Bradbound brown boards patterned for leather effect "Album" stamped in gilt on cover. Modest rubbing to the front hinge and slight bumping at the corners. 164 glossy-finish snapshot photographs of the female college students and their life at Cornwall in a variety of sizes including 3.5" x 5.5" 2.5" x 4.5" 3.5" x 2.5" inches both black and white and sepia. Most are captioned in white ink. Slight warp to some photographs from being pasted to the pages and occasion residue from fingerprints. Beautiful impressionistic portraits of the life of these hopeful young teachers in Cornwall. In addition to the many vivid photos of the teachers going for outings and picnicks "Help yourself to the cream" and lively portraits "the long and short of it" under a photograph of a tall young woman smiling ruefully there are photographs of the ancient city of Cornwall which carry a beautiful spectral quality. <br/><br/>In the 1920s teaching was one of the only pursuits available to women who wanted economic enfranchisement outside of waged domestic service. However there were many restrictions placed on female teachers; The women we see smiling in these photos although choosing liberation in one sense also faced much personal sacrifice. These women had to live morally exemplary lives by the rigorous contemporary standards since they were entrusted to raise the youth. Additionally until 1944 in the UK no married women were allowed to work as teachers. If a woman teacher married she had to resign from her job; if she was already married she was sacked. Some women found a way around the marriage bars by marrying in secret and then living apart from their husband or by having a very long engagement. Most female teachers however remained single in a time when marriage and motherhood signified adult female identity. The tensions between two identities-- that of the professional teacher and that of the feminine woman-- coupled with the influence of the suffrage movement and systematic unfair treatment in the teacher's unions led to teachers becoming some of the most ardent feminists of the movement. unknown books

Album includes time she was at school with images of classmates around school buildings. 138 photographs of various size approximately 1 x 1" to 3.5 x 2.5". Photos are dated from 1919-1926. Original black textured cloth boards. 8.25 x 11". "Photographs" gilt on front cover. 100 pages. Hand lettered on first page: "Marion Tye / Devereux / GA". Images of young women at leisure between classes. One page labelled "Roomies / Terrell Annex - Room 211" has photos of friends captioned "A Queen of hearts" "Flossie" "The Black Sheep" and "My Gurls." Page 7 features small cutouts of women's portraits arranged in a "23" configuration likely containing images of all members of the class of 1923. Georgia State College for Women was founded in 1889 as the Georgia Normal & Industrial College as a women's institute; and in 1917 it was authorized to grant 4-year degrees to women pursuing teaching degrees. It is now Georgia College recognized as one of the best undergraduate teaching programs in the US South. The remaining pages are filled with memories of friends and family. Some include interesting trips from nearby locations such as Lake Junaluska North Carolina and "Mt. City" Mountain City GA. A photo of 8 young men wear "Landa Park" tanks. One photo of a man playing saxophone with caption "Alabamy Bound." Many of the remaining photos are of young children. Consist of 23 original Gelatin silver print black and white photos. 3 x 4 ¼ inches. c. 1940s-1950. Images show students at work in blood banks in labs studying and relaxing between classes. Includes photos of school buildings such a the Medical School entrance in addition to several instructors. Some include handwritten captions giving a little more information such as a picture of the "Class of 1950" with 8 women and 1 man identified: "Bev Helen Belle Monkey Noni Ann Betty Joann Bill". Other captions include names of doctors instructors fellow students and the type of work being done in images such as "Bev - vaccine" and "Beth Bueliner - Blood Bank". Other photos identify the subject as the Media Lab Chemistry Lab working with EKG and studying Hematology blood. Students outside of medical school entrance. Photos of a quick break grabbing a coffee and snack of animal crackers.<br/><br/>Although women had participated in the informal practice of medicine for hundreds of years there were relatively few women studying medicine in the United States at this time. By 1900 only about a dozen medical schools had opened to coeducation and female graduates often found themselves unable to access training hospitals and professional associations. The trailblazing young women in these photos whom we see performing experiments and examining patients bucked the trend of their generation to become doctors. Early images of women in medicine are very rare and a fine addition to a collection. Very good condition. unknown books

