L'ouvrage est dédiée au "Citoyen de Wailly" (à prononcer "d'Ouailli" comme le précise la note en base de page !) qui avait été chargé avec Domergue de l'examen des manuels grammaticaux présentés au concours de 1795. Dans cet ouvrage, l'homme politique (il sera notamment sous-préfet de Cognac en Charente de 1804 à 1808), financier et grammairien Marc-Alexandre Caminade (1746-1816) s'attaque aux obscurités de la métaphysique grammaticale, défend une graphie moderne des pluriels ("parents" au lieu de "parens"), améliore le repérage du texte en numérotant ses paragraphes, etc... On trouvera sur le site du CTLF une belle et riche notice de cet ouvrage, rédigée par Jacques-Philippe Saint-Gérand. Les deux comptes rendus des travaux de la Société d'encouragement reproduisent les discours d'Auguste Ratisbonne,fondateur de la société et Théodore Ratisbonne, avocat et membre actif de l'organisation.Ils comportent les listes des sociétaires et donateurs et rappellent les activités et les buts de la société. "En Alsace où les Israélites sont plus nombreux et où la plus grande partie d'entre eux se trouve dans un dénuement complet, nous comptons à peine quelques familles dont les bienfaits multipliés ne pouvaient suffire à l'entretien d'une foule de vieillards, de veuves et d'orphelins; (...) le Consistoire de ce département n'a pas un instant reculé devant les obstacles matériels : une école centrale est établie à Strasbourg et plus de 90 enfants de la ville et des campagnes y sont élevés, la plupart gratuitement (...) les jeunes filles sont reçues dans une école particulière et leur éducation a été confiée à une institutrice éclairée (...)" Les dates des comptes rendus -1826 et 1827- sont particulièrement significatives. Elles se situent avant et après la conversion de Théodore Ratisbonne au catholicisme. Dans l'Essai sur l'éducation, qui date de 1828, par une lettre à son père placée en exergue, l'avocat lui rend hommage tout en revenant sur sa conversion. L'abbé Bautain est l'un des guides spirituels de Théodore Ratisbonne qui l'ont conduit au catholicisme.

Six volumes in three. Well illustrated with (36) fine copper plate engravings by Audouin and Gaucher after designs by Monnet. 8vo. All edges gold. Foxed and lightly stained here and there. Worn contemporary full leather bindings, with the gold arms and ownerships of Harry Vane Milbank. The eldest son of Sir Frederick Milbank, Bart. Milbank was a celebrated duelist and adventurer. He is currently best known as the second husband of Alice Sidonie Vandenburg (d. 1916), whose portrait by John Singer Sargent sold at Sotheby's in 2001 for almost $300,000.00. Demoustier was a bit of a mama's boy, who gave up his life as a lawyer in the city to live in him mother's rural home and pursue writing. This work, intended for the instruction of young women, was enormously popular. It first appeared in 1790, and this is the last edition published in his lifetime. Most of the attention to this edition has been paid to the remarkable engraved illustrations. They form an important element in the romantic iconography of the classical revival. Age stain to text. Printed on the front cover: 'Note to Borrowers. In consequence of the numerous applications at the store of the publisher to borrow the directory, and as he has been at great expense and trouble to compile it for the accommodation of the public, he has come to the determination of CHARGING SIX CENTS for every search. Purchasers are earnestly requested not to loan their books.' On the title page is the autograph ownership of: 'Francis Shoemaker, 51 S. Wharves.' He was a merchant with an extensive trade in Cuba, and the Caribbean, and is listed in the Directory. Text printed in two columns. It includes: the names of the citizens alphabetically arranged, with their occupations and places of abode; a list of the streets, alleys, lanes, courts, roads and wharves, banks, insurance companies; national and their societies, literary, scientific and charitable institutions; Custom House Department, Post Office, churches with their pastors and sextons, foreign, consular and other agents, resident abroad and in the United States, &c. There is also a chart of Regulations (for the ringing) of the State House Bell in Case of Fire. Many examples of this directory includes an Almanac, but here that is replaced by: The Will of the Late Stephen Girard, Esq Procured from the Office for the Probate of Wills, with a Short Biography of his Life. Philadelphia: Published by Thomas and Robert Desilver 1832. The controversy over the Will of Stephen Girard (1750-1831) was of great interest in this era. His large estate was divided - with $140,000 given to relatives and charities; $300,000 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania "for internal improvement by canal navigation"; his real estate in Louisiana (208,000 acres) he left to New Orleans; $500,000 he left to Philadelphia to create Delaware Avenue, clean up the waterfront, pave, remove all wooden buildings and other projects to improve the city. The bulk of his estate was left to create what became Girard College, to educate the poor white orphan boys with a trade. His will gives instructions about the College, both physical and administrative. Some of Girard's heirs contested the will in what became a "classic in American legal history, contributing not a little to the clarification of the law of charities" (DAB). The front board has a portrait of Martin Luther and on the rear board is a similar portrait of Philip Melanchthon. The boards are almost detached. No clasps. These plaque stamped bindings are rarely found in the current antiquarian book market. quite scarce. Several early ownerships including one (unidentified) from 1652. Later stamped ownership of William Harris. Henrich Smet (also Henricus Smetius Alostanus, Henricus Smetius a Leda, or Hendrik de Smet) (1535-1614) of Heidelberg was a physician and humanist scholar. The first edition of Prosodia came out in 1599 at Frankfurt. In 1603 Antoine de Harsy (fl. 1572-1607) published this second edition. It was a very popular anthology of Latin quotations and their authors that functioned as a kind of students' dictionary of phrases that could be quickly traced to the correct classical author.
