With publisher's advertisement leaf at end. The sixth edition first issued in 1872 is the last published in Darwin's lifetime and contains his final major corrections and revisions. It is the first edition with the title The Origin of Species and includes among many other revisions a new chapter inserted to confute the views of the Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. Green cloth stamped in gilt and blind; covers a little rubbed marked and flecked with slight wear to the extremities; scattered foxing generally very light and a few marks internally; tiny tear to the top margin of five consecutive leaves pages 65-74 expertly sealed; a few other minor signs of age and use; a very good copy. The sixth edition was the first to use the term 'evolution' and to drop the word 'On' from the title. It was also a cheaper popular edition with smaller format and type. This copy is from a later printing but before Darwin's final changes were introduced in the 'Eighteenth Thousand' issued in 1876 Freeman page 80. This RARE hardcover Sixth Edition originally published January 1872 is an impression from 1900. Published by John Murray Albemarle Street of London and printed at The Edinburgh Press. In forest green cloth with an ornate dark green design and lettering on the front cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book is in Fair condition without a dust jacket. The covers show heavy wear to the corners exposing boards under the worn cloth and spine ends. Missing headcap and tailcap at the spine ends. Light blue stain to the rear cover cloth. Light soiling to the spine cloth. There is also some wear/abrasion to the rear board. Edges of text block show toning. The binding is square but has a little give to it. Hinges properly repaired with acid-free neutral pH archival glue. Minor abrasion to the front paste-down and front flyleaf. Foxing to endpapers and paste-downs. The original tissue guard opposite the frontispiece is still intact as is the pull-out chart between pages 140 and 141. The interior pages are clean and unmarked though tanned with age as expected.
