Times Square New York City on the new processes of producing talking films. 11" x 8 1/2" on his William Fox Fox Studio West 55th Street New York City letterhead August 21 1928. Very good closed file holes at top edges.

In part: ".You already know of my great interest in the successful development of talking motion pictures. I am anxious therefore too see your company produce movietone pictures that are as near perfect as it is possible to obtain from the experience we have gathered. I realize that one of the things that would retard your progress would be improper printing - and there is more danger of failure here than in any other step of the work. The only one that thoroughly understands the proper development and printing of sound pictures today is our laboratory."

Fox 1879-1952 was born in Hungary; originally named Wilhelm Fried. 173913984Amsterdam: Renard 1739. Copper-engraved sea chart with full orginal colour in very good condition. A highly decorative sea chart of the English Channel by the master-engraver Renard.

The marine atlases of 17th and 18th century Holland were best sellers. The nation that led the world in overseas commerce also led in the arts of engraving and cartography. Plus there was a large audience of mariners and mariners' parents who needed to study the obscure straits and recently discovered island groups their sons were seeing. Louis Renard 1678-1746 was from a Huguenot family. He moved from France to the Netherlands and became a book dealer and publisher in Amsterdam in 1703. Louis Renard first published Atlas de la Navigation et du Commerce qui se fait dans toutes les parties du monde in 1715. It was re-issued unchanged by the Ottens in 1739. The charts were printed from plates made by Frederick de Wit in 1675 Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas. These were corrected by Renard using primarily van Keulen.

Koeman Atlantes Neerlandici Ren 1. Renard unknown books
18917927London: Chatto & Windus 1891. First edition. Fine. Original publisher's primary blue cloth gilt there are examples of remainder bindings extant octavo. Edges untrimmed 32 pp. publisher's ads at rear mostly uncut pictorial bookplate of Herbert & Sarita Ward to front pastedown. Fore-edge foxed otherwise a Fine copy with outstanding provenance.

An extraordinary association copy of a noted rarity a sharp critique of the "Scramble for Africa". The copy of Herbert Ward sculptor writer and member of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was directly under the command of Major Edmund Barttlelot at the rear column having been appointed by Stanley as a lieutenant. The infamous column features heavily in Fox Bourne's work with the entirety of chapter five dedicated to the topic. Ward and his work My Life with Stanley's Rear Guard are quoted extensively and Fox Bourne clearly makes an example of Ward's illegal and immoral behaviour. A particularly disturbing example is the case of the execution of Burgari who was initially charged with stealing food from Ward before attempting to flee. Two officers Troup and Jameson wanted the punishment to be downgraded but Ward along with Bonny and Barttlelot voted for the death penalty.

Fox Bourne became secretary of the Aborigines Protection Society in 1889. He edited its journal Aborigines' Friend and lobbied for the rights of indigenous peoples and especially advocated for those in Africa. He stated that indigenous people had fundamental rights to their land their rites and their institutions. He later published Civilisation in Congo Land A Story of International Wrong-Doing in 1903 focusing on the horrendous treatment of the indigenous population by the Belgian government. Fine. 1891168943London: Chatto & Windus 1891. The gains have been cumbrously and expensively procured. by blundering and bad faith First edition scarce of this repost to Henry M. Stanley and condemnation of the "Scramble for Africa". "The chief reason for finding fault with this Expedition is that by exposing its blunders and ill effects something may perhaps be done to deter civilised Englishmen from ever again sanctioning or applauding such proceedings" preface. Records show only a single copy appearing at auction in the last two decades. In 1890 as the secretary of the Aborigines' Protection Society Henry Fox Bourne 1837-1909 began denouncing atrocities being committed in the Congo Free State "emerging as a fierce public critic to European territorial claims in Sub-Saharan Africa" Mitchell. Here quoting extensively from In Darkest Africa and other expedition narratives he levels charges of mendacity of motive and callousness in the face of suffering: "Stanley himself neither knows nor cares how many thousands of slaughtered natives should be added to the 311 dead Zanzibaris Soudanese and Somalis to make up the huge total of mortality incident to the methods and exploits of the Emin Relief Expedition" p. 188. Fox Bourne was nothing if not relentless: his 1903 Civilisation in Congoland elaborated on the horrendous treatment meted out to colonial subjects by the Belgian government. Provenance: with the January 1908 ownership inscription on the front free endpaper of Florence Kelsey born c.1857 the wife of Arthur Kelsey 1835-1922 an East India Company assistant surgeon who subsequently entered private practice in 1863.
