1952218751952. Archive of identified Japanese American wedding photographs documenting postwar Nikkei community life and the rebuilding of Japanese American social and commercial institutions in Northern California during the early 1950s. The material captures formal wedding celebrations and social relationships within Japanese American communities during the years following World War II incarceration and resettlement. The photographs provide visual evidence of the reestablishment of Japanese American-owned businesses including ethnic-specific photography studios that served as important cultural and social institutions after wartime internment disrupted community life throughout California and the West Coast. Particularly significant are the inscriptions and studio attributions which situate the images within networks of kinship friendship and Japanese American entrepreneurship during the postwar reconstruction era.
Collection consists of three silver gelatin wedding photographs dating circa early 1950s. Photo cards measure between approximately 12 x 11 inches and 9 x 14 inches with mounted photographs measuring approximately 9 x 7 inches. Two photographs depict the same Japanese American couple identified through inscriptions as "Mr. & Mrs. Ben Adachi and Ronnie." One image is a formal studio wedding portrait while another portrays a larger wedding party composed entirely of Japanese American participants and inscribed "Love Mits & Jayme - 12/6/52." Both photographs bear the imprint of Toyo Studio of Sacramento a Japanese American-operated photography business serving Northern California's Nikkei communities during the postwar period. The third photograph depicts another Japanese American couple identified as "George Ets Okasaki" posed alongside their wedding party before a curtain backdrop in a staged studio setting. The matte bears the handwritten inscription "To Ben and Rosie - Love George Ets" and is attributed to Kuroko Studio likely another Japanese American-operated studio in Northern California. Across all three images the couples and attendants are dressed in formal Western wedding attire including satin gowns floral bouquets veils tuxedos dark suits and boutonnières. The repeated dedications to Ben and Rose suggest close social or familial relationships linking the couples represented throughout the archive.

The photographs document a significant period in Japanese American history marked by postwar community rebuilding after the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. During the late 1940s and 1950s Japanese American owned businesses such as photography studios played an important role in restoring civic social and cultural life within resettled Nikkei communities throughout California. These images preserve not only wedding rituals and personal relationships but also evidence of cultural continuity economic recovery and public reaffirmation of Japanese American identity in the years following wartime displacement and exclusion. Particularly notable is the role of Toyo Studio and Kuroko Studio as community-centered institutions producing formal portraits that documented family milestones and social belonging during a period of rebuilding and reintegration. Minor handling wear and light surface wear consistent with age; photographs remain clean and well-preserved overall in very good condition. A cohesive and historically significant group of postwar Japanese American wedding portraits from Northern California's Nikkei community. unknown

1893List316Chicago 1893. Broadside 11 ¾ x 5 ½ inches. Very Good. John Hutchison patriarch and leader of the Hutchinson Family Band was hired by the World's Fair Committee to perform as one of the "Wonders of America." This broadsheet unrecorded is a souvenir of his performance from the fair in which he sang "Prophecy of Freedom" a ballad with suffragist overtones that he had written in 1867. The Hutchinson Family singers had enjoyed a long and successful career at the point of the 1893 exhibition beginning as one of the most successful acts of the 1840s.
Their support of abolition women's rights temperance and workers' rights had limited their following somewhat and following the Civil War their appearances in large cities were generally limited to churches temperance meetings and women's suffrage rallies. By 1893 John Hutchinson was at the tail end of his career - he would die fifteen years later - but was welcomed by attendants. William Lloyd Garrison would describe John Hutchinson's singing as "directly and purposely subservient to the freedom welfare happiness and moral elevation of the people."

The broadsheet introduces the song as " sung at his meetings held during the 'Woman's Congress Campaign' through Kansas. dedicated to the 'World's Fair Congresses' and sung by him during that period when prominence was given to the 'Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man' emphasizing the principle as a true method of restoring the unity of all good for the whole race of man." The Hutchinson Family Band embodied the ideals of the Second Great Awakening and this shows those ideals going strong at the dawn of the twentieth century. A well preserved example in very good condition with some light creases and normal tanning. Not recorded in OCLC. unknown books

18900011056Aurora Indiana. Fair with no dust jacket. 1890s. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting and genuinely adorable autograph book dating from the 1890s in Indiana United States. The diary was a gift to a young girl named Jennie Boldrey from Santa in 1892. From context we can determine that she lived in Indiana likely in or near the community of Aurora just west of Cincinnati Ohio. Although the book was given to her in 1892 it appears to have been used not by Jennie but by young Anna Annie Boldrey in the later 1890s. Our informal research has not been able to identify any additional biographical information on the two girls. The album's pages are full of loving messages and best wishes for Annie from family and friends. Some pages are adorned with stickers or pictures cut out and pasted to the page such as flowers or birds. Some examples of the handwritten messages Annie collected in her special album: My Dear Daughter Annie May your road be long and and the end be far out of sight face it bravely strong and mery. Trust in God and do the right. Your mother Abbie Boldrey Aurora Ind April 1st 1897. Dear Cousin Annie When far off in distant land/You see the writing of my hand/My face you cannot see/Remember it was May who wrote these lines for thee Your Cousin May Rollenberger June 15 1901. When the golden sun is setting and your mind from care is free/When of absent friends your thinking will you think of me Your Uncle John W. Boldrey Summan Ind Apr 25 1897. This autograph book while simple helps us to reflect on the timelessness of the child's passion for collecting children's need to feel loved and validated and the familial love that knows not the bounds of time. For a genealogist this is an excellent resource for tracing family relationships in Indiana at the end of the 19th century. This slim album measures 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches and contains 42 pages. It is 100% complete. The cover is in fair condition. It shows many wear marks and the exterior of the spine is torn in places. The binding has broken and many of the pages are loose. The pages are in fair condition with wear marks around each edge. The handwriting is legible. ; Autograph; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 42 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover
