Copy, on the same verso, from a niello belonged to the Durazzo collection. The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in prints by owner’s will, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by the amateurs. Bartsch describes these niello prints in his volume published in 1811, a date that therefore constitutes the terminus ante quem for the execution The composition seems to have as pendant the niello depicting St. George and the dragon

"Starting with the understanding of education as a genuine dialigue between teacher and student this book elucidates in direct and vivid prose that combination of 'psychosocial moratorium' for the student and existential maturity of the teacher that is necessary if the hidden human image is to be revealed by education rather than obscured." - Maurice Friedman, author of Touchstones of Reality. Rollin was a brilliant educator whose most important works were written during his retirement. He was nearly sixty when he began this "Traite des Etudes", which explains his method of teaching and studying belles-lettres. It contains ideas which seem hackneyed now, but which then were new and revolutionary - for example: the necessity of studying national history; using school-books written in the vernacular; and the importance of mathematics and science in general studies. Rollin is most famous to collectors for his unfinished world history. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! FR3
4to. [272 x 215 mm.] (192p.). Each page framed in a red printed floral border. All edges gold. Riviere binding of calf is worn and now needs re-backing. ** Eton Prize Book (Swann, 1850). Decimus Juniu s Juvenalis (Circa: 55 - 130 A.D.) was one of the greatest of Roman satirists. Born in Aquinum, Italy, he served in Britain and in Egypt as tribune in the army. He is best known for sixteen splendid s atires in verse, dealing with life in the Roman era under Domitian and his successors. He affected the attitudes an angry Stoic moralist. He exposed unnatural vices; anguished over the misery of pover ty; fooled with the precarious life of courtiers and status-seekers; and condemned the extravagance of the ruling classes. His works are often bound with those of Aulus Persius Flaccus (34?62 A.D.), a nother Roman satirical poet who was greatly attached to the Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Cornutus. His writings (only six short satires), exposed to censure the corruption and folly of contemporar y Roman life, contrasting it with the ideals of the Stoics and of earlier Rome. The text of this edition is quite beautifuly printed. W112
460 pages including index. In 1945, the Headmaster-Designate of an Approved School suggested to the Trustees that it would be of much practical value to have an intensive study of a group of delinquents made by one who could be granted the necessary facilities by residence for a period in a School and by virtual adoption on to its staff. They were fortunate in securing the services of the author for the purpose. Mr. Stott, for four years, enjoyed the active co-operation of the Warden and the members of the permanent staff of a School whose identity it is not, for obvious reasons, possible to disclose. The present volume is the result of Mr. Stott's investigation and of his sympathetic and expert approach to the task thus entrusted to him. Unmarked. Moderate wear.
