Illustrated with three hand-coloured plates and one plain plate. small octavo pp 4 75i & 32 page publisher's catalogue very slightly age-toned internally one plate is frayed and browned and has obviously been loose at some point and re-inserted rather poorly original red cloth with ornat gilt decoration on the front cover rubbed at the margins slightly marked the front joint is exposed but not weak the spine is worn in several places. RARE. Sarah Fitton was an Irish writer who co-authored with her sister Elizabeth the highly popular 'Conversations on Botany'. Original one-half black morocco leather over dark green leather-covered boards spine with five raised bands each decorated with small gilt horizontal lines and sent off by double gilt panel lines red morocco title label in one compartment lettered in gilt volume numbered stamped in gilt in one other compartment and with gilt floral design vignette in the remaining four other compartments all page edges are spectacled in red lg 8vo. According to Edward Step who revised the volume: "All the coloured plates have been specially compared for this edition with the carefully hand-coloured originals; and the colour printing has been thereby improved." Indeed the colored plates are bright with crisp edges to the flowers and leaves and with vivid coloration. This copy is also beautifully bound. No ownership marks and few signs of use. Three volumes small quarto pp viii 96 6; iv 188; iv 188 three vignette title pages an extra hand-coloured title page in the first volume with 137 fine hand coloured plates all edges gilt bound in a Victorian half morocco and cloth the spines highly decorated in gilt a little rubbed at the joints and corners the cloth sides slightly marked and very slightly bubbled in a few small places. In Volume 3 title page and the first two plates and text are a little stained at the upper corner the subsequent three plates and text pages very faintly marked; otherwise this is a remarkably clean and bright set internally - the plates all have their protective tissues which very occasionally have a faint spot of foxing but nothing has transfered to the surface of the plate. With the book label of Carl Wendell Carlsmith 1904 - 1932 on each of the first blank pages in each volume. RARE AND EXCEPTIONALLY DIFFICULT TO FIND COMPLETE. George Beauchamp Knowles was a surgeon and Professor of Botany at Birmingham School of Medicine. Frederic Westcott was a Secretary of the Birmingham Botanical and Horticultural Society and contributed papers on the Shropshire flora to The Phytologist. First Edition. Half Leather. Very Good.
