000 acres next to the Essondale Provincial Hospital for the Insane later Riverview Hospital.

Printed mounted title in gilt & black on black with 49 silver gelatin photographs sized 4 x 6 in. mounted each leaf w/ printed text below in gilt on gray slips. Contemporary flexible textured calf Heinn Co. binding minor rubbing shelfwear still an excellent exemplar. This exceptional souvenir photo album visually documents the efforts of the British Columbia government to relieve the overcrowding at the Provincial Hospital for the Insane in New Westminster in the first decade of the 20th Century. In 1904 after appropriating 1000 acres of the traditional lands of the Kwiketlem First Nation peoples Dr. Charles Doherty focused on clearing over 180 hecatres of the flood plain constructing dikes building state-of-the-art farm buildings to provide purpose therapeutic occupational training and food for the new hospital which would later become Riverview. The Progressive Era movement to reform treatment of the mentally ill was to not only free them from deplorable asylum conditions which reformers such as Julia Lathrop Adolf Meyer and Eleanor Clark Slagle believed only increased otherwise curable mental illnesses but also provide training to gain employment upon discharge from the hospital. Doherty insisted on paying the patients a small salary to work and live at the farm and the Holstein herd which began with 22 cows in 1910 grew swiftly after importing 50 more from New York and Carnation Farms of Seattle so that that by the end of 1912 the farm was producing nearly 50000 gallons of milk with prize cows capturing top prizes at local farm exhibitions. The photographs open with shot of the gate to Colony Farm cottages and dining halls for patients barns and milking stations stables hay barn water tower silos corrals pumping station and dairy facilities. In addition there are several photos showing land clearing burgeoning silage corn fields nurseries horse-drawn seeding cutting hay oats and steam threshing.The final photo shows the initial reinforced concrete Essondale Hospital with red brick facades in the final stages of construction and would open later in 1913. One of the photos includes an office calendar dated November 1912 while two others show the visit of Prince Arthur Duke of Connaught 1850-1942 the first Governor General of Canada to be a member of the British Royal Family and his wife Princess Louise to the successful Colony Farm Sept. 11 1912. The Colony farm was expanded in 1918 by another 700 acres and would continue to thrive through World War II. Unfortunately in 1946 a series of arson fires destroyed most of the documents of the dairy operation and Colony Farm and eventually due to budgetary pressures the farm closed in 1983. The halcyon intentions of Manchester and Doherty would later be undone during the 20th Century as budgetary restraints prevented expansion or proper treatments so that by 1956 the Essondale Hospital was housing 4306 patients and 2200 staff members in buildings designed for 1800 patients. In addition medical practices of the time ranged from electroshock therapy and forced sterilization and would eventually be closed in 1992 as the de-institutionalization movement gained favor. Moore 1887-1963 launched his photographic career with Byron Harmon in Banff Alberta and by 1912 was established in Vancouver specializing in panoramic photographs after 1913 and later forming a partnership with Wilfred F. McConnell buying the Canadian Photo Co. He retired from the firm in 1953.