Dedicated on first page "To my dear Father and Mother from their ever loving daughter Mary". 7 x 4.5 in. Original quarter black morocco boards. 158 Handwritten pages. Gilt detail to cover and "Rose" on spine. A remarkable original novel written by a young girl at a time when formal education was not common for girls. This story reveals an educated mind in both the realms of writing and is history as this novel is set in medieval England. "The sunny month of July had come and Edward had begun his troubled reign. A short period of quiet had begun in which the people were to enjoy a rest before fresh trouble and bloodshed should begin. The fields were filled with waving grain and the woods were fresh and green round the old castle of Dunkirk." Page 155. Light toning. Writing on some pages has faded but still legible. Very good condition.<br/><br/>The novel takes place in medieval England. "The setting sun was sending a flood of light over the hills and distant mountains and over the old castle of Dunkirk making the river Wharfe shine like gold when a little boat shot swiftly out of a turn in the river and came towards the castle. There were two men in it the older man was seated at the stern wrapt in a long dark cloak and having his hap pulled over his face so that only a pair of dark twinkling gray eyes showed below it" page 1.<br/><br/>One of the protagonists is a beautiful teenager about the same age as the author along with a cast of other characters including Lords and Dukes. "She was a most lovely girl. A quantity of dark brown hair that curled around a neck and face of most lovely form and complexion and a mouth of beautiful expression helped to form a face both sweet and lively But the most striking feature was a pair of almost black eyes fringed with long dark lashes. They were full of expression sometimes merry with laughter and again deep and thoughtful. Rose Murray was about seventeen years old at this time she was niece of the Lord of Dunkirk and having hardly any relations except him had always lived with him. Ever since she could remember those old towers had protected and sheltered her" page 8. "Rollin entered a large hall with a huge staircase on one side. Going up the stairs he passed into a passage and after numerous turning and ups and downs he opened a great door and passed into a good sized room. In the middle of this was a round table and on it were papers and books. At one end of the room was a recess with a window with a broad window slit. There was a little shelf on which were a few written books and writing materials.As Rollin entered a gentleman with a paper in his hands look up from his writing and smiling said 'Well Rollin have you had a pleasant time at London and what have you learned while you were gone of the queen's intentions and of what the Duke of York is going to do'" page 5-6.<br/><br/>The tale has adventure suspense and a happy ending. "The patched eye one seemed anxious to go on by his motions urging them to proceed. Rose watched him closely and at last saw him while his companion's backs were turned hold the lantern in such a way as to let his whole figure be distinctly seen and motion them to go back quickly it seemed so to Rose at least. She told this to her companion who was anxiously considering what should be done next" page 99. "And now for the next hour or two before the gray dawn came Lord John and Rose sat talking over all that had happened while they had been apart" page 149. unknown books

Memory albums were quite popular in America at this time especially among young women at female academies who would fill out books to remember time spent together.<br/><br/>Records Antoinette Butler's social life and academic record including her studies in French German Latin Physics Chemistry Geometry History and Literature. Also includes 11 photos of teachers and staff including two African-Americans identified as the Janitor and Janitress. Includes areas to enter information on the book's Owner their School the Commencement Exercises the Class Classmates and Reunions. Includes a short handwritten history of the school Brooklyn Heights Seminary. "Miss Brigham who was associated with him was a wonderful woman in every way. Every girl who was under her influence feels the uplifting force to this day and has imparted one small part of it to her children. After Miss Brigham's death in a railroad accident a Memorial hall was erected to her memory in connection with the Young Women's Christian Association.The curriculum which includes Kindergarten and one year of college work embraces almost every department of education." A note from her grandfather pasted in congratulating her on her graduation: "My darling granddaughter Antoinette - On this happy occasion that marks one of the transitional specks of your life I gladly transfer to your keeping one fo the the most precious souvenirs of the sainted grandmother whom you have only known through the loving memories of your own dear father and of the two aunties - one translated to the heavenly life - who with myself have watched with intense interest your development in to a lovely and helpful womanhood. God bless you my child! Grandfather."<br/><br/>Includes entries from several reunion gatherings around New York at venues such as the Women's University Club on Madison Square; and gatherings as they transitioned to adult lives: "This was a purpose for giving a silk stocking 'shower' for Marjorie Speers who had just announced her engagement to Gilbert Browning. She is the first one of our class to be engaged." Also pasted into book: 3 images of the school; report card; commencement invitation; commencement program; a color printed card "With Love and Devotion"; 8 newspaper clippings regarding the graduating class; the yellow silk ribbon which tied her diploma; the tulle bow which tied her commencement flowers; lovely hand-colored Class Day Program; 1 letter addressed to "My beautiful lady No longer the school girl!" handwritten speech that Butler gave during the Class Day Program. "John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Haverhill Mass.the house still stands in which Whittier was reared.Whittier was taken with illness while visiting at the home of his friend.he had a slight paralytic stroke which produced