A substantial early 20th-century business ledger documenting the operations of the E. E. Dickinson Company one of the most prominent American producers of witch hazel extract during a period of established national distribution. Entries record "Cash Received" and "Cash Paid" detailing transactions with druggists wholesalers and regional firms with columns for freight discounts and credit structures offering a clear view of the firm's commercial network and accounting practices.<br />Founded in 1875 by Edward E. Dickinson Sr. building on earlier developments by the Rev. Thomas N. 1955441j1375London: Victor Gollancz Ltd. 1955. First British Edition. Hardcover. "The authors were convinced that the decision to withhold from Dr. Oppenheimer one of America's most distinguished scientists the security clearance which would enable him to continue as chief adviser to the Government on scientific matters was a miscarriage of justice as unworthy of the fine traditions of the American past as the trial of Captain Dreyfus was unworthy of France. First edition of this scarce book which, although suggesting to be an account of a voyage to South America, is actually a work of fiction. Durret himself claims that it was based on an account by the "Sieur Bachelier" to which he only added notes and of which improved the style. This however is not correct, the work is by Durret. "Chapter 17 of the first part and chapter 19 contain descriptions of Santa Catharina and Brazil in general. The letter is signed "Durret," but the account is by Bachelier, a surgeon. Father Labat believes this was an imaginary voyage" (Borba de Moreas, i, p. 281)."Récit, selon Barbier, plein de bévues et de contradictions, car D. l'aurait fait sans sortir de chez lui. No eighteenth-century French attack upon luxury exceeded in comprehensiveness that of the Abbé Pluquet. (.....) In volume I the author delineated the evil effects of luxury upon man as an individual, and upon his arts and morals; in volume II he showed, through analysis and through appeal to history, how luxury undermined collective political and social life and destroyed states, and how luxury might be extinguished. Pluquet, who was greatly influenced by Cantillon and Petty, was familiar with both Graeco-Roman views on luxury and those of his contemporaries. Among the defenders of luxury whose views he criticized are Mandeville, Melon, Montesquieu, Hume, Condillac, d'Holbach and others' (Spengler, French Predecessors of Malthus, chapter iv, section viii, with an elaborate analysis of Pluquet's work). - Verso of both title-pages with a black inkspot, which comes through and affects the address, apart from this a good copy.
27239Venezia, Tipografia di Antonio Curti, Presso Giustino Pasquali Q. Mario, 1797. Two works bound in one volume. viii, 207, (1) blank pp.; 68 pp. 8vo. Modern blue cloth, red label with gilt lettering to spine. First work: Sénelier 721; Dufour 169; this edition not found in RLIN or OCLC. First Italian edition of this translation, the first Italian translation (1796) was published outside Italy, in Paris. 'His fundamental thesis that government depends absolutely on the mandate of the people, and his genuine creative insight into a number of political and economic problems, gives his work an indisputable cogency. It had the most profound influence on the political thinking of the generation following its publication. It was, after all, the first great emotional plea for the equality of men in the state; others had argued that same cause theoretically but, had themselves tolerated a very different government ... it remains the crucial document of egalitarian government' (PMM).Second work: Sénelier 1470; OCLC lists copies at McGill and the Wellcome Library.First edition in Italian of Rousseau's important contribution to economics.Rousseau's article on political economy, originally written for publication in the Encyclopédie, remained his most explicit contribution to the subject. His sustained argument against luxury and conspicuous consumption of the rising European bourgeoisie implied a direct criticism and rejection of the mercantilists. His article, published well before any of the published statements of the Physiocrats, shows similarities or anticipates the physiocratic school in important issues of property and to some extent on taxation (He also cites China as an example). His Lockean discussion of the right of property and his treatment of taxation are of particular interest. Taxation is 'inevitable', and he suggests a tax on consumption, paid for by the buyer of non-essential items or services, foreshadowing modern VAT. Most importantly his single-minded opposition to economic inequality and his insistence that liberal laissez-faire was no substitute for a theory of social relations, influenced political reformers and political economists alike. Both works were translated by the Italian Niccolò Rota. - Old handwritten name on first title, light stain in upper inner margin of the first work, an uncut copy.

"National bank notes retired - legal tenders the only paper money - prosperity for every industry." - subtitle. "This little work makes no pretensions to literary merit. It was written, by the author, at intervals snatched from his other occupations as a farmer... The leading facts stated, and the great and fundamental truths of the science of money enunciated, are in accordance with the true principles of Political Economy when applied to the present conditions of America, and are believed to be sound and incontrovertible." - from Preface. Contains the following five essays: As long as America is so heavily indebted to European Nations it will be impossible to have a good and uniform currency upon a gold basis; Specie-based currency with the shackles of gold redemption and the national bank system are anti-republican and dangerous to human liberty; A second system of paper money freed from the shackles of specie redemption and based upon the faith of the nation; How contraction and gold redemption will affect the debtors and tax-payers; Industry and productions stimulated by a greater volume of currency. 231 pages. History certainly does repeat itself as the following statement appears upon the title page: "Equity and justice demand that the merchant, manufacturer, farmer, and wage-earner shall receive as much consideration at the hands of the law-makers as is accorded to those who deal in money." Clearly, the author would not be a fan of Goldman Sachs and their modern-day ilk. First Edition in English, small 4to, typographical device on title, title recto [A], verso blank, [2], 41, [1] pp., modern half calf, a good copy. "The political satire against the Duc des Luynes, according to Barbier, was the cause of the author's imprisonment in the Bastille where he died. The bibliography of the early French editions, as in the case of the more celebrated Menippean satire, does not appear to have been studied so that it would be difficult to say with just what celerity it was translated and published in English. However, the fact that it was translated is not necessarily an indication of the concern of Jacobean England with the internal affairs of France. Although this translation may have been in part intended as a commentary upon Buckingham and other 'favourites' of the King's Council, it was probably published principally because of its intrinsic wit and vigor." - Pforzheimer Library.
