Japanese American family photograph album 1939-1952 documenting community life in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area during the years before and after the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans under Executive Order 9066. The photographs record a multigenerational Japanese American household during the period when families displaced from West Coast communities during World War II returned to rebuild homes schools and neighborhood networks. Domestic portraits school photographs and public outings show children parents and elders participating in everyday civic life in the Bay Area illustrating the process of community restoration among Nikkei families following their release from War Relocation Authority camps in 1945. Inscriptions and identifiable locations place members of the family within San Francisco neighborhoods historically associated with Japanese American settlement including areas of Pacific Heights and the Western Addition where many returning families reestablished residence after the war.

Photo album containing thirty two original black and white photographs mounted to black paper leaves and created between the late 1930s and early 1950s. Brown embossed string tied album measuring approximately 7 x 10 inches with photographs ranging from roughly 2.5 x 3.5 inches to 5 x 7 inches mounted to black paper leaves. The photographs depict family members in domestic interiors gardens schoolyards and public gathering places across San Francisco and nearby communities. Several early images show girls wearing patterned kimono posed before elaborate tiered hina doll displays associated with the Japanese Girls' Day festival reflecting the continuation of Japanese cultural traditions within immigrant households. Additional portraits include an older man standing with two dogs in a garden and family members gathered outside neighborhood storefronts. School life appears prominently in several large class photographs identified as "Pacific Heights School" and dated 1949 1950 and 1951 placing the family's children within integrated postwar classrooms. Other inscriptions identify individuals and locations including "Tsutako 1939 Vallejo County" "Jean Sato 1952 Sigmund Stern Grove" and references to the "Mrs. Mackey Family" indicating connections within broader Japanese American and interracial community networks in the Bay Area. One photograph also records a visit to the "Golden Gate International Exposition - 1939 Main Gateway" situating the family within the civic and cultural landscape of San Francisco before the outbreak of the war.

The photographs collectively document the persistence of Japanese American cultural traditions and the rebuilding of social life after the disruption of wartime incarceration. Between 1942 and 1945 more than 120000 people of Japanese ancestry were removed from their homes on the West Coast and confined in camps administered by the War Relocation Authority. Album covers and leaves show wear while photographs remain largely clean without creasing or tears. Overall very good condition. Following the war many families returned to California and began reconstructing community institutions schools and neighborhood networks that had been interrupted by forced removal. This album records those processes through scenes of education festivals domestic life and public recreation within the Bay Area's evolving multicultural environment during the early postwar years. unknown
73838An archive of manuscript documents letters and indentures dating between 1735 and 1829 from the Alden family descendants of a Mayflower passenger the Hon. John Alden who was the seventh signer of the Mayflower compact and arrived with the Pilgrims in 1620 serving as one of the Governor's assistants. He settled in Duxbury and was one of the original proprietors of Bridgewater Massachusetts a town 20 miles from Plymouth and 26 miles from Boston where his descendants settled as farmers and leaders in the community.

The collection contains a total of 48 documents relating to a variety of members of the Alden family. Among the earliest documents are four legal documents dated between 1735 and 1737 concerning the sale of land by Daniel Alden 1691-1767 to his brother Seth 1710-84. Their great grandfather was Mayflower passenger John Alden. Seth lived all his life in Bridgewater while his brother became a magistrate and moved to Connecticut. An additional five documents in the collection record the purchase of property in Bridgewater by Seth Alden from other family members.

Other documents show that members of the Alden family were involved in military activities before and after the American Revolution. The collection contains a contemporary copy of a letter addressed to Captain Seth Alden and dated February 27 1756 ordering him to make a list of "the several persons in the regiment under your command that have been employed in his Majesty's service within the two years last past." A second document dated September 25 1755 includes a list of names with the heading: "Capt. Seth Alden having drafted those that are here after." Two additional documents one dated 1790 are related to Captain Joseph Alden likely Seth's son and provide names of the whole "train-band" in his company. An additional 11 undated documents list soldiers by name and their return of arms and ammunition while three more documents consist of lists of names one which is labeled "A list of the 2nd Company 3rd Regiment."

Another small segment of this collection contains four documents two which are printed with holographic annotations concerning the collection of taxes between 1818 and 1829 for repairing and amending Bridgewater highways. Thomas Alden was listed as the surveyor of highways in Bridgewater and it appears he compiled these lists showing the amount of the assessment for each resident. There are also two letters to Thomas from Cyrus Alden then living in Boston. Cyrus complains about the condition of a horse he left with Thomas and in the other letter attempts to convince Thomas to set up a store in Bridgewater which he is willing to fund.

