About the Book:- “Bagh o Bahar” is not an original work, but an urdu translation, by Mir Amman, of the Persian romance, entitled “Kissah-i Chahar Darwesh,” or “story of the four Darweshes,” composed by the celebrated poet, Amir Khusrau, of Delhi. The Tale of the four Darweshes has now become a work of so much general interest-inasmuch as it is the book in which every officer in India, civil or military, must undergo an examination- that no apology scems requisite for presenting the public for the first time, with a translation of it. About the Author:-Edward Backhouse Eastwick CB (1814 –1883) was an English orientalist, diplomat and Conservative Member of Parliament. He wrote and edited a number of books on South Asian countries. These included a Sindhi vocabulary and a grammar of the Hindustani language. He was educated at Charterhouse and at Merton College, Oxford. He joined the Bombay infantry in 1836, but, owing to his talent for languages, was soon given a political post. In 1843 he translated the Persian Kessahi Sanjan, or History of the Arrival of the Parsees in India; and he wrote a Life of Zoroaster, a Sindhi vocabulary, and various papers in the transactions of the Bombay Asiatic Society. In 1845 he was appointed professor of Hindustani at Haileybury College. Two years later he published a Hindustani grammar, and in subsequent years a new edition of Saadi's Gulistán, with a translation in prose and verse, also an edition with vocabulary of the Hindi translation of Chatur Chuj Misr's Prem Sagar, and translations of the Bagh-o-Bahar, and of the Anwar-i Suhaili of Bidpai. In 1851 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. The Title 'THE BAGH O BAHAR OR THE GARDEN AND THE SPRING written/authored/edited by EDWARD B. EASTWICK', published in the year 2021. About The Book : This little work should have reached a fourth edition may be taken as pretty clear indication that ithas met a recognised want amongst our Indian fellow-subjects, for whose instruction and guidance it was originally issued. To render it worthy of continued favour, and to make it additionally useful, has been myanxious endeavour. Of any merit which this edition may be found to possess over the preceding one, a very large portion isdue to Dr. J. E. T. Aitchison, C.I.E., Surgeon-Major in H.M. Indian (Bengal) Medical Service, who, witha liberality that demands my warmest thanks, placed at my disposal an elaborate MS. commentary on the Third Edition, embodying his own professional experience in India (extending over many years), and supplying the vernacular names of the various drugs in the Punjábí, Kashmírí, and Leh languages. Of this document it need hardly be said I have availed myself largely, my only regret being that I could not insertit in extenso, but to have done this would greatly have exceeded the prescribed limits of the work. As itis, Dr. Aitchison has laid me under a vast obligation, which I am only too happy to have this opportunity of acknowledging. Five new articles have been added to the List of Drugs: two at the suggestion of Dr. Aitchison; namely,(1) Sugar, and (2) Kerosene Oil, which latter, owing to its extensive use for lighting purposes during the past few years, is now obtainable in nearly every bazaar in the country; the other three being the (3) Cinchona Febrifuge (Quinetum), (4) Petroleum, and (5) Rock Salt. About The Author : Edward John Waring (14 December 1819–22 January 1891) was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and a surgeon in the British East India Company. He wrote several books on medicine including A Manual of Practical Therapeutics (1865), Pharmacopoeia of India (1866), and the two-volume Bibliotheca Therapeutica (1878). Waring was the sixth son of Captain Henry Waring of the Royal Navy and Margaret, daughter of Jacob Henry Franks of Misterton Hall, Leicestershire. A brother of Edward was John Burley Waring while another brother Francis Robert Waring was an anti-evolutionist. Edward was born in Tiverton, studied at Lyme Regis under George Roberts and Ilminster Grammar School under Rev. J. Allen before going to study medicine at Bristol. He was made CIE in 1881 and was a Fellow of the Royal Medico-Chirurgical Society and an honorary member of the Société de Pharmacie, Paris. He gifted his collection of books to the Army Medical School at Netley and he supported the London Medical Mission at St. Giles's. He began to lose sight in 1884 but a cataract removal operation restored some sight. He died at his home in Clifton Gardens, Maids Vale on 22 January 1891.
