Lamb's sketches drawing in a semi-autobiographical manner from his own experiences and correspondence utilised a conversational and personable dramatic persona allowing for a more naive and whimsical take on contemporary events. An early piece of juvenilia principally by Mary Lamb with contributions by her brother Charles centred upon the newly arrived pupils during their first evening in attendance of Mrs. Leicester's school for girls during which they together relate the circumstances of their upbringings and difficulties had with their immediate families. The stories are at least partially autobiographical reflecting Mary's troubled childhood and history of mental instability. First printed in 1809 the book proved remarkably popular reaching 11 editions by 1836. He was known for his explorative innovative designs breaking with convention being labelled a "Rogue Gothic Revivalist". This work shares Buckton Lamb's views on ancient domestic architecture with some observations on the application of this architecture to the composition of modern edifices. With the illustrations selected from original drawings in the collection of the late Sir William Burrell.Bookplate of Phil Shirley and another of English antiquarian and archivist Francis W. Steer. Loosely inserted is a leaf of 'Designs for Agricultural Labourers Cottages' dated 1873 by John Birch. Bound in the publisher's red cloth rebacked with the original spine laid down.