The documents are toned with general wear to some and creasing from prior folds. All are legible and together represent a rich resource of local history and genealogy concerning an American founding family. unknown books

The album begins with the Sheppard family from Morehead Kansas posing in front of their car before their year-long journey around the country which began in April of 1921. They started by visiting Grandma Sheppard in Missouri with four generations posing on the porch of the family home. They stopped in Quebec and Montreal documenting the drive with photographs of the St. Lawrence and Batiscan rivers. There are numerous pictures of the farm and the surrounding area with photos of horses ploughing fields fishing on the nearby river and working on the car. One photo of a parade in the street shows the arrival of the Duke of York when he was traveling through Canada. After leaving the farm the family traveled to Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon taking a variety of photographs displaying the enormity of the site and the beauty of the natural wonder. The last section shows photos of the campus of Montana State University especially focusing on the chemistry building Montana Hall and a room captioned "the office."

An extensive assemblage of photographs depicting a year-long road trip of a family. hardcover

Phillippe. It was first published by Joseph Gérard Barbou fl. 17521788 in Paris in 1744 with the imprint Sumptibus Mich. Steph. David filii. Another edition was produced by Barbou in 1761 followed by this nova edition expurgate of 1774 as the new cleansed version of the text. The reading of Roman histories was incredibly important to the law-abiding and enlightened audiences of Western Europe. This copy is significant for its distinguished provenance from a branch of the Walpole family who were likely the original owners. The Walpole family were deeply entrenched in 18th century British government; it would have been crucial for Thomas and Spencer Horatio to be well-read and maintain erudite political discourse with their contemporaries. Thomass cousin the better-known Horace established the famed Strawberry Hill library and press also contributing to the learned position of the family. The year 1774 the same year of this edition saw the death of King Louis XV of France and much social and political tension in the decade prior to the French Revolution. Sallusts works became particularly popular during the Enlightenment as they encouraged a deeper reading of the mind and manners of men. The preliminary note by Spencer Horatio proves that he had great depth of knowledge about social history and scholarly works. He was a lawyer by profession but was appointed to the rank Home Secretary in 1852 before the government fell and reappointed in 1858 only to resign in 1859 interestingly the same year as this copys dated note. The Barbou press was known for their fine and ample editions of classic history works and the French engraver Charles Nicolas Cochin the Younger was well-received in his time enjoying the court patronage of Louis XV. The famous portrait engraving of Thomas Walpole the elder was made by Cochin and it is likely these history engravings appealed to the family who might have regarded him as a favorite. This copy has a wonderful Walpole ownership history and is an important Sallustian Enlightenment-era work that is rarely found. OCLC locates two institutional copies in the US at NYU and BYU. 19459382San Jose California 1945. Very good . String-tied wood boards incised with painted illustrations. 96 pages with 483 black and white photographs inserted into corner mounts. Album very good plus with minimal wear; photos generally near fine or better.

This is an enormous album showing the family of Edward and Mary Pasqual Portuguese Americans from San Jose California.

According to Frederick G. Bohme in "The Portuguese in California" California Historical Society Quarterly 35 no. 3 1956: 233-52. https://doi.org/10.2307/25155067 the first permanent Portuguese settlers in North America arrived in 1654. They were expelled Jews who initially sought refuge in Holland then went to Brazil and fled to the Atlanticseaboard colonies when the Dutch were pushed from Brazil by the Portuguese that same year. The first Portuguese in California were fishermen from the Azore Islands; they came to California beginning in the 1850s via New Bedford Massachusetts where a large whaling fleet was based and where Portuguese in considerable numbers had settled. By the 1860s a majority of the crews but not the officers of whaling ships operating along the lower California coast were Portuguese. By the early 20th century Portuguese Americans were a significant part of the commercial fishing industry in California. By 1940 thirty-five percent of all Portuguese Americans lived in California.

According to the 1940 census Eddie was an upholsterer who owned his own business. The album confirms this with two photographs of his shop's store front which was located at 2nd and San Salvador. Also according to that census Eddie was born in the United States while Mary was born in The Azores.

