1925317441Pittsburgh 1925. Date and negative number in negative. Mounted on loose linen album leaves. Date and negative number in negative. From a contemporary press account of the party in the Pittsburgh Index: "Tuesday night Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beatty Mellon Miss Sarah Cordelia Mellon and Mr. Richard King Mellon entertained more than six hundred guests at an out door dance at their home in Fifth Avenue. An enormous marquee constructed in the terraced flower gardens formed the setting for the dancing floor and the supper-room. The marquee ceiling was draped with sheer white fabric painted in an Oriental design with old gold and blue as the predominating color scheme. Below the ceiling was draped a gold border and the drop back of the recess in which the orchestra was placed represented a woodland scene. In the supper-room a specially constructed fountain played over rocks and forming a background were bay trees pandanus bamboo and palms. The whole idea was suggested to Mrs. Mellon by a garden in the Champs Elysses and the work was carried out under her direction" Provenance: estate of Richard Mellon Scaife unknown

Her diagnosis was announced to the public the following month. The family and doctors were initially optimistic and she stopped smoking at the insistence of her daughter having previously been a three-pack-a-day smoker. She continued her work with Doubleday but curtailed her schedule. The cancer proved to be aggressive and by April had spread. She made her last trip home from New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center on Wednesday May 18 1994. A large crowd of well-wishers and reporters gathered on the street outside her apartment. The following night at 10:15 p.m. Onassis died in her sleep. It was Thursday May 19 1994 two and a half months before her 65th birthday. Her son John F. Kennedy Jr. announced her death with the following: "My mother died surrounded by her friends and her family and her books and the people and the things that she loved. She did it in her own way and on her own terms and we all feel lucky for that." Onassis' funeral was held on May 23 1994 at Saint Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan - the church where she was baptized in 1929 and confirmed as a teenager. At her funeral her son John described three of her attributes as the love of words the bonds of home and family and the spirit of adventure. This little tract containing a brief citation of the religious views customs and regulations of the "United Society of Believers" usually known as "Shakers" has been written with the hope of answering collectively the questions most frequently asked by strangers who from various motives seek information concerning us. Having been especially designed to enclose with letters brevity became a necessity. If after careful perusal the reader should desire further information upon particular points pertaining to our history life or religion we have pamphlets and tracts that treat these different subjects separately and larger publications giving fuller information. We kindly request those who receive any of these writings to circulate them among friends. Among the topics addressed are: Origin and Early History of the Shakers Organization Social Arrangements and Employments Hygiene Recreation Literature and Correspondence Form of Worship Concerning the Bible. The tract states that the Shakers have a "Parental form of government." The tract also states that "All correspondence will be subject to the examination and advice of the Elders." The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing more commonly known as the Shakers are a millenarian nontrinitarian restorationist Christian sect founded circa 1747 in England and then organized in the United States in the 1780s. They were initially known as "Shaking Quakers" because of their ecstatic behavior during worship services. Espousing egalitarian ideals women took on spiritual leadership roles alongside men including founding leaders such as Jane Wardley Mother Ann Lee and Mother Lucy Wright. The Shakers emigrated from England and settled in Revolutionary colonial America with an initial settlement at Watervliet New York present-day Colonie in 1774. They practice a celibate and communal utopian lifestyle pacifism uniform charismatic worship and their model of equality of the sexes which they institutionalized in their society in the 1780s. They are also known for their simple living architecture technological innovation music and furniture. During the mid-19th century an Era of Manifestations resulted in a period of dances gift drawings and gift songs inspired by spiritual revelations. At its peak in the mid-19th century there were 2000-4000 Shaker believers living in 18 major communities and numerous smaller often short-lived communities. External and internal societal changes in the mid- and late-19th century resulted in the thinning of the Shaker community as members left or died with few converts to the faith to replace them. By 1920 there were only 12 Shaker communities remaining in the United States. As of 2019 there is only one active Shaker village: Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine. Consequently many of the other Shaker settlements are now museums. As pacifists the Shakers did not believe that it was acceptable to kill or harm others even in time of war. As a result the Civil War brought with it a strange time for the Shaker communities in America. Both Union and Confederate soldiers found their way to the Shaker communities. Shakers tended to sympathize with the Union but they did feed and care for both Union and Confederate soldiers. President Lincoln exempted Shaker males from military service and they became some of the first conscientious objectors in American history. North Family paperback
1840470Cleveland 1840. Very good. 8pp. on three folded sheets. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor wear and soiling. In a highly legible hand. Small archive of letters written by James and Mary Smith English farmers emigrated to Ohio by way of Lowell Massachusetts. The pair settled on a farm eight miles from Cleveland during a boom period -- in 1820 only 606 people lived in Cleveland and only around 1000 in 1830. The completion of the Ohio and Erie Canals however increased the population to nearly 6000 by the time the last of these letters was written in 1840. The Smiths had seven children at least one of whom John C. Smith 1814-1881 remained in Lowell working as a calico printer at the Merrimack Print Works. As a family of farmers the Smiths' correspondence focuses primarily on their land and the value of their harvest. In the winter of 1837 James and Mary tell their son. "We have completed our stable. It will hold ten head of cattle. We have 3 acres of wheat in which we intend to raise much produce as we can for Cleveland is a very good market. Our last butter we got 21 cents per pound flour is 7 dollars and 50 cents per barrel." By 1840 the Smiths' land is thriving: "Our crop of wheat is 66 bushels. The last years was the best year for wheat since we came here. we sold butter 424 pounds it made us over 70 dollars from 4 cows. The last fall we cleared six acres and put wheat in it. It is the most we have put in since we came. The last harvest we had 18 acres to mow 5 acres of wheat to reap 2 acres oats to reap and six acres of wheat to put in. We hired a man one week to help us. We did all rest ourselves. We have under cultivation 40 acres. Land is low because cash is so very scarce." Cash may have been scarce because of the region or due to the Panic of 1837 which hit the Smiths and their dairy in the next couple of years. A nice snapshot of the life of emigrant farmers in the Midwest during the 1830s. unknown books
