Tout comme l'originale, elle n'est pas illustrée. Le cinquième et dernier volume contient le Traité de l'aimant et de ses usages, dans lequel il évoque longuement le compas. L'ouvrage a paru pour la première fois au sein des volumes XXV à XXIX de l'Histoire naturelle générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi qui a paru entre 1749-1788. C'est le dernier ouvrage de Buffon qui décède en 1788. Pour le composer, le célèbre naturaliste s'est adjoint comme collaborateurs l'abbé Bexon et Faujas de Saint-Fond. "[Buffon] attachait, avec raison, une grande importance à cette oeuvre [...] qui constituait alors le premier grand ouvrage méthodique sur les roches, sur les minerais, leur répartition à travers le monde, leur mode d'exploitation, leur origine et leur âge." (Collectif. Buffon, Paris, MNHN, 1952, p. 44) Peu commun. Ex-libris héraldique de Alb. Renaud d'Avène, marquis des Méloizes. Le premier tome portait des armes qui ont été rageusement "caviardées" par des fleurons dorés : un motif de fleurette répété recouvre le fer sur les plats et une roulette tapisse les entrenerfs. Sur les pages de titre, tout ce qui renvoie à la royauté ou à la noblesse a été biffé à l'encre, tandis que les fleurons aux armes de France sont recouverts par des étiquettes manuscrites au nom de Thabaud de Linetière, comportant la date de 1816. Petits manques et épidermures, quelques rousseurs et taches éparses. Caissons des dos provenant d'une autre reliure. Mayr The Growth of Biological Thought. p 330 Buffon's work was based on the methods of observation and experimentation. He raised many of the fundamental problems of biology in a scientific context. One of Buffon's most important contributions was the popularization of the old earth theory in opposition to Archbishop Ussher's biblical earth time-line. <br><br> Buffon was an important pre-cursor to Darwin. Cited as the father of biogeography Buffon's Law postulated that creatures "improved" and "degenerated" after dispersing from a center of creation. He based his theory on comparative anatomy studies. Buffon tried to explain the origin of living things by spontaneous generation of elementary particles and its development as a consequence of climate and diet. The last volume in this set includes 'Traité de l"Aimant'.This was an incredibly important resource on the subject of natural history in eighteenth century France providing a wealth of information on all living things.'Histoire Naturelle des Mineraux' was a departure from the rest of Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle' set as 'Mineraux' was not illustrated. Contemporary full red morocco binding. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Title and volume labels in black morocco. Triple fillet frame on covers. Roulette on leading edges and board-edges. Gilt edges. Domino paper with gilt stars. Corners rubbed. Very handsome copy perfectly bound in a master binding very fresh. The Traité de l'aimant is the last work published during the author's lifetime and closes the Histoire naturelle whose edition spanned fifty years and which enjoyed success comparable to Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie. The treatise proper is followed by numerous tables of observations on the inclination of the magnetic needle with the names of travelers and navigators in the southern and northern hemispheres according to different latitudes. Qualche brunitura qualche rara piccola macchia un paio di strappi al margine bianco ma nel complesso incisioni in condizioni molto buone e di ottimo stampo. Le incisioni in bn sono opera di Scattaglia mentre quelle colorate sono di Benard. Le tavole sono precedute solo dalla pagina di titolo Planches des quadrupedes. Première partie con bollo di proprietà vistoso e con ex libris Polesini al retro del piatto. Il volume di quadrupedi eseguito da Daubenton faceva parte della pubblicazione Tableau encyclopédique et méthodique des trois regnes de la nature pubblicato sia a Parigi da Pankoucke sia a Padova alla Stamperia del Seminario. Legatura coeva in mezza pelle del primo Ottocento con titolo dorato al dorso qualche spellatura e piatti con carta marmorizzata. Louis Daubenton 1716-1799 descrisse circa 200 specie di quadrupedi nei primi volumi dell'opera di Buffon con tale esattezza e precisione da servire da base allo sviluppo dell'anatomia comparata. Pietro Scattaglia 1739-1810 veneziano fu incisore ed editore di stampe nella sua Calcografia Magna. unknown