Eddie served in the Aleutians during World War II and a couple dozen photos here show him and fellow service members. The family apparently owned a farm as there are approximately 15 photos showing family members working with cows heavy machinery and playing around hay bales.

The majority of the album consists of posed pictures of family and friends with approximately 200 depicting Eddie and Mary's young children. We see the family at picnics hikes in the woods and mountains and various trips throughout the state. unknown

19300010290Yellowstone National Park United States Niagara Falls. Good with no dust jacket. 1930. Hardcover. On offer is a beautiful richly-decorated Yellowstone Park leather photo album portraying the Spear familys 1930 family trip intertwined with photographs of scenes for a long-past American west. The unknown author/photographer of this album accompanied her parents on a road trip from their home across the United States to the Rocky Mountains and back. They also took a side-trip to Niagara Falls in Canada. From context we can determine that it is a young woman who is traveling with her parents. The family surname is Spear and context suggests that they likely lived in Rhode Island. The album opens with two pages from a tourist publication broadsheet. These two pages carry a full map of the continental United States and illustrate the main highways crisscrossing the country. On one page she lists in order the states that they passed through. The pages are full of black and white photographs many showing a warm sepia tone. They depict individual family members they visited on their journey and scenes from places visited. Some photographs capture landscapes others interesting historical sites and still others some of the fascinating characters they encountered on their travels. For example there are two pictures of a stage coach accompanied with a full description: This coach was one of the first to carry the mail in Montana. Service then from Helena to Bozeman being over a week while now over the railroad it is four times a day. This coach was captured by the Indians in 1877 and recaptured after a hot pursuit by General Howard. P. S. Grandma Spear and dad then 9 years old took a trip in a similar coach from Helena to Great Falls a day trip 1885. Two pictures depict the Gordon Stockade. The Gordon Stockade now a National Historic Site was a temporary fort for 28 illegal gold miners in 1874. With a colourful history the fort which took 6 weeks to build was demolished in 2004 to make way for a reconstruction which took 6 years to complete. Her photographs show the aspects of the original fort along with a written explanation of its history. Another picture is of Dunraven Pass in Yellowstone National Park. Todays modern highway is shown as it was in 1930 a rutted dirt road. For a historian this is a superb pictorial record of life across America before WWII. It offers a wonderful look at a world now long gone. Of particular interest is the cover. This photo album was produced for the Yellowstone Park area and is imprinted with a colourful wildlife scene accompanied by a poem entitled Where The West Begins. This album measures 7 inches by 10.75 inches. It contains 50 pages and is 100% complete. The cover is a soft leather in 2 shades. The main part is a medium brown with a rich dark leather accent on the spine. The binding consists of 2 leather laces. The pages are black with extensive notations in white ink. The pages show some wear along the edges and the leather has a soft texture. The handwriting is legible. ; Photograph; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 50 pages . hardcover

EXCELLENT SPANISH GOLDEN-AGE MANUSCRIPT WHICH DOCUMENTS AN ATTEMPT TO "CERTIFY" THE NOBILITY OF A NOBLEMAN IN PROVINCIAL SPAIN WHOSE FAMILY WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FOUNDER OF SAN ANTONIO TEXAS.

The purpose of the document is to demonstrate the nobility of Don Manuel Silbestre Joseph de Herrera y Tassis. There had been a reorganizing of the government of the town Bañares in the province of Burgos now Logroño and Herrera believed that he should be the "acalde" similar to the post of "mayor" though with greater authority than the modern mayor. However to claim the position it was necessary for some unstated reason for Herrera to prove that he was of noble birth.

TEXT: The first leaves are copied from a "Book of Baptisms" the original is described as a large folio made of parchment from the Parish of San Andres in Madrid from June 5 1684 to May 23 1691 beginning at page 165. These leaves show that Manuel Herrera was born on the 31st of December 1686 making him 26 years old at the time of the events in question along with the names of his parents padrino etc.

The next leaves are copied from a book titled "Twenty Three Baptisms" from the Parish of San Fines and San Luis in Madrid begun in September 12 1629 ended January 18 1630 page 109 and document the birth and baptism of Henrrique Herrera Manuel's father. Next is evidence of the fact that Manuel's older half brother Don Gregorio de Herrera y Varacaldo was granted entrance into the Orden de Santiago The Order of Saint James a military/religious order. This is a copy of a document by Don Gregorio de Tapia the king's secretary and a member of the royal cabinet.

