The pages are tanned with some light scattered soil spots and some small scattered foxing spots. Someone wrote the page numbers in red ink next to the sermon titles on the contents pages. The hinges are beginning to crack. There is a name stamped on one of the front end papers and a name and date 1865 written on the top of the title page. There is a small light water mark in the top margin of the back end papers. The cover has some light soiling and light corner tip wear. Dark ox blood coloured full leather boards raised bands with embossed decorated compartments and title in gilt to the spine. Simple blind stamped foliage decoration to the front and rear boards. Corners rubbed more so to the top two corners o/w tight and clean. Gilt decorated inner dentelles. All edges gilt - showing some wear/rubbing. Internally the front endpapers are marked stained and have a former owner's name in the ffep. The second free endpaper has been glued to the first free endpaper for some reason in the past. The title page and the rest of the text block is clean and tight complete with the Gunpowder Treason section removed mid-century. Includes an Integral ribbon bookmark a bit 'rolled'. According to his entry in the Oxford DNB Brandram - founder with Frank Talfourd of the Oxford Dramatic Society - 'was remembered as the most distinguished Shakespearian reciter of the period influencing the productions of William Poel and through his popular recitations familiarized middle-class families with Shakespeare'. 2pp. 12mo. In fair condition with unobtrusive repair of closed tear with archival tape. He is 'dreadfully sorry to disappoint' him again but he is 'not up to the mark': 'I still have and I suppose always shall have to be kept in order by frequent visits to my doctor and on Friday I underwent a little operation - nothing to compare of course to what I have been through but enough to knock one up and make one feel very uncomfortable for a day or two.' He hoped to be better on the day of writing but is not fit to go out and his wife will leave the present letter for Munday but 'she will not go in without me'. Richmond. 5 August 1888. unknown
