Charles Robert Darwin FRS FRGS FLS FZS JP 12 February 1809 - 19 April 1882 was an English naturalist geologist and biologist widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. His proposition that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor is now generally accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace he introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process he called natural selection in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history and was honored by burial in Westminster Abbey. This was published to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin s On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. In his landmark study Darwin theorized that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. These ideas flew in the face of long-held beliefs and the book immediately became one of the most controversial scientific works in history and it still remains so today. Now for the first time Darwin s classic is fully and handsomely illustrated with more than 350 illustrations and photos many of them in brilliant color. Reproductions from Darwin s The Voyage of the Beagle his journal of the travels that led to his remarkable breakthrough appear throughout inviting readers to experience Darwin' s journey and to understand how he developed his theory of evolution. In addition brief excerpts from his letters diaries and correspondence bring both Darwin the man and his revolutionary discovery to life. Sterling Signature paperback

145367Rare autograph from Charles Darwin boldly signed "With M. Darwin's Best Compliments." Matted and framed with a portrait of Darwin. The entire piece measures 11.9 inches by 9 inches. An exceptional presentation. Charles Darwin was an English naturalist geologist and biologist best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species. By the 1870s the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. However many favored competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences explaining the diversity of life. unknown

1987386273UK: Cambridge University Press 1987. 1st pbk. Softcover. Very Good/None. Softcover 692 pages. Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species is unquestionably one of the chief landmarks in biology. The Origin as it is widely known was literally only an abstract of the manuscript Darwin had originally intended to complete and publish as the formal presentation of his views on evolution. Compared with the Origin his original long manuscript work on Natural Selection which is presented here and made available for the first time in printed form has more abundant examples and illustrations of Darwin's argument plus an extensive citation of sources. Name on title page otherwise a clean sharp copy. Record # 386273 Cambridge University Press paperback
