6 yearly issues, (1799, 8pp; 1800, 8pp; 1801, 8pp; 1802, 8pp; 1806, 12pp; 1808, 12pp.), stitched as issued, browning and spotting as a result of the rather poor quality paper, corners worn with some loss but not to text, one or two small tears (the 1802 issue rather more so). By their very nature, these ephemeral almanacs are very rare; they were intended for issue within the year of printing and then to be thrown away. Printed on poor quality paper, they are susceptible to browning and general wear as is the case with these. Contents include: Geographical description of the world; dimensions of Scotland, England, and Ireland; a very useful table for calculating servants' wages, etc.
18142A Genève, 1777. (4), (2, Avis au Lecteur, blank), vii, (1, blank), 316, (4, errata) pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments, label with gilt lettering, marbled edges. INED 2037 (later edition); not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi; not in Mattioli; Mornet, Les origines intellectuelles de la Révolution, pp. 217-8. Rare first edition of this work which is primarily a defence of monarchic government against the theories of Montesquieu and Mably, notable for a variety of observations on economic issues. Gin identifies the products of agriculture and manufacture as the basic forms of wealth, and condemns import on the grounds that they lead to a diminution in the population. 'Il y défend les lois fondamentales de la monarchie pure, réfute la théorie de la liberté politique ou de constitution de Montesquieu, celle de l'équilibre des pouvoirs et refuse de donner des limites à la puissance du monarque' (Mornet). 'Sociologie politique. De la monarchie, en général, et du gouvernement français en particulier. Plusieurs passages consacrés à des questions économiques. Réflexions sur les impôts et sur les richesses en général' (INED). - Some annotations concerning author and book on verso front free blank. A very nice copy with good margins, and an interesting copy: after the title-page there is a "Avis au Lecteur", reading: "Ce livre n'ayant pas ete imprime sous les yeux de l'Auteur, il s'y est glissé plusieurs fautes typographiques. On a corrigé les plus importantes dans l'Errata qui est à la fin de cet Ouvrage." Both this "avis" and the errata are almost always lacking in copies usually found, the errors in those copies not being corrected.
18497A Genève, et se trouve à Paris, Chez tous les Libraires qui vendent les Nouveautés, 1780. With engraved frontispiece. (4), xxiv, 427, (1) pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments with red label and gilt lettering, a beautiful copy. INED 2037 (1782 edition); not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi; not in Mattioli; Mornet, Les origines intellectuelles de la Révolution, pp. 217-8. Rare second edition, as the first not to be found in any of the reference works. The present work, which is primarily a defence of monarchic government against the theories of Montesquieu and Mably, is notable for a variety of observations on economic issues. Gin identifies the products of agriculture and manufacture as the basic forms of wealth, and condemns import on the grounds that they lead to a diminution in the population. 'Sociologie politique. 10252A Amsterdam, Aux depens de la Compagnie, 1759. Title printed in red and black. viii, 296 pp. 8vo. Contemporary blind marbled covers, paper shelf number to spine, uncut. Kress 5781; Goldsmiths 9441; Einaudi 2671; Mattioli 1484; Higgs 1978; INED 2119; Conlon 59:827; Spengler, French Predecessors of Malthus, pp. 86-90. First edition. The copies catalogued in Kress and Higgs have 535 pages and the title ends after the words 'Commerce général', lacking the additon 'du Royaume'. No priority has been established, either of these editions is very rare. The author, one of the editors of the Journal Économique, philantropist and utopian socialist, proposes in this work to 'faire entrer tous les moyens de mettre en exécution les projets les plus grands pour le bonheur de la nation': the founding of a state-owned agricultural company for the sale of its products with the purpose of maintaining price stability, the foundation of 'sociétiés de crédit', development of the use of machines, etc. The whole of his socialist and utopian ideas is also elaborately dealt with in J.-C. Perrot's work 'Histoire intellectuelle de l'Économie Politique', chapter entitled Le despotisme de la raison dans l'utopie économique de Goyon de la Plombanie, pp. 284-304. See also A. Lichtenberger, Le Socialisme au XVIIIe siècle, pp. 329-334. - Occasional faint dampstain, a very good copy.

