Condition: This original 18th century copper plate engraved map is toned with some very modest foxing but in very good overall condition. There are tears to the right margin and folds as issued. Dimensions: 24" x 24" Details: This map was published to accompany Buffon's treatise on magnetism and magnets This "Map of declinations and inclinations of the magnetized needle drawn up according to the table of magnetic observations made by travelers since the year 1775" shows geomagnetic variation. Although it has at times been attributed to La Perouse the map and those published with this one predicted his voyage and include information from observations made on the voyages of Cook de Bougainville Carteret and others. . . unknown
