170532355à Amsterdam: Chez Estienne Rogier 1705. Fine. Chez Estienne Rogier à Amsterdam 1705 8 x 15 cm relié Second edition rare after the first edition published in 1698 by Barbin. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Head worn. Rubbing. Foxing. The work belongs to no defined genre; in a very free manner a Siamese tells anecdotes which he mixes with maxims on various subjects: The palace the court the public the Bois de Boulogne the opera. These satirical considerations of Parisian society pell-mell do not possess a continuous narrative; the work would pave the way for Montesquieu's Persian Letters. It is one of its principal sources. As Oxford Companion indicates the text here comprises Bacon's "collections of reflections and generalizations and extracts from previous authors woven together . . . into counsels for the successful conduct of life and the management of men." Some of the essays "deal with questions of state policy . . . some with personal conduct . . . some on abstract subjects such as 'Truth' 'Death' and 'Unity' . . . and some reveal Bacon's delight in Nature such as the pleasant essay 'Of Gardens.'" Day says that "in Bacon's hand the essay is an impersonal gem of worldly wisdom" and most of the essays reflect an intention to provide "cold-blooded instruction on how to get ahead in life." In short incisive prose modeled after Tacitus "the aphoristic skill and wise experience of Bacon unite to form some of the most memorable and penetrating phrases in English." DNB indicates that this is an important edition pointing out "the accuracy of Wright's text and the concise learning of its notes." In very fine condition our volume gives special pleasure from the handsomely decorated Riviere binding to the high quality laid paper to the carefully printed text within enormous margins.

Riviere is one of the foremost names in English binding partly because the firm did consistently fine work and partly because it was so long in business. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829 then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881 he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son and the bindery continued to do business until 1939. 157119997Antverpiae: Christophori Plantini. Good. 1571. First Edition. Hardcover. This is a nice clear example of early printing from the famous Plantinian press. Chriophori Plantini 1520 - 1589 was a well-known French printer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam. He is perhaps the most famous printer of this era. The buildings housing the famous press are still in existence and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This book contains three separate works in one volume with separate title pages for each part. Plantini's distinctive printer's mark is on each title page. Pagination for the three parts-- I: 353 7 pp. II: 80 4 pp. III: 29 3 pp. The binding is full leather with gilt decoration on the front and rear and each cover has a gilt rule along the edges. The covers are both detached and the 4 cords have broken. The leather hubbed spine is missing a portion at the top and chipped at the bottom. This appearst to be a later binding for the book. The pages are generally clear and clean though there is a small worm hole at the top corner of the first 40 pages There is a triangular booklate on the front paste down with the printed name: "Roy A. Tower;" the rear end paper also has a bookplate showing a rat eating a book. There are also couple of old names in ink in an old hand on the front end paper. Sold with all faults. This appears to be the earliest edition of this book from Plantin's press in Amsterdam. Please inquire if you would like more information about this early Plantin press publication. Size: Appox. 5" x 3.25" ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall . Christophori Plantini hardcover
