Notes: A fine example of this journal written about Darwin’s five-year voyage on the Beagle from 1831 to 1836 the publication of which established him as both an eminent geologist and a popular author. “Darwin's journal encompasses every observable detail of the animals birds and plants he encountered on the five-year voyage. It includes minute descriptions and even sketches of the movements and habits of hitherto unfamiliar species. Accompanying the entries are his own conclusions analyses and classificatory notes that demonstrate his skill and talent as a naturalist.†With frontispiece protected by tissue guard and a profusion of other plates many double-page.

Charles Robert Darwin 1809 – 1882 was an English naturalist geologist and biologist renown for his contributions to the understanding of evolutionary biology and he has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history. His proposition that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor is now generally accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace he introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding.
The Voyage of the Beagle is the title most commonly given to the present volume first published in 1839 as Journal and Remarks which quickly brought him considerable fame and respect. This was the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle the other volumes of which were written or edited by the commanders of the ships. Journal and Remarks covers Darwin's part in the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle. Due to the popularity of Darwin's account the publisher reissued it later in 1839 as Darwin's Journal of Researches and the revised second edition published in 1845 used this title. In 1890 the publisher John Murray issued a new illustrated edition of the Journal.

Size: 8vo.202x136 mm Pages: Blank 2. Half title. Blank 2. Frontispiece. Title. Blank. Preface vii-x. According to Glick

"'Origin of Species' greatest impact on German biological practice lay in the introduction of historical modes of explanation for the observable phenomena of living nature. The historical approach to nature was rejected not only by the opponents of evolution but also by the idealist evolutionist. Whether they favored a teleological or a reductionist biology the idealists could not see the point of a theory that emphasized the irregularities and exceptions in the organic world. In the timeless real of idealist thinking unchanging laws worked out an inevitable destiny. But Darwin taught his followers to look at living beings one by one. 1880BB1558London: John Murray 1880. Second Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine. Second Edition of one of the scarcer Darwin titles one of only 1250 copies with a new preface in which Darwin states that "the text has been left as it originally appeared excepting that a few errors have been corrected." According to Freeman "This is then the definitive text." 8vo: xvi35232advertisementspp with 15 woodcuts in the text and 38 tables. Publisher's standard green pebbled cloth covers paneled in blind spine lettered and decorated in gilt brown end papers. Inserted advertisements may be as late as January 1882 per Freeman. A Fine copy completely unopened. Freeman 1280. Darwin recalled the writing of this title in his autobiography: "This book consists chiefly of the several papers on heterostyled flowers originally published by the Linnean Society corrected with much new matter added together with observations on some other cases in which the same plant bears two kinds of flowers. As before remarked no little discovery of mine ever gave me so much pleasure as the making out the meaning of heterostyled flowers. The results of crossing such flowers in an illegitimate manner I believe to be very important as bearing on the sterility of hybrids; although these results have been noticed by only a few persons." 189274513London: John Murray 1892. Second Edition Revised - Fourth Thousand. Hardcover. Very Good. First published in 1868 this book began as an expansion of the first two chapters of On the Origin of Species 1859: "Variation under Domestication" and "Variation under Nature" and it developed into one of his largest works; Darwin 1809-82 referred to it as his "big book." The first volume deals with the variations introduced into species as a result of domestication through changes in climate diet breeding and an absence of predators. He began with an examination of dogs and cats comparing them with their wild counterparts and moved on to investigate horses and asses; pigs cattle sheep and goats; domestic rabbits; domestic pigeons; fowl; and finally cultivated plants. The work is a masterpiece of nineteenth-century scientific investigation and a key text in the development of Darwin's own thought and of the wider discipline of evolutionary biology.

Octavo two volumes: xiv 473 p. x 495 p. with publisher's advertisements 43 textual figures and numerous tables.
