First editions thus of this report prepared for the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration under Contract E45-1-2130 following the significant pressures resulting from investigations into the chemical explosion at the 242-Z Building August 1976 as the Hanford Nuclear Reservation had seriously underestimated the risks of long-term storage of highly radioactive waste in aging underground tanks. Investigations in this report examined and discussed the geologic hydrologic heat transfer and rock-waste evaluating the feasibility of storing nuclear wastes in caverns mined out into the Columbia River basalts. Unfortunately this continues to be an issue with much of the Hanford Reservation now operating as the largest Superfund cleanup site in the country and as late as the 1990’s 20 years after this report contaminated ground water underneath the Hanford reservation was threatening not only the Columbia River but the entire watershed.
