During the decades following the Second World War the expansion of the United States diplomatic corps and international cultural exchange programs created new opportunities for African Americans to participate in global professional and social networks. At a time when segregation and racial inequality still structured much of American life a growing number of Black diplomats military officers educators and government officials traveled abroad as representatives of the United States. These individuals and their families became part of an emerging phenomenon often described as Black internationalism in which African Americans experienced and documented life beyond the racial boundaries of the United States while participating in transnational diplomatic and cultural communities.<br /> <br /> Extensive vernacular photograph archive of approximately 250 original photographs the majority in color documenting the international travel and family life of an African American family likely connected to the U.S. diplomatic corps. Photographs measure approximately 3.5 x 4.5 inches with several bearing date stamps ranging from 1960 to 1973. The photographs provide a remarkable visual chronicle of mid-twentieth-century African American upward mobility and global mobility. The family is recorded across Europe North Africa Latin America and the United States appearing in both posed portraits and candid scenes documenting leisure travel sightseeing and everyday family life abroad. Numerous images show visits to archaeological sites Mediterranean and European cityscapes beaches resorts and historic landmarks while others capture cruises desert excursions and urban sightseeing. Several photographs depict the family posed near or in front of United States embassy buildings and diplomatic signage strongly suggesting a professional connection to American diplomatic or consular service. Other images record travel experiences including camel rides in Egypt visits to Greco-Roman ruins bullfighting arenas and beach resorts in Mexico urban scenes in Paris and other European cities and domestic travel within Hawaii and California. Oblong album ca. 23 x 30 cm. With 36 albumen prints including 14 photographs of Australia. These include houses churches buildings in Springsure Queensland around 1870 photos of Charles with his horse a wonderful picture of an "Alligator killed in the Mackay River" and "bottle trees near Taroon" 5 photographs of India: Bengal Camp Delhi multiple group photos in Darjeeling a group photo in front of the government house in Calcutta and the crew of the H.M.S. Narcissus 17 photographs of Gibraltar America Switserland art pieces and the Dicken family. Further with 24 watercolour paintings of flowers landscapes and people including two of the Taj Mahal and 17 coloured pencil and ink drawings of people. The drawings and paintings are almost all signed S. P. D. or F. E. D. who were likely members of the Dicken family. Most photographs and art pieces are captioned in pencil or brown ink several leaves are decorated with additional drawings or dried plants. Album amicorum of a settler in Australia and his family with rare photographs of Queensland Australia and India in the 1870s.The photographs in the album are extraordinary especially those of the small town of Springsure. In 1841 the first photograph was taken in Australia of Bridge Street in Sydney. While explorers and early colonists quickly became a subject of interest for Australian photographers photographs of early settlements are quite rare. The photographs of the government house in Calcutta and the crew of the H.M.S. Narcissus in the album are also of historical interest. Together with the numerous drawings paintings and poems the album offers a fascinating insight into life in Queensland in the late 19th century.Charles Shortt Dicken 1841-1902 was born in India. He was a lieutenant for the Royal Irish Fusiliers before he settled in Queensland in 1864. He entered the mounted police in 1866 and worked as a police magistrate until he was appointed secretary in the office of the Agent-General for Queensland in London in 1880. When he retired from this position in 1891 he received the title C.M.G Companion in the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. This is awarded to those who render extraordinary or important non-military service to the United Kingdom in a foreign or Commonwealth country. In the final years of his life he contributed to The British Empire series a series of four volumes which aimed to offer trusthworthy information about the colonies and settlement of the British Empire. Dicken was a co-author of volume IV - Australasia published in 1900.The cloth is worn at the head of the spine and shows a few small holes on the boards revealing the leather album beneath. The illustration of the "execution of Mary Queen of Scots" is missing on leaf 12. Some of the dried plants are falling off. The edges and corners of the leaves show some signs of wear the leaves slightly browned. Overall in good condition the photographs artworks and other decorations are very well preserved.l Mennel P. CONDITION: Very good most images with strong tonality others with some fading. <p>An engaging album of photos and postcards documenting the activities of a community of Swiss immigrant miners in Prescott Arizona.</p> <br /> <br /> <p>In 1912 the newly established state of Arizona supported some 445 active mines seventy-two concentrating facilities and eleven smelters. This album documents the activities of a group of Swiss immigrants in Arizona during the first two decades of the twentieth century centering on the Kaelin family and their claims in the Blue Bell Mine located near Mayer Arizona in Yavapai County. One image shows a group of couples identified as “the clan from Switzerland.†Swiss miners are known to have prospected the Swastika Mine Claim and the Prescott area. Two images capture a Swiss Immigrant Orchestra: a group of six individuals playing music together outside a building and another group of six miners shown in 1917 posing with their instruments. One of these images is captioned “Swiss Immigrant orchestra ca. 1906 Yavapai Co. Negative Printed in Switzerland. Mayer Arizona. Territory. Paula Schrader Plays the Fiddle 2nd from right.â€</p> <br /> <br /> <p>Included here are scenes of miners at work and posed with businessmen; mountain and valley views; a man and a woman panning for gold; a group of women hunting their guns drawn; two women cooking outdoors on a makeshift stove; three cowgirls posing beside a horse smoking cigars and wearing guns; a milk-delivery man next to a Kaelin & Co. coach; the Santa Fe Prescott & Phoenix Depot in Prescott; a photomontage of Prescott residences; elevated views of Prescott and underground mining scenes. Other subjects and Arizona locations pictured include the Swastika Claim Gurley St. in Prescott Stamp Mill-Tiger Cold Co. in Kingman Roosevelt Dam in Globe Granite Creek and Fort Whipple. The Kaelin family is believed to have later settled in San Diego in the 1920s. MacNaughton; containing approx. 30 pages with original drawings by three competent amateur artists mainly in pen and ink but some in watercolour or pencil which accompany numerous popular children's verses and rhymes all handwritten in ink plus a number of original humorous illustrations with captions; all of the works are signed by the artists most with the initials M. M. but some with A. M. or R. M.; the authors whose work is illustrated include Eugene Field 1850-1895 Jane Taylor 1783-1824 and Ann Taylor 1782-1866 Randolph Caldecott 1846-1886 Edward Lear 1812-1888 William Allingham 1824-1889 Charles Perrault 1628-1703 and Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1772-1834; last 30 pp. blank; very clean throughout. The subject matter of the satirical illustrations in this charming little album - and the use of the Scots vernacular in their captions - makes it fairly evident that the MacNaughtons were a Scottish family. As far as we can ascertain all of the highly accomplished pen and ink sketches which illustrate the popular verse in the album are also entirely original in the sense that they have not been merely copied from publications. hardcover