a difficulty in taking food o medicine and it was plain that he could not be removed to Annesbury where he had always hoped to die. He was conscious to the last and was grateful to everyone. He had little acute pain. He lay all night in peace and died in the morning."Charles Dickens: "The boy Charles was not strong but nevertheless before he was ten years old he was obliged to earn his own living. He was placed in a blacking warehouse an old ramshackle house near the Thames. The scenes in which he was brought up were the most degrading ones possible.During this time he spent much of his time in the reading room of the British Museum.In 1842 he made his first trip to America. Class photos of her in elementary to high school. Cutouts and information on Marysville High School where Mary Jane Hinshaw's father served on the Board of Education. Vibrant green cloth "M" varsity letter felt Bulldog and Debate letter. Founded in 1833 Stephens College is the second-oldest female educational establishment that is still a women's college in the United States. The Kansas State Normal School Emporia was established in March 1863 and it is the third-oldest public university in the state of Kansas. Includes 4 full-page landscape engravings of Smyrna Albany Bedford Springs PA and Zarapha the Ancient Sarepta in addition to 1 engraving on the title page. Includes 86 handwritten notes inscriptions and autographs from fellow students. 2 small portrait photos approx. 1 ½ x 1 in. and ¾ x ½ in. are pasted into book with note and signature. Some foxing and toning on engraving pages. Very good condition.<br/><br/>Signature and memento album kept by a student named Mary while studying at the Golden Hill Seminary in Bridgeport CT. Almost every page is filled with handwritten warm wishes of friendship pithy phrases and short poems such as "Not like the rose shall our friendship wither but like the evergreeen live forever" and "Our school soon will end. And I am going away. But try to remember your friend at some far distant day." "Is there no other tie that binds Has love the only claim Yes there is one that binds us fast And friendship is its name." Many of the inscriptions are dated to months in late spring or winter when academic semester would conclude and students would travel to their hometowns to visit with family. "Dear Mary May guardian angels their soft wings display To guard my friend from every dangerous way May health and happiness your steps attend May you always have an never want a friend In every state of life may you most happy be And when you're at a distance thing of me." "In future years when thou shall see Thou lines that I have penned Oh then may memory bring to view The image of your loving friend." "Something you wished me to write So something it shall be And when you think of something Think of me." "As gold more splendid from the fire appears So "Friendship" brightens by the length of years." "Twine thy brow with a lofty wreath with a wreath made not of glittering jewels from some far off mine." Some classmates listed their hometowns along with their autographs including places as far away as New York City and even Canada. The Golden Hill Seminary was founded in 1856 as a boarding school that would provide a moral literary and domestic education for young ladies. An extensive collection of autographs notes and well-wishes from classmates at a boarding school for young ladies. <br/><br/>Women's colleges proliferated in the mid- to late- 19th century to fill the void created by their exclusion from most institutions of higher education. The prevailing notion that women were too delicate for a rigorous academic education was openly challenged when Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke at the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 "Man's intellectual superiority cannot be a question until woman has had a fair trial.When we shall have had our colleges our professions our trades for a century a comparison then may be justly instituted." Young women were quick to step up to the challenge; as quickly as female colleges opened they filled up. This document dates only from 14 years after Seneca Falls. unknown books
17021Women Education Handwritten Composition book of young lady filled with handwritten poems essays and stories. 111 handwritten pages. Signed "Miss L. Sargeson" and dated "9-6-75" on first page. Entries date to 1875. Original boards. 9 x 7.5 in. Decorative green and purple flower design on covers page edges gilt. Includes several verses from Shakespeare including a few lines from A Midsummer's Night Dream: "Night's swift dragons cut the clouds full fast And yonder shines Aurora's harbinger At whose approach ghosts wandering here and there Troop home to churchyards." Includes an excerpt about "The Moon" from John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost: "Rising in clouded majesty at length Apparent queen unveiled her peerless light And o'er the dark her silver mantle threw." Notably women writers are also represented in the composition book. She includes "Continuance of Moral Education" by Harriet Martineau the British social theorist who is often cited as the first female sociologist. Also includes material originally written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Sir Walter Scott and Scottish writer John Wilson pen name Christopher North. Copying essays poetry stories and compositions was the standard teaching tool throughout the 19th century. The exercise taught handwriting spelling grammar knowledge of literature and other subjects of the material and elocution. This composition book is an excellent example of a young lady's schoolwork in the mid-19th century. Spine is damaged with losses. 4 pages have stray marks or scribbles in margins from a later hand in blue ink not affecting text. Good to very good condition. unknown books

