1855031226UK 1855. First Edition . Paper. Good. 48mo - over 3 - 4" tall. An Original Military Commission for the Promotion to Captain for Captain Francis Sutherland 2nd Dragoons who was present as a Troop Leader in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava in October 1854 during the Crimean War. Dated 1855 and signed by Queen Victoria and The Secretary of War Fox Maule-Ramsay 11th Earl of Dalhousie for his promotion to Captain with the 2nd Dragoons from 8 December 1854. By Her Majesty's Command" a black postage frank dated 27.5.56 28.5 x 39.5 cm. He was educated at Eton and purchased a Cornetcy in the 2nd Dragoons on 25 September 1847 and was promoted Lieutenant on 11 April 1851. He advanced to Captain in November 1854 without purchase probably as a result of his part in the action at Balaclava. During the charge he served as one of four Troop leaders in the Scots Greys and was memorably called upon to "dress the ranks" as Russian cavalry swept down on the Brigade; this entailed turning his back on the enemy and facing the men in his Troop and not moved until the second in command considered the regiment ready and brought them around. Sutherland received his medal from the hand of the Queen on 18 May 1855 and left the regiment the following year. He resided in Great Malvern Worcestershire. The year of this death is unknown. His medals were sold at Noonan's London on 22 September 2006 lot 4. They were part of the Ron Penhall Collection. Condition is good. Two long closed repaired tears to edges. 187096977New York: Harper's Weekly 1870. 1870. Good. - An original 6-1/2 inch high by 20-1/4 inch wide wood engraving portraying the historic baseball game in which the Brooklyn Atlantics finally broke the Cincinnati Red Stocking's more than 80 game winning streak. The engraving drawn by C.S. Reinhart depicts a runner on first as the pitcher winds up to throw. An umpire attired in a top hat looms behind the catcher as players watch from the bench in the foreground. Brooklyn's skyline is seen behind the crowd in the background. The image is engraved on newsprint along the top of the double-page centerfold sheet pages 424 & 425 of Harper's Weekly above a 6-1/2 inch high by 20-1/4 inch wide wood engraving of a horse race titled "Jerome Park - The Race for the Hunter's Plate. - Sketched by Stanley Fox". Both images are engraved on a 16-1/2 inch high by 23 inch wide sheet with text printed on the verso. Folded twice with a few tiny holes along the vertical center fold. There is some spotting staining and speckling to the edges with a large brown dampstain at left touching on the horse racing image. Good. <p>Cincinnati's Red Stockings had held the all-time best perfect season record through 1869 winning all of their 67 games that year. Their record remained undefeated through the first part of the 1870 season until the memorable game against Brooklyn's Atlantic team on June 14 1870 at the Capitoline Grounds in Brooklyn. Though Atlantic had already lost a game to the Red Stockings they defeated Exford to regain the pennant in 1869 claiming the championship under the rules at the time which more closely resembled those of boxing. An estimated crowd of 15000 witnessed Atlantic's 8-7 victory over the Red Stockings in eleven innings. New York: Harper's Weekly, 1870. unknown