The next section lays out Manuel de Herrera's genealogy showing the claim to nobility through certain aspects of his family's history. His Grandfather Captain Don Matheo Andres de Herrera was granted membership in the Orden de Santiago by King Philip III. It is also shown that a number of Manuel's ancestors were born in Flanders obviously related to the Spanish occupation during the Eighty Years' War.

Following are certifications showing that Manuel's grandfather and other ancestors had held the position of Acalde de Mesta. This means that they were in charge of the Spanish livestock sheep herders' association. Although that does not sound particularly impressive it was a position of immense power and prestige monetarily and politically and was only held at this time by members of the higher nobility. The family held this position under the authority of the Duke of Béjar the first mention in this document would have been under the 9th Duke.

THE DUKES OF BÉJAR AND THE CONNECTION WITH SAN ANTONIO BEXAR COUNTY TEXAS: As we learn herein for several generations the Herrera family served under the Dukes of Béjar. Indeed Don Henrique de Herrera the father of Manuel Herrera for whom the present manuscript was written was the Governor of Sanabiza under the Duke of Béjar and a member of the Royal Council although the author claims that these records were "unavailable" as the city of Sanabiza had been taken over by the "enemy" Portuguese. The bespoke Manuel Herrera served as "Gentleman of the Chamber" under Juan Manuel López de Zúñiga y Castro later the 11th Duke of Béjar and the 10th Count of Bañares. Manuel López's uncle Baltazar de Zúñiga y Guzmánde 1658-1727 surely knew the family. He is of particular interest in the history of the Americas as he became Viceroy Governor and General Captain of New Spain President of the Royal Audience of Mexico High Majordomo of King Philip V and President of the Royal and Supreme Council of the Indies. In 1718 he established the Presidio San Antonio de Béjar; this was to become the city of San Antonio in Bexar County Texas.

OTHER NOBLE FAMILY MEMBERS: Several pages describe the nobility of Manuel's older brother Gregorio who belonged to the Orden de Santiago; was a well-known noble of the Royal Court; and had been elected Acalde de Mesta over several other candidates including the Secretary of New Spain and the King's own son. Manuel's grandfather was also in the Orden de Santiago and was a member of the king's cabinet; and finally his father enjoyed noble privilege in the castle of Sanabiza.

CONCLUSION: Manuel argues that he deserves to enjoy the same privileges in Bañares and he provices testimony from respected witnesses so that his "quality blood and nobility" can never again be challenged. The final section shows that the Bañares Deputation received the prepared documentation investigated its veracity confirmed the nobility of Don Manuel de Herrera y Tassis and granted him the position of Acalde de Bañares.

The final leaf contains the hastily written attestation of the secretary Joseph Marttines de Vallabanes including a description of the document itself: "38 folios hand-rubricated and on the last leaf of the sello tercero paper . separated !" -- presumably referring to the missing section at the top of the last leaf. NB: the text is continuous; perhaps a decorative flourish was excised in order to validate the text of the document with another copy.

SECRETARY: Written by Joseph Marttinez de Vallabanes regularly "MartÃnez"; this scribe has a habit of doubling the letters "t" and "r" a scribe in Valladolid and is "rubricado" meaning that each leaf on the recto lower interior margin has the scribe's "rúbrica"; an artistic signature that serves as a sort of notarized seal. The document was written at the order of Don Manuel Herrera y Tassis on the 10th of December 1727 as a copy of the original document written by the scribe Thomas de Silba and others in 1712.

PAPER: Initial stamps at the head show the seal of King Phillip V of Spain and show that this paper is the "tercero" grade of "papel sellado" costing 68 maravidÃs approximately $7.30 today and stating the year: 1727. Papel sellado was first authorized in Spain by a decree from Felipe IV in 1636. This stamped paper primarily functioned to gather revenue for the royal treasury; documents without the official stamp were regarded as non-legal and the transactions they documented subsequently negated. Papel sellado was extended to Spain's colonies in the New World following another law in 1638 where it was mainly sold to individuals who executed legal documents such as lawyers scribes and merchants. The necessary stamps were available in four sellos the use of each dependent upon the transaction and descending in cost: Primero Segundo Tercero and Quarto with two additional categories under Sello Quarto "de oficio" for government use and "pobres" for indigents. The more prominent seals thus signaled documents of greater importance and value. Papel sellado was distributed in annual issues in Spain.

WATERMARKS:
1.
