Album opens right to left. 6.9 x 9.75 in. Album cover is dated "March of the 15th year of the Showa Dynasty" in Japanese. 7 photographs measuring 4.5 x 6 in. Each class photo includes names of sitters printed on rice paper in Japanese. <br/><br/>Of note in the 6 class photographs of school children and faculty are the mix of men and women as teachers and the mix of girls and boys as students. In the first image of the entire school boys and girls are lined up next to each other although they stand in rows of their own single-gender classes. Two class photos have additional small portraits of students who were absent for picture day. In Japan at this time education was not compulsory beyond primary school but childhood was regarded as an important time to foster learning growth and intellectual curiosity for both boys and girls. Original paper wraps. 15 x 11 inches. 80 pages. Large color image of fall foliage on front cover. Originally belonged to Marjorie O. Walker of Woodridge NY. Includes rich material from Oswego College as well as items from the schools in New York where Ms. Walker was employed following graduation. Many newspaper clippings and other items are related to WWII and its effects on students. Article from LIFE Magazine dated Aug 21 1944 about "Refugees Arrive From Europe" with 16 photo-illustrated images of Jewish refugees at a facility at Fort Ontario in Oswego. Another 1944 clipping: "Training makes Aviation Group Physically Fit. the men who have gone from Oswego to the classification centers have been outstanding in physical activities. The Air Corps program as carried out in the college training centers develops physical fitness strength and eagerness for combat." She cared deeply for her students as shown in a 1947 correspondence with the Junior American Red Cross in support of a program for her high school students. <br/><br/>The State University of New York at Oswego was founded in 1861 as the Oswego Primary Teachers' Training School; this institution embraced and popularized some of the most innovative teaching methods of the day. The school led the Oswego Movement of educational reform in the United States which sought to emphasize that every aspect of the child's life contributed to the formation of their personality character and capacity to reason. These educational methods were child-centered and based on individual differences sense perception and the student's self-activity. In 1942 the New York state legislation elevated Oswego from a Normal School to the 4-year bachelor's degree-granting Oswego State Teachers College. In 1948 Oswego became one of the State University of New York's charter members. To meet the expanded need for specialized instruction the institution broadened its academic perspective to become a full-fledged arts and sciences institution in the SUNY system and featuring a range of liberal and professional studies by 1962. An uncommon early pair of views of the Second Ladies' Boarding House at Oberlin College in the 1860s taken at a time when Oberlin was one of few coeducational colleges having first admitted women in 1837. Oberlin's Second Ladies Hall was built in 1861-1863 and featured Itlianate architecture and a rooftop balcony. The building was opened for student accommodations in 1865. The first floor held an assembly room a reading room a dining room parlors and stewards' quarters. The second and third floors housed 100 women. 16391Girls' Education Original vintage cross-stitch sampler. Limington Maine. 1834. 11.5" x 15" in. Alphabet cross-stitched in capital and lower case letters with decorative embroidered border and information on maker stitched at bottom: "Elizabeth G. Brackett Limington Maine. Aged 10. in 1834". Samplers were valuable parts of girls' education from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries as it demonstrated both their skill in needlepoint and their achievements in literacy. From the 1800s the very first schools and academies for young women in America had their students create needlepoint pieces with decorative motifs such as verses or the entire alphabet being stitched on the sampler. The parents of these young women proudly displayed their embroideries as showpieces of their daughter's talent and status. In recent years these samplers have become important in museum collections as representations of early American female education. Capital alphabet "&" and numbers 1 through 7 in black thread. Identified as Margravine of Anspach.<br/><br/>She writes in her hand in Part: "I send you Miss Isabella Berkeley the youngest of the young Ladies-Elizabeth will be very little at your house-as she becomes companionable and I shall always have her with me when I can-Isabella has some natural faults which would be rooted in this house-and which nothing but abiding with young women submitting to those who educate them can cure her of-she is inclined to be a very fine lady-curious and what I call fidgety--.she has a good heart and she is laborious liking to be employed-works well at her needle-is charitable humane-I wish her to be made read loud for half an hour every day-to teach her to articulate in speaking-she was a very sickly child-and must eat very little butter-no wine-no coffee.<br/>And in postscript "I would wish her to read religious or moral books-and abridgement of History in general. <br/><br/>Afterwards when the general chronology is placed in her memory-she will read the History of every different country with measure. Original boards. 214 pages. Unpaginated. First 30 pages of notebook were later repurposed to record Deaths and Marriage notices clipped from newspapers for friends and family from 1879-1884. Handwritten label on front cover "Deaths and Marriages". Original owner name written inside front cover "Laura E. Healy Room No. 2 Point Street Grammar School September 6th 1876." Book is filled with handwritten math problems and their solutions. Some of them are challenging practical situations while others are more straightforward. "In an orchard ¾ of the trees are apple trees 1/10 peach trees and the remainder Pear trees which are 20 more than ⅛ of the whole. How many trees in the orchard" "How many rolls of paper 9 yards long and 1 ½ ft wide are required to cover 4 sides of a room 18 ft x 16 ft and 9 ft high. Deducting 8 feet off for windows and doors." "Bought a shawl for $18. How shall I mark it so that I may make a dis. of 10% and yet sell for $18". "Divide 6 ⅓ by 9 ½." "Divide 427 by 833 and the quotient by 7/10." "What is the interest of $567 from Jan. 7 1870 to July 27 1872 at 9%" Includes a loose handwritten note in child's hand addressed to Miss L.H. between her and a friend: "You be the gal which I adore Your beauty none surpasses I guess by gosh I love you more than buckwheat cakes & 'lasses". Poetry of friendship addressed to the owner: "Eliza thou hast vex'd me quite; for oh! that pen and ink! How couldst thou ask me for to write Til not my meat and drink-May be that I am half posess'd! But saying as I think The art of writing I detest-Confound the pen and ink!