Translated by Anna Barwell from the German "Auf Hellas Spuren in Osttturkistan." published in Leipzig in 1926. Signature on front free endpaper by former owner "K. S. Latourette". No jacket Le Coq a wealthy German brewer and wine merchant became strongly interested in archeology. He actually led the second and third German Turfan expeditions. They discovered and removed to Germany many artifacts while carelessly destroying others. Le Coq thought he had found evidence of Aryan culture in what they found in China. Some of the material taken back to Germany was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II. Online sources state that China regards Le Coq's actions pn these expeditions as comparable to the looting of the Elgin marbles by the British. This book's original owner Kenneth Scott Latourette 1884-1968 was a scholar and historian who taught for many years at the Yale Divinity School. He is probably most remembered for his much admired volumes surveying world Christianity. Allen & Unwin hardcover
