Very good. 6 x 4.5 inches wraps very good light weaer to edges minor soil and spottiness text very clean with bookplate of Josiah Lilly's Foster Hall collection. 96 pp. Horace Waters was a hymnologist and publisher who collaborated frequently with Stephen Foster and Susan Parkhurst. Lilly the head of the pharmaceutical company and namesake of the Lilly Library was a dedicated collector of music autographs and memorabilia related to the life and works of Stephen Foster a native of Pittsburgh. He built a special "music hall" in the outskirts of Indianapolis to house his collection but in 1937 donated the collection to the University of Pittsburgh which dedicated a Foster hall the Stephen Collins Foster Memorial of its own in the newly constructed Cathedral of Learning. Some years ago we acquired some duplicates from that collection and this was among them. Nice association copy! Horace Waters & Son unknown

An important letter regarding subscriptions to erect a monument in memory of "the lamented Duke of York" who has been "has been falsely and shamefully traduced by the Catholic Leaders for his constitutional candid & manly opposition to any further concessions being allowed them" and "for his resolute declaration to uphold the principles which placed the desired House of Brunswick on the Throne". Also referring to a Madame des Mallet. Good condition with edge toning/creasing and browning to folds/edges. Includes a typed transcript by a previous owner with speculation over the identity of Madame des Mallet including whether she might have been a mistress to the Duke of Kent.<br /><br /><i>Prince Frederick Duke of York and Albany 16 August 1763 – 5 January 1827; second son of King George III. Mocked perhaps unfairly in the rhyme "The Grand Old Duke of York": The towering Duke of York Column on Waterloo Place just off The Mall London was completed in 1834 as a memorial to Prince Frederick.</i> ALS

A textbook only sold by subscription that seeks to teach the reader arithmetic and world geography by using verse often rhyming verse to help the reader memorize the important terms and formulas. For example in describing the divisions of land the following poem is used: "Of land and its divisions read the stories; Peninsulas Continents Islands Promontories And Isthmuses and Capes and Mountains high Volcanoes Shores and Deserts wet and dry." The book covers both the technically terms in geography meridians tropics latitude longitude etc. and all continents and countries of the world. Additionally they provided some historical and cultural information on the countries as well such as information on the construction of the Great Wall in China and that Holland is one of the most populous districts on the globe. Numerous black and white illustration accompany the text both in the form of maps and illustrations on the geographical and architectural wonders of each locality described. At the end of the book there are six pages of the "Rules of Arithmetic In Verse." Discussed in this section is everything from subtraction to multiplication and decimal fractions to compound interest. Front cover title: "The Poetical Geography with the Rules of Arithmetic in Verse." Inscribed on front cover and inside cover with "Henry Alcott Anthony Rd." 80 pages. Yellow illustrated covers. Later edition of this collection of stories by William Russell writing as 'Waters' originally published as The Recollections of a Policeman in the US 1852 and Recollections of a Detective Police-Officer in London 1856. The book was first published under this title by Chambers with three additional stories added in 1878.