First work: INED 3360; Conlon 73:1090; Kress 6958; Goldsmiths 10954; Higgs 5713; not in Einaudi. First edition. 'It has been noted that Necker retired from active direction of his bank in 1772. From that date his goal was evidently a career in the government. The appearance a year later of his Eloge de Colbert was widely recognized as his bid for the post of finance minister, as well as his reform program if appointed. He entered the book in competition for the prize of eloquence annually offered by the Académie française. The Academy conferred the prize on the Eloge de Colbert after it was read to them by d'Alembert in August 1773. (.....) the Eloge de Colbert is an important document in Necker's political and ministerial career. It provides an introduction to the themes he was to expound later. It also indicates the nature of his ambition, for he unveiled himself in it' (Robert D. Harris, Necker. 17067A Amsterdam, aux dépens de la Compagnie, 1725. Titles printed in red and black, sphere on title. 12 volumes. 12mo. Contemporary polished calf, spines gilt with raised bands, labels with gilt lettering, some spines slightly worn at top or foot, red sprinkled edges. Cf.: INED 4259; this edition not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths. Sully's influence was widespread; he encouraged agriculture, urged free circulation of produce, promoted stock raising, planned a system of canals and forbade the destruction of the forests. He strengthened the French military establishment, promoting the construction of great lines of defences on the frontiers. He represented Henry at the Court of King James I, arranged Henry's marriage to Marie De Medicis, and helped to put down several revolts by the nobility. Sully's political power and influence ended with assassination of Henry IV in 1620. While he was unpopular with his colleagues, he nonetheless exhibited a gifted executive ability throughout his career as well as an unbending loyalty to the King. Sully was largely responsible for the transformation in France between 1598-1610, when agriculture and commerce improved, and foreign peace and internal order were maintained. These memoirs are very valuable for the history of the time, as an autobiography of Sully and as a record of his remarkable career.Schumpeter: 'Maximilien de Béthune, created Duke de Sully by Henry IV, the latter's minister of finance, was a much greater, and especially stronger man than was the most famous of his successors, Colbert. He reformed the fiscal system of France most succesfully and saw much beyond the range of what he actually accomplished. Moreover, he knew - which is the criterion of greatness in a fiscal administrator - how to make fiscal policy an element and tool of general economic policy.' - Handwritten old name and date in blank portion of title.

"A fascinating exploration of four great inflationary eras of tumult - why they arose - who caused them - how family fortunes survived or were destroyed... What happens when hyperinflation sweeps across an entire society? Whom does it threaten most and whom does it benefit? And when, finally, the authorities act - why do the politicians and the bureaucrats invariably delay until after the value of an entire currency has been totally destroyed?" - dust jacket. 308 pages. Index. Book clean and unmarked with light wear. Above-average wear to dust jacket which bears tape repairs and has had some portions peeled from its front panel and colored/written in. "During the last generation, American readers of German appear to have relied, as a rule, for information about early phases of German economic thought, chiefly upon two writers, Kautz ("Die Geschichtliche Entwickelung der National-Oekonomik und ihrer Literatur") and Roscher. Of Kautz, it is enough to say that he was of the rear guard of the rhetoricians. His book is wonderfully plausible, if not lucid, reading. Its early pages appear to express methodological conclusions which the maturest scholarship has not superseded." - Albion W. Small, "The Cameralists: The Pioneers of German Social Polity" (1909). 1875313c5065Kansas City MO: Ramsey Millett & Hudson 1875. Book. Fair. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. "National bank notes retired - legal tenders the only paper money - prosperity for every industry." - subtitle. "This little work makes no pretensions to literary merit. It was written by the author at intervals snatched from his other occupations as a farmer. The leading facts stated and the great and fundamental truths of the science of money enunciated are in accordance with the true principles of Political Economy when applied to the present conditions of America and are believed to be sound and incontrovertible." - from Preface. Contains the following five essays: As long as America is so heavily indebted to European Nations it will be impossible to have a good and uniform currency upon a gold basis; Specie-based currency with the shackles of gold redemption and the national bank system are anti-republican and dangerous to human liberty; A second system of paper money freed from the shackles of specie redemption and based upon the faith of the nation; How contraction and gold redemption will affect the debtors and tax-payers; Industry and productions stimulated by a greater volume of currency. Usual library markings. Spine Slant. Above-average wear. Binding intact. Gilt lettering mostly worn from backstrip but clearly legible upon blue front board. Upper portions of almost all pages lightly stained yellow - all text remains clearly legible. Ramsey, Millett & Hudson Hardcover
