Edizione definitiva dell’opera del celebre naturalista e medico olandese, Franciscus de le Boë Sylvius (anche noto come Franz de le Boë; Hanau, 15 marzo 1614 – Leida, 15 novembre 1672). L’autore, appena laureatosi a Basilea nel 1637, compì numerosi viaggi i Francia, Paesi Bassi e Germania per approfondire le ultime scoperte mediche. Nel 1658 prese il posto di Albert Kyper nella cattedra di medicina nell’Università di Leida. Le Boe è considerato il fondatore della iatrochimica che mirava a interpretare i fenomeni fisiologici e biologici in termini chimici, riportandoli fondamentalmente a processi di “fermentazione” e di “effervescenza”. A lui si devono diverse scoperte mediche come il ruolo dei tubercoli nella tisi polmonare e a lui si devono le òrime descrizioni del canale del mesencefalo e una delle scissure principali del telencefalo che prendono da lui il loro nome (acquedotto di Silvio e Scissura di Silvio). Alla sua scuola di formarono fra gli altri Swammerdam, R. De Graaf e Stenone. Grande esperto della struttura del cervello a lui si debbono le annotazioni delle Institutiones medicae (1641) di C. Bartholinus. Convinto assertore delle teorie di Harvey sulla circolazione del sangue ne fu uno dei primi divulgatori.
