18605295Liége: NP 1860. First edition - an original sketch / caricature believed to be signed and drawn by Renard / Draner. Entitled "Croquades Liégeoises No 52" to the top of the sketch this is drawn and signed in pencil with the title and text below in black ink. It is a good clean image with a touch of foxing / marking only. Now framed under an olive green passe partout and plastic protective cover. This has been professionally framed and so is sealed to the edges. As a result we haven't been able to examine the page outside of the mount. Sketch is 27cm x 19.5cm. Mount is 34.5cm x 27cm. The image shows Orpheus playing his lyre to a jury who are not looking particularly impressed. "Which proves that Orpheus couldn't soften the hearts of others." Jules Renard 1833-1926 known by the pseudonym Draner was a Belgian painter illustrator and caricaturist. Born in Liege he moved to Paris in 1861. He became known for his military caricatures and his work as a costume designer for theatre and opera houses in Paris. He died in Paris in 1926 at the age of 92. Première édition - une esquisse / caricature originale que l'on croit signée et dessinée par Renard / Draner. Intitulée "Croquades Liégeoises No 52" en haut de l'esquisse celle-ci est dessinée et signée au crayon avec le titre et le texte en dessous à l'encre noire. Il s'agit d'une bonne image propre avec seulement quelques rousseurs / marques. L'œuvre est maintenant encadrée sous un passe partout vert olive et une couverture de protection en plastique. Elle a été encadrée par un professionnel et est donc scellée sur les bords. Par conséquent nous n'avons pas été en mesure d'examiner la page en dehors de l'encadrement. L'esquisse mesure 27 cm x 195 cm. Le support mesure 345 cm x 27 cm. L'image montre Orphée jouant de sa lyre devant un jury qui n'a pas l'air particulièrement impressionné. "Ce qui prouve qu'Orphée ne pouvait pas adoucir le cœur des autres." Jules Renard 1833-1926 connu sous le pseudonyme de Draner était un peintre illustrateur et caricaturiste belge. Né à Liège il s'installe à Paris en 1861. Il s'est fait connaître par ses caricatures militaires et son travail de costumier pour le théâtre et l'opéra de Paris. Il est mort à Paris en 1926 à l'âge de 92 ans. NP unknown

They state "The Anatomical Museum -- Oh come on! What's gotten into him - My dear Chet we're wrong to come here and learn about dinner" Jules Renard 1833-1926 known by the pseudonym Draner was a Belgian painter illustrator and caricaturist. Born in Liege he moved to Paris in 1861. He became known for his military caricatures and his work as a costume designer for theatre and opera houses in Paris. Intitulé « Croquades Liégeoises n° 49 » en haut du croquis celui-ci est dessiné au crayon et signé à l'encre avec le titre et le texte en dessous à l'encre noire. Sous l'image on peut lire « Le Musée Anatomique » accompagné de deux lignes de texte. L'image est de bonne qualité propre avec seulement quelques traces de rousseur / marques. Elle est désormais encadrée sous un passe-partout vert olive et une protection en plastique. L'encadrement a été réalisé par un professionnel et est donc scellé sur les bords. Nous n'avons donc pas pu examiner la page en dehors du passe-partout. L'esquisse mesure 27 cm x 195 cm. Le passe-partout mesure 345 cm x 27 cm. Deux gentlemen universitaires se tiennent devant une foule. Ils déclarent : « Le musée anatomique. Oh allez ! Qu'est-ce qui lui prend Mon cher Chet nous avons tort de venir ici pour en savoir plus sur le dîner » Jules Renard 1833-1926 connu sous le pseudonyme de Draner était un peintre illustrateur et caricaturiste belge. Thomas Colcott Fox "1849-1916 was the younger brother of William Tilbury Fox with whom he was closely associated in the early years. He too had been born at Broughton the eighth son of the surgeon Luther Owen Fox. From Queenswood he went to London's University College and thence with a scholarship to Peterhouse Cambridge where he rowed in the college first eight. He was a countryman at heart enjoying most country pursuits playing cricket for Hampshire and the Incogniti no mean feat for an oarsman he was also reputedly a good skater and a proficient golfer. At University College his brother was in charge of the Skin Department and "Tommy" benefited from fraternal guidance and teaching. He proved to be a model student a careful observer and later became an exceptional diagnostician. Like Crocker he wrote articles for Quain's Dictionary and for Allbutt's System of Medicine. The brothers co-operated on the third edition of the Epitome of Skin Disease which was published in 1876. His first appointment was to the Victoria Hospital for Children a post he relinquished on moving in 1883 to the Westminster Hospital where he was to stay for 30 years. He observed his cases with meticulous care and had an uncanny ability to identify a cryptic primary lesion. His abiding interest was in children and their diseases; this never wavered and it was to prompt his particular study of fungal infections of the skin and hair. He described granuloma annulare the "ringed eruption" along with Crocker and it was he simultaneously with Thibierge in France who incriminated tuberculosis as the cause oferythema induratum. Private practice had no attractions it was hospital work and mycology that he found absorbing. Though he wrote many fine papers he never embarked on his own textbook. He followed Radcliffe Crocker as President of the Section in the newly formed Royal Society of Medicine and he proved an admirable chairman; his profound knowledge of the literature and his own considerable experience brought him great respect."
