Softcover bound in printed self-wrappers decorated with the printer's device. Once likely bound in with other pamphlets with stab marks and remnants of paper along the spine. 72 pages including the front wrapper. Very good.</p><p>First edition.</p><p>Signed in type "J. I. L." and dated "Junio 20 de 1812" the pamphlet is by Jose Rivera Y Gil a liberal and a defender of constitutionalist ideas that led to his imprisonment and exile. He enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Salamanca in November 1779 and graduated with a degree in law. In March 1790 he joined the Army of Navarre. With the French invasion of 1808 he was appointed commander-in-chief of the first reserve battalion of the Regimiento de Tuy He acted as a lawyer joining the La Coruna bar association in 1812. In the same year he became part of the Citizen for the Constitution team temporarily serving as the War Auditor of Galicia until November 1813. He wrote several articles criticizing the Spanish political system using various pseudonyms or simply an initial. He was secretary of the Galician Censorship Board. He was arrested in the Castle of San Anton in 1814 and sentenced to a six-year suspension from practicing law stripped of his military rank and prohibited from entering A Coruna Madrid and royal sites and ordered to pay the costs of the proceedings. When the constitutional regime ended he was arrested again and exiled.</p><p>The Filosofo Rancio with whom the author is arguing was Francisco Alvarado commonly known as "the Rancid Philosopher" 1756-1814. Alvarado was a Spanish priest Dominican friar philosopher theologian and reactionary writer. While in exile in Portugal in 1811 he published the "Carta del Filo sofo Rancioto" to refute the writings and opinions of renowned liberals who were either members of parliament or had influence over many members of parliament. Fellows Clerk dated May 15th and the second headed 'No.3' for "each of the Commissioners Inspectors and Trustees of the Several Ward and Public Schools to be distributed among the Teachers" Albert Gilbert Clerk with an additional date of Oct.16th 1850. The Committee followed the recommendations included in the report and "Resolved That the Board of Education earnestly recommend the Inspectors and Trustees of the several Ward and Public Schools to exert their united influence to abolish corporal punishment in every department of the Schools under their control." it was signed by Dr. William A. Walters Samuel A. Crapo John McLean and Wm. S. Duke. Though the various boards had encourage less severity beginning in 1823 it was not until twenty years after this resolve in 1870 that the practice was banned and which remained in effect despite attempts to reverse it over the years. Currently 19 states allow corporal punishment in schools. Rare. OCLC locates no copies of the first document and only one of the second: Trinity College. n.p. unknown books

Both woodcuts are designed by William Croome: the kitchen scene is engraved by Alexander Anderson America's first important wood engraver and the library scene by Alonzo Hartwell.
