19505036Washington DC: Cortez W. Peters Business School 1950. About very good. 60pp. Original purple wrappers printed in silver. Some soiling and staining to covers minor chipping and rubbing. Small unobtrusive stain to fore-edge of text overall even toning. A seemingly-unrecorded yearbook from the Washington D.C. branch of the Cortez W. Peters Business School the first African-American-owned business school in the United States. The co-educational school was founded in 1834 in the Nation's Capital followed in the next few years by branches in Chicago and Baltimore. The founder Cortez W. Peters taught himself to type as a child and went on to become the first African-American champion of the World's Amateur Typing Contest. Peters' school was one of the first to teach typing to Black students while also offering instruction in shorthand and other clerical skills. The present yearbook begins with a message from Peters which strikes a conciliatory tone in the wake of racial tensions that followed the conclusion of the Second World War: "We naturally resent discrimination lack of opportunities oppression. But on the other hand there are many other values to be considered which should make us tolerant and willing to work out these traditional handicaps generally." This is followed by messages from the dean and class president Eva Itene Brown then portraits of students and faculty a class history a class prophecy class will class poem and twelve pages of group photographs including shots of the men's and women's basketball teams the coronation ball and images featuring students in the classroom. Many of the students both men and women have included words of advice or stated their personal goals which are printed beside their portraits "To be a good typist" "To be a stenographer" and so forth.

OCLC lists a single copy of three similar yearbooks all under different titles from other years and branches of the school Washington D.C. and Chicago in 1948 and an undated yearbook from Baltimore but not this particular year at the school's home base. 1914List2104Tuskegee 1914. Oblong 8vo decorative pebbled cloth over thin boards 8 x 5 inches. With fourteen pages of inscriptions from fellow classmates. Some pages detached wear and toning good condition. Good. An interesting book of dedicatory verse to a student in the Tuskegee Institute class of 1915 from his classmates all written in May of 1914. Stewart writes on the front pastedown “ Myb album is open come and see for you to waste a line or two upon me so when the summer days make us part I shall always remember you in my heart.†Stewart was from Taylorsville Illinois. The inscriptions from his classmates - mostly sentimental verse- are an interesting document in the Tuskegee coeducational model and more broadly shed light on the culture of the African-American student culture during the time. “Dear Stewart†his roommate Emmit Strode writes “This summer you and I may be far apart but I hope that you will bear in mind that I am with thee in heart each day avoe all things do the right and may your future days be bright.†Stewart is the only student from Illinois represented the others being from Alabama Mississippi Oklahoma Louisiana Texas and Georgia. One classmate writes “ Responsibilities gravitate to the person who can shoulder them and power flows to the man who knows how.â€. unknown
1894WRCAM55632Hampton Va.: Printed by students of the Institute 1894. 8pp. Illus. Small octavo. Original pictorial self- wrappers. Minor soiling light wear. Very good plus. A rare fundraising appeal from the illustrious Hampton Normal Institute aimed specifically at the members of the Christian Endeavor Society in 1894. The pamphlet was written by Principal Hollis B. Frissell and printed by the African American and Native American students at the institute. The pamphlet includes several photographs of the campus and the classroom along with a group shot of the "Class of '94." The purpose of the pamphlet is stated in the second paragraph of text: "This leaflet is prepared especially for the Christian Endeavor Society in hopes that with the information it gives of Hampton Institute and its needs it will arouse interest among young Christians in our work and bring our cause before you as an object worthy of your Christian charity." Frissell then expounds upon the training of the "head" "hand" and "heart" of the Hampton students before enumerating his institution's funding needs. Donations may be contributed to the institute's general fund or earmarked for the establishment of one-time or endowed scholarships or given to the missionary fund the "apparatus fund" the housekeeping fund or as a subscription to THE SOUTHERN WORKMAN.

Hampton Institute apparently issued similar pamphlets under the same title on a regular if not an annual basis in the 1890s though whether they issued more than one per year is not known and any differences are likely only found in the text. OCLC records just seven copies of an 8pp. pamphlet from 1894 with this wrapper title which we assume is the same as the present copy though we cannot be sure. It appears that the present copy differs from at least the copies at Duke and Wisconsin which are dated in print by Frissell "September 1894." It is possible even likely that the Hampton Institute issued this appeal targeted at the Christian Endeavor Society as well as other more general fundraising pamphlets in the same year. In any case it is a rare appeal from a significant African American and Native American educational institution. OCLC 6876159. Printed by students of the Institute unknown books

189241503Mecklenburg VA 1892. Sewn gatherings disbound with remanants of perished leather spine. Wear and soiling throughout; some chips occasionally causing minimal textual loss; last leaf quite ragged to inner margin significantly affecting final third of text. Writing in general legible and neat. Good condition withal. 29 leaves of lined wove paper including 4 half-leaves. Lacking first leaf pp 1 - 2 of lecture notes; 4 stubs. Inconsistently hand-numbered throughout.Manuscript notes in ink and/or pencil to recto and verso of leaves with varying amounts of writing per pg. ~1500 words. Some intratextual hand-drawn illustrations and graphs to lecture notes. 11-1/2" x 7-1/2"

A notebook that appears to have been intended for lecture notes kept by Presley Llewellyn Hinton Jr. during a science class at Randolph-Macon College from 1858 - 59 but that was employed for several different purposes by other members of his family during the same period and throughout the Civil War. The Hintons were slaveholders owning at least 13 slaves according to the 1860 slave schedule and longtime prominent members of the community. The lecture notes which comprise hand-numbered pp 3 - 30 and 51 - 55 are from lectures taught by B. Puryear Professor of Chemistry and Natural Philosophy; subjects covered include fairly introductory material regarding dew evaporation electricity elements of chemistry hydrogen and nitrogen gas carbon etc. and the like. Following the first section of lecture notes three pages by one of the Hinton parents we speculate Mrs. Hinton detail Presley’s service in the Confederate Army Company A 3rd Virginia Cavalry as well as that of his brother William from 1861 - 63 largely their leave-taking and visits home: “My Son William Emmet Hinton joind the Confederate Army and left home on the 14th day May 1861 to join his company Mecklinburg Cavalry at Lockets Store near Lombardy Grove. Many relatives and friends met . . . to take leave of their dear sons relations & friends who consented with cheerfulness to leave their quiet and happy homes to battle against our enemy the Yankee who are worse than Indian savages Yea to go through all the hardships privations difficulties and attending a camp life. . . . My Son Presley Lewellyn Hinton joind the Confederate Army and left home on the 26th day May 1861 . . . He would have gone on with his brother William but he was not prepared as he had just returned from the University of Virginia . . .” Approximately 15 remaining pages interrupted by the last section of Presley’s lecture notes are filled with a detailed account record of tuition charged for teaching the daughters and some sons of local families which we speculate was kept by the boys’ sister primarily because of the type of lessons taught. These included piano lessons worsted work and samplers grammar arithmetic geography the history of England and philosophy; fees for ink copy books and other supplies are also included. Another account record follows for bonds of some sort in the same hand as other and a love letter from Presley to a Miss Annie fills both recto and verso of the final leaf. Interspersed with these and sometimes written over top in pencil are the youthful scribblings and pencilled math work of James H. Palmer also of Mecklinberg dated 1892; he appears to have used the manuscript for scrap paper. All in all a uniquely faceted manuscript illustrating many aspects of the life of one Virginia family during the Civil War as well as the paper shortages that likely occasioned such thrift. hardcover books
