1973441j1184Stanford California: Hoover Institution Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. 0817911316 . "An analysis of the impact of Western technology and skills on the industrial development of the Soviet Union. The hypothesis is that the absorption of Western technology and skills has been by far the most significant factor in the development of the Soviet economy. No fundamental industrial innovation of Soviet origin has been identified there between 1917 and 1965 and preliminary investigation suggests this situation continued throughout the sixties. Concludes that the Soviet Union's central planning has virtually no capability for self-generated indigenous innovation. The project's brief existence saw the inauguration of the Notting Hill Neighbourhood Service one of the first centres to offer drug and legal advice in London the International Times the UFO Club and the birth of Notting Hill Carnival. Based on the American free universities the LFS offered help and advice on a variety of social issues including housing problems race relations wages immigration and mental health. Its contingent included the organizers John Hopkins and Rhaune Laslett activist Michael X writers Jeff Nuttall and Alexander Trocchi actress Anjelica Huston psychiatrist R. D. Laing and Pete Jenner who had just started managing Pink Floyd. Some of the band's earliest gigs were fundraisers for LFS and the community events that would become Notting Hill Carnival. The Carnival evolved in the mid-1960s from an indoor festival of Caribbean culture organized by Trinidadian journalist and activist Claudia Jones. The LFS were responsible for the first event held outside in August 1966.
