15945Bourges, 1787. With 11 tables. 3 volumes. (12), 19, 345, (10) pp.; (4), 287, (12) pp.; (2), 48, 262 pp. 4to. Modern half morocco. Lavergne, Assemblées provinciales, pp. 33-66. Complete set of the best edition with subject indexes, of the proceedings of the very first Assemblée Provinciale, as planned by Turgot and created by Necker. The distinction between the three orders was practically neglected and the voting was by call. This Assemblée was, together with the one of Haute-Guienne, the only one to survive until the revolution. During the years of its existence, the Assemblée made important decisions: the corvée was abolished and in this respect Berri became the example for all other provinces; improvement of waterways, extensively dealt with in the proceedings, was promoted because of the high costs of transport by land; the new doctrine of Turgot of 'liberté du travail' was adopted. Important document as the Berry was a sort of experiment for the future provincial assemblies. In these minutes one finds essais on agriculture, industry, various taxes in use, the Ponts et Chaussees, the future construction of the canal and its navigation. - Rare in this complete state. The first two volumes with the half-title: 'Collection des procès-verbaux de l'Assemblée provinciale du Berri'.
17274A Paris, 1618. With title-engraving depicting hanging speculators and usurers, the usurers also being chased while throwing away money. Title printed in red and black. (14), 96 pp. Small 4to. Later speckled calf, gilt triple fillets on sides, spine gilt in compartments, green label with gilt lettering. Goldsmiths 470; Lindsay & Neu 4039 (other issue); Welsh, Second Checklist, 609 (edition of (8), 85 pp); Bourgeois & André 2440; not in Kress; not in Einaudi; not in Mattioli; not in INED. First edition. In the same year also an edition in 8vo was published, this 4to edition being very rare. The author wrote several works of a vehement nature, against the financiers and provoked lively polemics. He demands the re-establishment of the Chambre de Justice which had been created under Henry IV. Three years earlier Jean de Beaufort had already insisted on investigations against financial malversations in his Trésor des trésors. - Unobtrusive brown spot (erasing previous owners name ?) on title-page.
Prior owner's name, "Edw. D. Jones" written atop title page - possibly the founder of Edward Jones Investments, founded in St. Louis in 1922. Prior owner's small initials (E.D.J.) and date inked atop first blank leaf. pp. [v], vi-xlv, [2], 2-431. Index. Translated from the German. "While it would be bold to affirm that Professor Böhm-Bawerk [1851-1914] has said the last word on the theory of Interest, his book must be regarded as one with which all subsequent writers will have to reckon." - Translator's Preface. Of the first edition, at p.22 Batson wrote "The first large treatise produced by the Austrian School, and although it is not so comprehensive as that since published by Wieser, it leaves very few parts of economic theory unillumined." Schumpeter "regarded Böhm-Bawerk as one of the 'great masters' in economics." - Swedberg p.14. Moderate wear to publisher's pebbled brown cloth. Bright gilt lettering upon backstrip. Binding intact. 22.6 x 15cm. Batson p.167, Cohen 171, Masui p.151, Fundaburk 9663. Book
27189In Venetia, (colophon: Iacobo Sansovino il Giovane, 1570), 1571. Vignette to title page, decorative woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces. [4], 86, [2], 14 leaves. 4to. Contemporary limp vellum, ties gone, spine lettered in manuscript. Adams C.1178; DBI XXII, p. 611; BMSTC Italian, p. 162; Cosenza 951; rare, NUC and RLIN record just two copies, (DLC, NsyU). First edition, rare, of this important treatise on political theory, a blueprint for constitutional reform by the Florentine diplomat and government official Bartolomeo Cavalcanti (1503-1562). Because of political differences with the Florentine government and the Medici, Cavalcanti went into voluntary exile, was in the employment of Pope Paolo III, and Henri II of France, and especially in the liberal republic of Ferrara. Cavalcanti was much praised for his theoretical writing and his political acumen, but also for his publications on rhetoric and political theory. His work was published posthumously and edited by Sebastiano Erizzo (1525-85), whose own brief treatise on civil government, here published for the first time, is bound at the end, the last 14 leaves, and which is almost always lacking, entitled: Discorso de I Governi Civili di M. Sebastiano Erizzo, gentilhuomo Venetiano. A M. Girolamo Veniero.Starting with Plato's Republic and Aristotle's Politics, Cavalcanti develops a remarkable and far-reaching analysis of the workings of the city republic, published in a democratic spirit in Venice. The treatise is of particular interest because Cavalcanti incorporates a discussion of the economic situation and workings of public administration. Cavalcanti concurs with Aristotle that the ultimate purpose of the city state is the well-being of all citizens, and the ideal form of government would be democracy. He maintains that a healthy economy is one of the prerequisites of a functioning city state. The far-reaching importance of Cavalcanti's treatise can be seen in the fact that it was reprinted a number of times, first in 1591, but then again in 1805 and in 1852. - Some mild browning, stronger on leaves 9-11, prelims and first 5 leaves with a small inkspot in lower blank margin, but in all a good copy.

