This was originally published ten years earlier in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London. Dark green covers are generally clean with some wear to the spine ends and corners with a few small areas of bubbling and a couple of tiny marks. Top edge a little darkened front free endpaper is detached front hinge cracked and a little loose feeling but the rest of the page block is securely bound. The next page is the half title page unsure whether there is supposed to be a blank page before that. Half title has a previous owners name. Pages a little age toned there are some pages with slightly creased corners from having been read plus a few pages with a spot or small mark. The rear free endpaper is starting to come loose and the rear board also has a slightly loose feel. The pages are slightly indented to the bottom inside corner at the spine possibly has been dropped at some point. Good condition. viii 208 pages 32 pages of publishers works at the back dated January 1875. <br/> <br/> John Murray hardcover

Second Edition Third Thousand with 13 woodcuts in the text small inoffensive label scars to front free endpaper; original green arches-style cloth gilt back chocolate endpapers uncut small skilful repair to bottom of backstrip a remarkably well-preserved bright crisp copy. With 32pp publisher's catalogue dated January 1882 bound in at end. The woodcut illustrations are by George Darwin the author's son. The first printing of the first edition was in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London dated 1867 but issued in 1865. The second edition the first in book form greatly revised and enlarged was published in 1875 with a second 'Thousand' actually only 500 copies in the following year. The present edition is the first to carry the author's appendix to the Preface and a five-line list of errata on last leaf of Contents. Since these refer to author's errors rather than to literals and remain uncorrected through subsequent reprintings from stereos this represents the final text of the work. The binding is signed on front free endpaper verso. The publisher's catalogue sometimes found at end has not been bound with this copy. The first printing of the first edition was in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London dated 1867 but issued in 1865. The present edition the first in book form is greatly revised and enlarged; Freeman notes that 1500 copies were printed. The woodcut illustrations are by George Darwin the author's son. SCARCE. Some wear to the leather and boards though the binding remains sound otherwise very good. Sir Thomas William Evans 1820-92 of Allestree Hall was the Liberal MP for the local South Derbyshire constituency and was also the first chairman of Derbyshire County Council. Freeman 836. First published in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society and then as two offprints this edition is often described as the "first edition in book form". Considerably expanded from its predecessors it was the first to appear in hard covers and the first to bear Murray's imprint. Occasional pencil marginalia. Fine copy. Rare first edition offprint issue of Darwin's work on climbing plants. An exceptionally scarce survival in this offprint form seldom encountered on the market. An item for the discerning collector of Darwiniana.The first edition of this work was published on June 12 1865 and occurs in three forms - all from the same setting of type. The first makes up most of a double part Nos 33 and 34 of Vol. 9 of the 'Journal of the Linnean Society of London Botany'. It was also issued simultaneously as an offprint which occurs in two distinct forms. Both have tipped in title leaves which differ in the note on the source of the original and the publisher's imprint. The copy offered here is Freeman's first form 834 with the note on the source of the original given as From the JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY and the imprint the same as that of the part except that it has been reset and there is no comma after Roberts. This is the commercial offprint which was offered for sale by the Linnean Society at 4s. The second form of the offprint is assumed to be the author's offprint of which Freeman had only seen one copy. Freeman Journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History 1973 64: 293. The two forms of the offprint also differ in the wrapper this copy is bound without the wrapper.The second edition of this work was later published in book form by John Murray in 1875 and is a revised and enlarged version of this paper.Freeman 834.
