New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 24 cm9. In English. 2 volumes set: (678 p.), richly ills., photos. A history of Robert College: The American College for Girls and Bogaziçi University (Bosphorus University). This two volume slipcased set is the story of two American Schools in Istanbul – Robert College and American College for Girls- both of them founded in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The story takes the two schools through the last half-century of the Ottoman Empire and the first half-century of the Turkish Republic. The last part of the book tells the story of the founding of Bogazici University on the campus of the old Robert College in Bebek-Rumeli Hisarý , and the establishment of the new co-educational Robert College on the campus of the old American College for Girls in Arnavutköy. The principal characters in the story are the men and women who worked at the two colleges as teachers and administrators, and the students who studied there, many of them going on to distinguished careers, including two prime ministers of Turkey and two of Bulgaria. Bogazici University and the new Robert College, both founded in 1971, continued a tradition that has now linked east and west for over a century, perpetuating bonds of culture and friendship that have endured through wars and the fall and rise of nations. Hundreds of photographs in each volume visually trace the history of these two venerable institutions. A very heavy and oversize set.
pp. (10), 84. Small 12 mo. 130 mm. Early floral wraps. August Hermann Francke (1663-1727) was a great German Protestant churchman and educator. In his early career he came under the influence of the Pietistism. In 1686, at Leipzig, he founded the Collegium Philobiblicum, at which a number of graduates met regularly for the systematic study of the Bible, philologically and practically. He soon became popular as a lecturer; but the peculiarities of his teaching almost immediately aroused a violent opposition. In 1691 he fled Erfurt where he had found work as "deacon" of one of the city churches. Through Spener's influence, Francke accepted an invitation to fill the chair of Greek and oriental languages in the new University of Halle, which was at that time being organized by the elector Frederick III of Brandenburg; and at the same time, the chair having no salary attached to it, he was appointed pastor of Glaucha in the immediate neighborhood of the town. He afterwards became Professor of Theology. For the remaining thirty-six years of his life, he discharged the twofold office of pastor and professor with energy and success. At the very outset of his labors he had been profoundly impressed with a sense of his responsibility towards the numerous outcast children who were growing up around him in ignorance and crime. In 1695 he instituted his Waysenhause (Orphan House), supported by public charity. A single room was at first sufficient, but within a year it was found necessary to purchase a house, to which another was added in 1697. In 1698 there were 100 orphans under his charge to be clothed and fed, besides 500 children who were taught as day scholars. The schools grew in importance and were later known as the Franckesche Stiftungen. The education given was strictly religious. Hebrew was included, while the Greek and Latin classics were neglected; the Homilies of Macanus took the place of Thucydides. The same principle was consistently applied in his university teaching. Even as professor of Greek he had given great prominence in his lectures to the study of the Scriptures; but he found a much more congenial sphere when, in 1698, he was appointed to the chair of theology. Halle became a center from which Pietism became very widely diffused over Germany, and well beyond. His Waysenhause Orphans' School became famous for its printing presses and publishing program. This pretty little 1740 edition of DIE WAHRE HERTZENS-BUSSE is apparently unique. We find no copies of it recorded in the U.S. or in Europe. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! GER-GER1

Osman Nuri Ergin was the initiator of the studies regarding modern municipalities' studies and gave so many qualified books related to Ottoman-Turkish urbanism and municipalities' studies scientifically. He was also the first scholar who was one of the architectures of municipalities' studies and history of urbanism and education. His best known book in this field called "Mecelle-i Umûr-i Belediyye". The book is one of the main sources for the history of urbanism, especially for the history of Istanbul. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and other metropolitan cities of Turkey function on the bases of what he declared. Since he worked as an officer for the government during the World War I, the time of Abdulhamid II and at the time of the young Republic, he was one of the figures who know the cultural and social changes in Turkish society. During this cultural transformation, he played a role of bridge in between Ottoman culture and modern day Turkey with the help of some enlightened scholars. He had so many attempts to transform Ottoman Sufi culture to the next generations. To reach this goal, he wrote so many valuable books. Although he wrote books in the fields such as Sufi order, grammar, history of arts, literature, he was not able to publish all of his works in his life. This 'Maarif tarihi' [= History of education] is still the most comprehensive corpus on Ottoman / Turkish education and cultural history.