"In this classic about economics, freedom, and the relationship between the two, Nobel laureate and presidential advisor Milton Friedman and his wife Rose explain how our freedom has been eroded and our prosperity undermined through the explosion of laws, regulations, agencies, and spending in Washington, and how good intentions often produce deplorable results when government is the middleman. "I am concerned only with telling the facts having to do with the moral physical and mental disintegration of our nation. I show some of the tricks employed by the Financial interests to dazzle you and your family." - page 9. On page 65 the author paraphrases Mayer Rothschild by saying "Allow me to write and control what people shall read and hear and I will make a nation of nit-wits and slaves or a nation of intelligent and free people." Adding "If finance were a simple problem people would understand it; but for that reason it is kept a very complicated process full of mystery using jargon to make it appear very intricate and capable of being understood only by the master criminals who have the world in their hands and are using interest as their only weapon." "The author has been in the homes of many millionaires thousands of homes of the middle class and slum areas. He is familiar with the criminal element and has been engaged in human research and rehabilitation work. Until the panic came into evidence he was very successful in his own business of real estate together with an understanding of law and banking." - page 7. 1972512j1461Don Mills Ontario: Longman Canada Limited. Very Good in Fair dust jacket. 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. 0151878307 . Signed without inscription by Marshall McLuhan and Barrington Nevitt atop half-title page. "Marshall McLuhan is probably the most original theorist of the postindustrial world. No other contemporary social critic can match the daring of his imagination the sheer profusion and richness of his insights. He has been called 'the oracle of the electric age' and 'the sage of Aquarius'. Here he argues that the old natural order has been scrapped made obsolete by electric communications and satellites. To this end the executive will have to drop out of his/her old organizational structures whether these are in business the military the church the universities or government. Using brilliant aphorisms striking illuminations puns and probes the authors show how Nature must now be recreated as an art form." - dust jacket. "Written like a modern day internet blog which is exceptional considering the 1972 publishing date. A key takeaway is that with the introduction of each new technology there is a change in the 'rim spin' of the Earth in terms of information and networking. This prescient book is highly recommended for anyone looking to expand their mind especially for those developing a social or business philosophy." - Daniel R. Libby. Clean bright tight and unmarked with very light wear to original salmon cloth. Above-average wear to dust jacket now in glossy new archival-grade protection. Laid-in is a comprehensive review of this work by Arnold Edinborough which we believe appeared in Toronto's Globe & Mail newspaper. Paper over inner hinges of volume I split, not affecting binding which remains firm and tight; some annotations in light coloured pencil in one volume. In about fine condition. A very handsome set. ~ Adam Smith's (1723-1790) work is the first major expression of organized study of social wealth. "'The Wealth of Nations' is not a system, but as a provisional analysis it is completely convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought." (PMM 221). The present, much admired French translation of Smith's "Wealth of Nations", by the French poet and economist Comte Germain Garnier (1754-1821), became the standard, definitive French text. (Palgrave 1894-1901). Garnier's elegant Preface to this edition contains a summary of the doctrine of Smith, a comparison between the same and that of French economists, and a parallel between the wealth of France and that of England. ~ The present set is the scarce corrected issue, published without the 5 errata slips (one to each volume) and conforms to Einaudi's 5340 description.
