They discovered and removed to Germany many artifacts while carelessly destroying others. Le Coq thought he had found evidence of Aryan culture in what they found in China. Some of the material taken back to Germany was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II. Online sources state that China regards Le Coq's actions pn these expeditions as comparable to the looting of the Elgin marbles by the British. This book's original owner Kenneth Scott Latourette 1884-1968 was a scholar and historian who taught for many years at the Yale Divinity School. He is probably most remembered for his much admired volumes surveying world Christianity. Allen & Unwin hardcover
