Engraved armorial bookplate of William Markham, Becca Lodge, Yorkshire. Varro was known as the most erudite man and the most prolific writer of his times. He is estimated to have written about 620 works. He served as Pompey's legate in Spain and fought at Pharsalus, but was reconciled with Caesar, who made him director of the proposed public library. At the time of the Second Triumvirate his villa was plundered, and he himself was proscribed. He fled, but was pardoned by Augustus. In his writing scarcely a field of contemporary learning was left untouched. Of his many works only this one remains intact, De re rustica libri III. Written when Varro was 80 years old, as an Aristotelian dialogue on farming, in three parts: Agriculture proper; husbandry and the larger animals; and smaller farm stock, such as birds, bees, and fish. This is one of the most important books of its kind extant from antiquity. This edition was edited by Joseph Juste Scaliger (1540-1609) and annotated by Adrien Turnhbe (1512-1565), Pietro Vettori (1499-1585) and Antonio Agustmn (1517-1586). It was printed by the great Henri Estienne. It is quite scarce. Adams V-283; Schreiber 207 ; Renouard 148:2; Schweiger II:1116. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SMALL BOX 2
