First published in 1868 Darwin's longest work was extensively revised for the second edition of 1875 which became the final text. It is especially notable for containing in Chapter XXVII the first statement of the author's provisional hypothesis of pangenesis. Prelims spotted pages with a slightly dusty feel and some occasional very tiny spots and small marks. There are also a number of pages with creased or indented corners and wear from reading pages rough cut. Some wear to the leather and boards though the binding remains sound otherwise very good. Sir Thomas William Evans 1820-92 of Allestree Hall was the Liberal MP for the local South Derbyshire constituency and was also the first chairman of Derbyshire County Council. Freeman 836. First published in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society and then as two offprints this edition is often described as the "first edition in book form". Considerably expanded from its predecessors it was the first to appear in hard covers and the first to bear Murray's imprint.
