br. "Vi è in molti fisici una specie di fede nell'esattezza dei nuovi principi, piuttosto che un chiaro intendimento di essi". Invece un "chiaro intendimento" si prefigge innanzi tutto questo libro di uno scienziato non ancora trentenne, che aveva già contribuito a rivoluzionare la fisica del Novecento. Pubblicati nel 1930, "I principi fisici della teoria dei quanti" rielaborano le lezioni tenute da Werner Heisenberg all'Università di Chicago nella primavera dell'anno precedente. Di quell'esposizione didattica conservano la perfetta chiarezza nel divulgare i fondamenti della meccanica quantistica, ma si segnalano anche per la classicità di uno stile concettuale e morale che la prorompenza autoaffermativa di molti uomini di scienza ha in seguito obliterato: pur mettendo all'opera tutta la forza conoscitiva dell'importantissimo principio di indeterminazione (1927) a cui Heisenberg ha legato il suo nome - principio secondo il quale è impossibile determinare simultaneamente con precisione assoluta i valori di due grandezze fisiche coniugate, come posizione e velocità di una particella -, egli qui fa spazio, e rende merito, al suo maestro danese Niels Bohr. Ed è infatti un po' dello "spirito di Copenhagen" che si continua a respirare in questo capolavoro della saggistica scientifica. Lo spirito ineguagliabile che negli anni venti del Novecento, affinando il formalismo matematico della teoria quantistica, "ha indirizzato l'intero sviluppo della nuova fisica atomica".
