A little minor spotting contents leaves toned. Extremities bumped spine darkened and torn at head boards a little marked and endpapers rubbed. Newspaper clipping tipped to front flyleaf. An early issue of the definitive edition of Darwin’s first published book containing his final additions to the text. Originally published in 1839 the extensively revised second edition followed in 1845 and was reprinted several times all in a small-format Colonial and Home Library series. For this edition the stereotypes of the text are printed on larger paper and Darwin adds a new postscript; the whole is then bound to match the early editions of the Origin of Species so giving ‘the whole book a much better appearance’ Freeman. In this copy the ads at the rear are dated January 1863 - in the earliest copies they were December 1861 and Freeman notes they can be as late as September 1868. The next printing was 1870. Much wear to the tips corners and edges of the book spine legible some foxing to the preliminaries much less in the text 9 vignette illustrations in the text. Indexed with a 10 page list of "scientific works" published by Appleton last page shows an ink mark else clean and unmarked. Binding tight although the hinges are cracking. "The second voyage of HMS Beagle from 27 December 1831 to 2 October 1836 was the second survey expedition of HMS Beagle made under her newest commander Robert FitzRoy. FitzRoy had thought of the advantages of having someone onboard who could investigate geology and sought a naturalist to accompany them as a supernumerary. At the age of 22 the graduate Charles Darwin hoped to see the tropics before becoming a parson and accepted the opportunity. He was greatly influenced by reading Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology the book is dedicated to Lyell during the voyage. By the end of the expedition Darwin had made his name as a geologist and fossil collector and the publication of his journal later known as The Voyage of the Beagle gave him wide renown as a writer." from Wikipedia. Binder’s ticket of Edmonds & Remnants London to rear pastedown ownership inscription to title-page. An early issue of the revised edition of Darwin’s first published book. Despite the title-page advertising it as a new edition it is an otherwise-unchanged reprint of the 1845 2nd edition from plates. This second edition was substantially revised from its initial publication as a supplementary volume to Captain Fitzroy’s 2 volume ‘Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle’ in 1839 and despite the addition of a new postscript in 1860 this 1845 version remained the definitive lifetime text. This issue and its immediate predecessor are issued and bound as part of publisher Murray’s ‘Colonial and Home Library’ of cheap reprints described by Freeman as ‘a miserable piece of printing in small type with mean margins’ while the 1860 edition was printed on larger paper and given a green cloth binding to match the previous year’s ‘On The Origin of Species’ and reflects the growth in status and importance of the work and its author.