Assorted material affixed to leaves throughout; handful of laid-in material primarily letters. Few blank or partially filled pages; most pages filled with writing and/or pasted-in material. Printed green line drawings illustrations and ornaments by Leta Hazzard Schell throughout. 9-1/4" x 6". Inserted material varies in size. <br/><br/>The graduation album of Voris Awilda Matheny documenting her senior year at West Durham High School in Durham North Carolina. Named the "Poetess" in the hand-written list of class officers Voris seems to have been well-liked and active in school life as well as the "star pupil" of at least one teacher who writes admiringly in the Faculty notes that Voris "had the perseverance genius and gift of poetry to write 'Lohengrin' in rhyme." She was also passionately involved in the debate team providing accounts of several debates the associate editor of the student newspaper the Clarion and the Chaplain of the Adelphian Literary Society. Voris later attended Duke University. The album includes printed sections for messages from faculty and classmates the class "yell" and motto photographs invitations programs sporting events "Spreads and Entertainments" "Music and Dramatics" "Fun and Frolics" including a program for the 1923 "West Durham School Minstrel" which featured "Coontown Thirteen Club Song Hits" ethnic dances such as the "Gypsy Tambourine Drill" and "Cotton Picking Dance" and concluded with a finale of "Old Zip Coon" social events etc. The "Class History" "Class Prophecy" and "Class Poem" were written by the students and provide insight into the composition of the class and via the "Class Prophecy" -- written by "Piggie" White in the form of a fictional 1935 newspaper about the students -- the student's notions about the lives ahead of them. Of particular note is a section of the Prophecy entitled "Women Invade Politics" in which Miss Minnie Holt is a lawyer who has never lost a case; Miss Rhoda Kelley is "the first woman president of the U.S." and who "never feels tremors on addressing Congress for she once debated at Chapel Hill"; and Miss Virgie Reese is a famed public speaker who stumped for Miss Kelley and is "rumored.to shortly use these unusual powers of speech to get herself at the head of the Klux-Klan." Pasted-in material includes printed programs student calling cards a leaf of the Clarion envelopes with manuscript letters and invitations folded inside assorted other notes and cards 4 small photographs of individual students botanical material napkins etc. Laid in are a wedding invitation a card containing manuscript debate notes and two letters sent to one Harry G. Rosenbluh from Julius Nelson regarding a "typewriting art" contest and including two sheets of sample designs; it is unclear what relation Mr. Rosenbluh or Mr. Nelson may have to Ms. Matheny if any. An unusually well-rounded graduation book providing insight into the life and plans of students particularly female students in the South during the interwar period. C. R. Two hand colored cutouts of Kewpie babies a popular type of doll at the time. <br/><br/>Photo and memory album of Reva Leslie a popular high school student in the 1920s who writes about dances parties and clubs. "I can remember the first party I ever attended at Lincoln. I was a scrub and a Sr. asked me to a dance in the evening.I went to a Hi-Jinks. I had oodles of fun there.I went to all the basketball games but one and we sure had a swell team.I went to the Army dance with Raymond and Johnnie introduced me as "Captain" of the Girls Reserves.I even can say I like very much the faculty or at least some of them."<br/><br/>A large class photos identifies Leslis as "me" in addition to friends such as Mabel Payne; and she draws in cartoon figures of schoolmates who missed the class photo. Inscriptions from friends show her likability and kindness. "I hope that we will be pals for many years to come even if we happen to be far apart. My love for you is growing more each day and i hope it will continue on thru the years. I hope you will remember the many days we spent together at parties dances and everywhere we went we were the inseparable sisters I hope you won't object. This scribbling is terrible but your used to that aren't you honey.I want to be considered your very bestest pal. You'll let me won't you dear" Another from an admirer: "I had a good time at all the parties and football games you attended with me and hope you had the same". There are many photos of friends including at the beach and in stage productions; some friend's names are printed in full while other are identified by nicknames such as "Lu" and "Vi" showing the closeness of these bonds.