Meehan 1826-1901 was a noted botanist of his day. While he wrote a number of serious scholarly works on the subject this book was an attempt to reach a wider more popular audience. Meehan goal for this work was to improve popular comprehension of the subject without sacrificing good science and by the way at a price people could afford. The concept of bringing more sophisticated botanical knowledge to a wider audience was rare. However Meehan received a lot of critical success for this effort at that time Nissen Botany 1331.
