Five wonderful engraved plates by a remarkable group of graphic artists; with title vignette; head-pieces, etc. Plates: Frontis by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781), engraved by Augustin de Saint-Aubin (1736-1807); "Spring" by Le Prince, without name of engraver; "Autumn" by Benoit Louis Prevost (1747-1804), engraved by Jean Francois Rousseau; "Winter" by Gravelot [Hubert Francois Bourguignon danville](1699-1773), engraved by Nicolas de Launay (1739-1792). Vignettes and headpieces by Pierre Philippe Choffard (1731-1809). The plates are dated mainly 1767-1769. 8vo. 210 mm. Plates slightly foxed. Text very clean. Marbled edges and endpapers. Original French full leather binding with marbled decoration. Spine tooled in gold gilt. Binding somewhat worn at extremities, but still attractive. Large printed French bookplate with the text: De la Douce Lumiere / De L'Ombre / De La Flamme / Et des Livres Amis [Soft light / the shadow / flame / and friends books] . Saint-Lambert (1716-1803) began writing poetry in his adolescence and belonged to the circle around Francoise de Graffigny in Luneville. Première édition française traduite et éditée par François Bertet-Dupiney et Émile Dubreuil-Hélion. Professeur à l'Université de Giessen, Justus Liebig (1803-1873) a perfectionné la technique d’analyse élémentaire des composés organiques développée par Lavoisier. Il est considéré comme le fondateur de l'agriculture industrielle et des produits alimentaires ont été diffusés par la firme qui porte son nom. Le contenu de ces "lettres" dépasse largement le cadre scientifique pour présenter une véritable "philosophie de l'histoire". Il a exercé une influence durable, jusqu’à nos jours auprès d’économistes écologistes. Karl Marx a cité l’oeuvre de Liebig pour analyser l’exploitation des sols dans le système capitaliste. 3 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with 3 frontispieces, decorative titles, numerous illustrations in the text and coloured pictorial endpapers, original cloth (red/green/blue respectively), yellow cloth backs lettered in gilt, coloured tops (lightly faded as usual), a very good, bright, clean set in dustwrapper, the wrapper of first volume moderately rubbed at backstrip. Beverley Nichols' second and best-known trilogy forms a delightful chronicle of the enhancement of his Georgian manor house and gardens at Ashtead in Surrey. It comprises 'Merry Hall' (1951), 'Laughter on the Stairs (1953) and 'Sunlight on the Lawn' (1956). An abridged version of the trilogy was issued in a single volume as 'The Gift of a Home' in 1972. SCARCE AS A SET IN THIS CONDITION.