<br/><br/>Leslie was a Class Officer as Secretary and there are many photos of her as an active student including various clubs and photos of her and friends labelled "Three of a kind" and "one of the three muskateers". There's even photos of girls playing playing hockey in school uniforms. Includes a poem about a late night club in which she describes having "oodles of fun": "To the Hi-Jinx the Hi-Jinx of course you'll come. Wear any costume you'll surely have fun. The time will be merry our hearts will be light! Oh come ye lassie and join in the night." The last inscription written from "Eddie Robbins" was notably updated after graduation with the new salutation "To the Dearest Wife". His original message reads: "One friend in a thousand Solomon says is more close than a brother and its worthwhile seeking him half your days if you find him before the others. Nine hundred and ninety nine of them looks for what they can get out of you but the thousandth friend is worth them all and will stick to you. With the whole wide world against you." Original boards. Floral decorative pattern in white blue and gold on both covers page edges gilt. 9 x 7.5 in. Signed "Miss L. Sargeson" on first page. Filled with handwritten poems and essays including work by Edgar Allen Poe James Montgomery William Wordsworth Charles Dickens Elizabeth Browning Shakespeare Washington Irving and Oliver Goldsmith. Also short fiction such as "The Monk" part of Laurence Sterne's Sentimental Journey through France and Italy first published in 1765 and reprinted several times in the 19th century for teaching elocution.  Copying essays poetry stories and compositions was the standard teaching tool throughout the 19th century. The exercise taught handwriting spelling grammar knowledge of literature and other subjects of the material and elocution. The handwritten notebook also contains scientific material including a composition on "The Eye" investigating the properties of the human eye and eyes of other animals and animals that have no eyes such as "the starfishes have are mere sensitive points dimly conscious of forms." Also historical material including a composition on the Ancient Greek city Thermopile and a letter from Protestant Reformer Martin Luther to his son. This composition book is an excellent example of a young lady's schoolwork in the mid-19th century. 13 pages have stray marks or scribbles from a later hand in purple blue and orange ink; most marks are in margins and do not affect text legibility. Original black cloth boards. 209 black and white vintage photos of various sizes from 1 x 1 in. to 5.5 x 3 in. Includes 12 postcards of locations in Washington state and British Columbia Canada. 40 pages. Album is completely full with photos on every page.<br/><br/>Notably includes a photo of a young woman graduate in cap and gown who holds a pennant that reads "Haddon H.S. 1911". In another photo a women holds a pennant that includes "1918". Other images in the album include women playing tennis and riding bicycles. Girls wear uniforms and march across a field in formation or perform calisthenics; other photos show the same schoolgirls camping in nature amongst tents and forest scenery. There are also images of younger children at school and at play wearing dress up clothes or preparing for a stage production; they wear colonial-era costumes and one is even dressed in a Japanese kimono. Some photos depict community life such as local parades in which dozens of American flags are proudly waved; and even images of shipbuilders at work. Few photos have handwritten captions but those that do show personality of the owner with remarks such as: "cutie" and "happy". Includes 12 postcards of the University of Washington Seattle campus and of attractions around Victoria British Columbia. A memorabilia recording many aspects of the first major movement of women's education in the United States brings depth to a movement that was groundbreaking in its time but today is largely at risk of disappearing from the historical record. 45 pages written overall and some additional pages of handwritten verse and an article cutout for an event of Henry Ward Beecher laid in. Entries date 1835-1897. Most are from the areas of Deerfield Exeter Brentwood and Lowell in Massachusetts. 8 x 6.25 in. Original green leather boards. Gilt edges and gilt detail to spine and covers. Personally embossed with "Caroline Marshall" original owner in gilt to the cover and an illustration of a harp. Includes frontispiece engraving of girls gathering flowers. One page has 3 miniature watercolors surrounding an entry; one page has a hand-colored illustrations of flowers. The person who originally gave her the album as a gift has written on the first pages "Miss Marshall This Album is a beautiful emblem of your own character." Memory albums held autographs sentiments and reminiscences of friends and schoolmates similar to yearbooks today. Young women particularly those finishing their time at a female academy and preparing to leave their school friends tended to be the ones to create friendship albums. One entry composed personally to Miss Marshall is from a Harvard University student. "Go forth thou little book! Go forth-and gather thy store- Oh! many a token which friendship leaves here May long to the heart of thy owner to be dear When the friendship or friend is no more." Original 6 x 4" black and white photograph portrait of original album owner pasted to inside front cover. "Edith LaRue" handwritten in blue ink along bottom edge. Color illustrations pasted in throughout. Loose portrait photo of a young man. Memory albums held autographs sentiments and reminiscences of friends and schoolmates similar to yearbooks today. Young women particularly those finishing their time at a female academy and preparing to leave their school friends tended to be the ones to create friendship albums. As is typical of the time most of the entries are non-personal pieces of poetry often with the recipient's name filled in several spots to "personalize" the entry. "Your album is a garden spot Where all your friends may sow. So I will plant for get me not And see if it will grow." Entries include several from "Your schoolmate and friend" or the like. Several decorative cutouts pasted in throughout the album of hands books letters birds bouquets and the American flag.
