192919847New York: E.P. Dutton & Co. Inc. Very Good in Fair dj. 1929. 2nd printing. Hardcover. book is lightly worn with a touch of dust-soiling and faint spotting on the top edge of the text block; the jacket alas is badly compromised due to a large chunk having been torn away from the top left corner of the front panel taking with it about half of the title. "Body horror" novel about the psychological havoc wrought upon a famous pianist when his hands mangled in an accident are surgically replaced by those of a recently-executed murderer. Originally published in France in 1920 the novel was first filmed as a 1924 silent in Austria directed by Robert Wiene of "Caligari" fame; subsequent movie versions acknowledging the source novel were MAD LOVE 1935 starring Colin Clive and Peter Lorre and THE HANDS OF ORLAC 1960 with Mel Ferrer and Christopher Lee. It was also unofficially remade without source attribution as HANDS OF A STRANGER 1962 and is often acknowledged as an inspiration for the 1946 thriller THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS. Rare in the dust jacket this example of which apart from the noted large missing piece is virtually unworn and is a great candidate for professional restoration. Alternatively one could take the much less expensive approach of obtaining a beautiful facsimile of the original jacket from the well-known purveyor of such things; details upon request. . E.P. 1915CAT0127New York et al. 1915. Silver gelatin prints roughly 8 x 8 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 inches the last on a larger mount. Very Good. In 1914 Francis Red Fox James now presumed to be related to the Blackfoot tribe rode a horse across the country seeking states' approval for an American Indian national holiday. He delivered endorsements from 24 states to the federal government but a commemoration never materialized. The Washington Herald reported that James rode 4000 miles from a Crow reservation in Montana and was received by President Wilson to discuss the possibility of a "national Indian's Day" in October. Washington Herald 12/16/14

Although his mother was probably Blackfoot James claimed Native American heritage only as an adult. He changed his name by adding "Red" and later "Skiuhushu" to Francis Fox James. Two of the images in this collection contain familiar tropes of American Indian portraiture but the third offers an arresting image of James holding the American flag aloft as a kind of offering. This enigmatic gesture could be read as evidence of an optimistic belief in a mutual relationship between the US and American-Indian nations. It is also undoubtedly related to James' interest in legitimizing his Indian heritage as the founder of the Tepee Order a youth organization addressed mainly to white Protestant children. By 1920 the Order had evolved into an adult secret fraternal organization shrouded in mysticism. James was also associated with the Boy Scouts; he is credited with organizing the first All-Indian Boy Scout Troop in 1915.

In The Search for an American Indian Identity 1970 Hazel Hertzberg writes that James "was deeply troubled by his degree of Indian 'blood.'" In addition to changing his name several times to seem more "Indian" he theorized that his Welsh ancestry was pre-Columbian using the Tepee Order to create a kind of third space a "pan-Indian society" that was neither Indian nor white.

We find no other examples of these photographs though a US flag does appear on James' saddle in a photo documenting his White House visit. One picture signed by James with "Indian in Prayer "Great Spirit. / Red Fox James. Blackfeet." on recto and the following on verso: "A Gift / To my dear Friend / Eugene Beaton / c/o Burns Studio / Bucyrius sic Ohio. From Red Fox James / Blackfoot Tribe." Generally a very good collection with some fading to images but well preserved overall. unknown books
1899005358Oxford England 1899-1904. Half Leather. Very Good. Madcap "salad days" from back when! 4to. 30 by 25.5 cm. Unpaginated 20 pages with caricatures mounted onto card rectos. Additional blank card and a number of drawings that are loose some of which were probably always so. In total 91 separate pieces of overwhelmingly caricature of varying size and ranging from simple portraits exaggerated in one way or another as called for by the medium to multi-character cartoons or depictions of a scene with dialogue bubbles and captions. The caricatures center around but are not confined to the doings and personalities of Merton College Oxford. A few of the portraits would appear to be of Theodore Roosevelt for example. Many but far from all of the mounted caricature illustrations are signed or credited although we think it is quite likely that pseudonyms were used as was obviously the case with "the Freak". The album is quite unusual then in its creation with multiple contributors something common in a friendship or amicorum album which this decidedly is not. We would surmise that the contributors were members of an informal club of artistic anarchists. The quality is not entirely even as might be expected from such an effort but overall the caricatures are vivid and amusing with quite a few displaying true artistic cleverness. Rebacked in matching calf. Wear to the corners and edges. Some scrappiness to interior. Paste marks where there once were a few mounted pieces.

hardcover books

One of forty copies of this rare catalogue in the deluxe presentation binding. Fox Strangways 1847-1905 possessed a vast collection of family portraits and Old Master paintings spread across a house in London at 42 Belgrave Square and three country houses Melbury House and Abbotsbury Castle in Dorset and Redlynch House in Wiltshire. The catalogue was compiled by his mother Amelia Fox Strangways. The 4th Earl William Thomas-Horner Fox Strangways 1795-1865 uncle of the 5th Earl and a prominent diplomat was posted throughout Europe most notably Italy where he was an early proponent of artists from the period of Giotto and Cimabue. Despite his enormous contributions to the family collection the 4th Earl's name is curiously not found in this catalogue. In 1913 a fire destroyed Abbotsbury Castle and its contents making this an essential record of that part of the collection. Many of the paintings purchased by the 4th Earl were bequeathed to Christ Church Oxford and to the Ashmolean Museum. The catalogue lists 352 paintings arranged by house then by room. Many have lengthy descriptions about the artists and provenance. Fine copy lacking the errata slip. unknown books

Pin-holes in most of the letters one letter with a small portion of the margin cut away not affecting legibility a few edges frayed but very good.

Remarkable scientific archive consisting primarily of letters from British botanist Charles Curtis the first superintendent of the famous Penang Botanic Gardens in Malaysia and the one primarily responsible for the Gardens' beautiful design. All of the letters in this archive deal with the identification of tropical plant species including orchids ferns flowering trees and shrubs fruits etc. They document Curtis's encyclopedic knowledge of both local and exotic species as well as his collecting activities and his collegial relationship with Kew Gardens in London. The recipient of the letters was James Kortright Birch a colonial governor of Penang and "a very keen gardener with considerable technical knowledge" who "did much to make the Penang Botanical Gardens the beauty spot that they are" obituary from The Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser 15 June 1927.

Curtis gained his knowledge of tropical plants as a plant hunter for the well-known nursery firm of James Veitch & Sons. He traveled to Madagascar Borneo Sumatra Java and Mauritius to find new and rare botanical species some of which are named for him. In 1884 Curtis was appointed assistant superintendent of the Forests and Gardens Department in Penang and shortly afterwards was put in charge of the newly established Penang Botanic Gardens. During his 18 years as head of the Gardens Curtis worked tirelessly to transform the garden site an abandoned granite quarry into a beautiful park stocked with thousands of native and exotic plants intended to serve as a recreation area a botanical repository and a center for the cultivation of various species. In his spare time he put together his own collections of plants from Penang Burma and neighboring coastal areas sending samples to Kew Gardens in London and to Veitch & Sons. Curtis retired from the Penang Botanic Gardens in December 1903; he was succeeded by horticulturalist Walter Fox another expert on tropical plants who is also represented in this archive.

. unknown books