- I must not write I hate to write I cannot-will not-what! O! Yes sweet Miss For one sweet Kiss I'll write without one blot." Friendship albums were popular at this time amongst young women particularly those finishing their time at a female academy and preparing to leave their school friends. Also includes poetry "On Happiness and Contentment" "On the Beauties of Nature" "On the Mind" "On Man." The first entry is a handwritten essay "On Woman" that details the many benefits of women's influence on men. "Of all the manifold blessings bestowed upon man by his omniscient Creator tending to alleviate the miseries destined for him to undergo during his probationary existence here and the better to prepare him for eternal happiness hereafter none can be more highly estimable than those derived from the society of woman. By her genial influence the heart of man naturally prone to yield to the dictates of error is almost imperceptibly led into the paths of refinement where real pleasures only can exist and participates with her in the purer and more delightful affections fo the soul." Ann Ullman Hirsch 1929 - 2017 had formal musical training and education at Juilliard and NYU; she was a passionate musician music educator and administrator. In a career spanning more than 60 years she was well known on Long Island for her extensive musical contributions including founding the Eastern Suffolk School of Music in Riverhead in 1977 and serving as its executive director for 10 years. Pianist and violinist she was a valued member of the L.I. Sound Symphony and was a private piano instructor to children and adults. Named East End Woman of Year in Education East End Magazine Suffolk County NY 1979 and honored by Peconic Bay Zonta at a Celebration of Women in 2013. from her obituary in 27 East and several online sources Collection includes: 1975 A 68-page typed manuscript with 2 annotated working draft copies of "A Basic Guide for the Teaching of Piano" by Ann U. Hirsch. These include tipped-on photographs of students' correct form along with the teaching exercises in the text & with extra image-sheets and 35mm photographic negatives laid-in. One of the drafts has extensive marginal notation. All are accomplished one-side either on quality typing bond paper of the time or copies. The original set is a group of loose sheets; working drafts are in 3-ring binders. Ms. Hirsch' introduction explains her purpose since according to her research - "There are also many fine books both long and short written by great pianists that suggest technical and artistic approaches for the advanced and professional performers but my purpose is hopefully to have written something for those who work primarily with beginners. I have tried to make it personal and informal while at the same time offer specific advice in the areas I consider most crucial. My hope is that if this book were to be published it could be made inexpensively in pocket book size and thus be available on counters in music stores as well as in colleges for all those who study piano and expect to teach it too" With 3 typed original letters from Ms. Hirsch to the music publishers Theodore Presser Co. Sterling Publishing Co. and Prentis Hall Publications all describing the content and asking in similar fashion to consider her book for publication. Included here are these three publishers' rejection-replies & another letter from Dover publishing which also rejected her project for various reasons. There is also a handwritten request from Ms. Hirsch soliciting the opinion of a professional editor-writer whom she thought may be able to help put her book into proper form for publication. A run of 26 piano recital programs given in 1987 - 2013 by the students of Ann U. Hirsch; given in various private homes on Long Island. Most approx. 7" x 8 ½" size; single folded sheets with four printed sides. 1980-1984 Approx. 30 one or two page programs for the ESSM concerts student recitals often given monthly and a few other miscellaneous programs sponsored by ESSM in the Riverhead NY area: Jazz concerts percussion events concerts by faculty & guests student presentations. With personnel players pieces performed. 1986 A file folder with approx. 30 typed pages of material some on ESSM letterhead. These papers recount the struggle apparently of several months duration of the music school's attempts to restructure the board of directors and executive functions find adequate and sustainable financing and address critical accounting insurance liability and staffing issues which threatened the institution's continued existence. Some of the letters reveal troubling circumstances and finally include the resignation of Ms. Hirsch as the school's executive director and her choice of ceasing any further activities associated with the school including teaching. Other letters document and list various complaints needed changes salary & staffing requirements involving Ms. Hirsch board members and others who were involved in the running of the school. Miscellaneous: A three-ring binder with thumb-guide sections with some dozens of pages; this was Ms. Hirsch' own personal teaching and performance log: Students; Billing; Music; Musicians & Schedule. These sections have handwritten entries lists of student names addresses phone numbers; billing schedule and names columned with payments & various billing tiers. The "Music" section gives student names pieces planning for programs teaching notes; "Musicians" section with names phone numbers musical instruments & often the location of a large group of varied musical talents. Diagram highlights 3 major plot points: The Reward The Substitute and The Theft. Hand-drawn chart of rising action for Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. Includes original essays on "Character Sketch of Portia" and "The Treatment of the Jews". "Antonia was a rich merchant in Venice. He owned several large ships which would sail to other countries and procured cargo of spices and other merchandise. Shylock the Jew as a wealthy Jew but all he had was money and jewels.
