A copy of Tennyson's Poems presented to Mrs Gibson by Charles Tennyson published by the OUP in 1908 front inner joint split and weak but holding and 5. A souvenir tissue for the marriage of Alfred Tennyson and Cicely Drummond approximately 365mm x 360mm in size creased with a few small nicks and tears creased obscuring a couple of letters. The marriage took place at Westminster Abbey in December 1912 printed by S. Burgess who specialised in these commemorative tissues. 24201With facsimile of postmark dated 6 September 1816. No place but from Ireland. The present item gives the text of the poem described by Byron as 'the most perfect ode in the English language' before its first publication in the Newry Telegraph in April 1817. See Wolfe’s entry in the Oxford DNB. The source of the present item is unclear. It is a photographic facsimile many decades old on both sides of a 4to leaf. In fair condition slightly creased on browned paper with negligible loss to margin at head. With five creases from folding. Addressed to ‘John Taylor Esqe / at the Revd Mr. Armstrong’s / Clonoully / Cashel’. A good photographic facsimile of an autograph letter with nothing in Wolfe’s actual hand. The photograph indicates some damage to the original letter from the opening of the seal resulting in loss of a few words. The letter begins without salutation: ‘I have completed the Burial of Sir John Moore & will here inflict it upon you; you have no one but yourself to blame for praising the two stanzas that I told you so much -’. Wolfe now gives a fair copy of his celebrated poem numbering the eight stanzas. Apart from accidentals the only variations from the version published a few months later are ‘lanthorn’ for ‘lantern’ and ‘struck the note’ for ‘struck the hour’. The first seven stanzas fill up the first side of the letter after the opening paragraph with the eighth on the reverse which carries the address and postmark and the following: ‘Pray write soon - you may direct as usaly to Colley & it will follow me to the Country. Give my love to Armstrong & Believe me / My Dear John / Ever Yours / Charles Wolfe / I again say Remember Constantine Elizabeth is to be drawn among them - You will pardon me for being particular about any message from that quarter.’ With facsimile of postmark dated 6 September 1816. The document reads: 'Le Sossignez en reconais avoir recu du Citoyen Penkoucke la Some de deux mile franc a Compte dune Copie que je lui fais dune joueuse dosselets Pequignot Sculpteur'. He is referring apparently to an engraving of his sculpture "La Joueuse d'Osselets" "jacks" or some form or other. The recipient was a member of the notable firm of French printers and publishers probably Charles-Joseph Panckoucke 1736-1798. 'a paris le 23 brumaire lan qatrieme [sic] de la republique'. Eighteen pages of pedigrees printed lengthwise comprising: a twelve-page 'Pedigree of Biscoe of Little Missenden' followed by two pedigrees A and B over three pages and 'Appendix I. To shew the connection of the Randall and Biscoe families' and 'Appendix II. to shew the connection between the Blake and Biscoe families'. The printed pedigree also contains a two-page introduction by 'J. C. C. S.' has headings 'Arms' 'Other Biscoes' 'New England' and 'Index' with acknowledgements; a three-page 'Index of Names'; and a two-page 'Index of Places'. Four copies on COPAC but now scarce. Also included is a manuscript pedigree 1p. landscape folio in fair condition folded into a packet docketed: Jan 6 1867 Biscoe Pedigree Revd. R. Biscoe Rector of Whitbourne Co Hereford from inspection of the probate of the will of Joseph Biscoe dated 1749 codicil 1750'. Also manuscript transcription 1p. 12mo creased and worn headed 'Copy inscription on ye s. wall of ye church of <>' relating to the family of Joseph Biscoe 1672-1750.
